Re: Portal time 25-26
Man, I've BEEN saying this. NIL hasn't drastically changed the financial landscape of college sports like folks want to believe. It's just moved the money from going to programs to going directly to players. The haves still have and the have-nots still haven't. There are a few programs that are experiencing new success because deep-pocketed donors are giving tons to NIL (Texas Tech is prime example), but most everything has really stayed the same.t4pizza wrote: ↑Tue Dec 16, 2025 10:03 pmNow those are figures that make much more sense than the nonsense NIL boogey man figures that have been posted on many threads here. Sure doesn't look like they are paying their OLmen 190k a year. Nor does it seem like their NIL is so much greater than ours that we just can't compete. Sadly, they have just done it better. We say we do more with less, but clearly they do it much better with less than we do. This is an administration issue, we have to get better at that level.AppState222 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 16, 2025 5:37 pmSome interesting JMU NIL numbers, reported in the athletic, based of FOIA requests,
"James Madison’s revenue-sharing budget is a little more than $1 million, according to its payroll data. That figure is split among 34 players (whose names were redacted). Two players are making $65,000, and four are making $7,500 each. Four men’s basketball players were set to make more than the highest-paid football player.
…
Here’s a stunning way to contextualize it: What JMU paid its head coach and entire roster (just under $1.9 million) is less than Oregon paid its defensive coordinator, Tosh Lupoi ($2 million). Ducks head coach Dan Lanning’s $10.4 million salary is three times the Dukes’ annual football operating expenses ($3.2 million).
James Madison’s budget is competitive in the Sun Belt, but it’s not No. 1. That was Coastal Carolina ($17.3 million in football revenue)."
While I'm on this topic, I think the transfer portal is similar. It has allowed players freedom of movement, but on average there really hasn't been that much change in the number of players changing schools. The difference is, before the portal a lot of guys would just drop out or scrub off the team. Now, they "enter the portal."
Also, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but players are allowed to come back out of the portal and stay on the team, right? I wouldn't be surprised to see some of these guys posting AI-generated Instagram posts about "After much prayer, thought, and discussion with my family and coaches, I've decided I will be returning to Appalachian State for the 26-27 season."

My understanding is that they are allowed to come back to the school they tried to ditch, but it's at the discretion of the school to allow or not allow them back on the team.MrCraig wrote: ↑Wed Dec 17, 2025 9:11 amMan, I've BEEN saying this.
