Re: Avoid Like the Plague
As I recall Pat Kelsey has been in the mix a time or two, have no idea if he wants to make another run. You might want to look at successful D2 coaches or...hmmm womens team coaches like Mark Campbell.

In Basketball? Perhaps some SBC schools but none that would apply to App.Gonzo wrote: ↑Thu Jan 17, 2019 4:02 pmMore money and exposure.Seattleapp wrote: ↑Thu Jan 17, 2019 3:58 pmI don’t see why any so con coach would take a sunbelt job.

Re: Avoid Like the Plague
Yes in basketball and yes it also applies to App. Athletic budgets in the SBC, including ours, are much bigger than the SoCon. Facilities, you name it. It's a step up. Similar to SBC to AAC.

I would say when it comes to basketball that the SoCon is getting a better deal for its money.

Re: Avoid Like the Plague
We don't have the ability to hire away another D1 school's coach nor should we try. The only D1 coach that would want to come here would have just been fired.
Somewhere there is an assistant coach or a lower division coach that will bring us out of this hole.

Re: Avoid Like the Plague
It should read we have more money than over half the SoCon and the only SoCon school with a considerably higher basketball budget than us is Furman. No listing here for SoCon newbie Mercer but I assume our budget is higher than theirs.fjblair wrote: ↑Thu Jan 17, 2019 5:58 pmThere goes the "we have more money" than the SoCon argument.hapapp wrote: ↑Thu Jan 17, 2019 4:43 pmThese are 2016 figures in terms of bball budgets:

Again, just like with Matt McMahon. No coach on any squad that has made the NCAA's would drop down to a rebuild project like us.appaneer1984 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 17, 2019 2:28 pmI wouldn't mind Wes Miller from UNC-G...in his last 3 seasons his teams have performed quite well.

Combine the financial figures with:
- lack of fan support
- lack of historical success
- inability to schedule well
... and try to think of why any coach who’s doing well at his current job would leave that for here instead of either staying where he is or holding out for a legitimate step up.

Yeah, Miller will likely be moving on to a bigger job soon. Nothing but downside for someone like him to come here.AppKing21 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 17, 2019 6:26 pmAgain, just like with Matt McMahon. Re: Avoid Like the Plague
Kelsey would be a catch if he's interested in a stronger conference, bigger challenge and more money--although he turned down UMASS at the last possible second. I believe our last
ten-year history with the sport of men's basketball has to be sending the Chancellor and AD a message...fix it this time! I hasten to say that neither of the aforementioned university leaders created the mess we're in. They just get to deal with it.
Kelsey is from the Skip Prosser tree--having played and coached for Prosser at Xavier and having moved with Prosser to Wake Forest. Good basketball lives in his body and mind.
.630 winning percentage in his first six years as a head coach...all at Winthrop. Current team is 11-6.
Salary in 2017-18: $227,150 + usual and customary incentives--virtually the same as Jim Fox.

Re: Avoid Like the Plague
A fast-talking AD with a glib tongue could talk a coach into coming to Boone. The right AD could sell ice water to Eskimos. Do we have that kind of AD?EastHallApp wrote: ↑Thu Jan 17, 2019 6:31 pmCombine the financial figures with:

Re: Avoid Like the Plague
I know that in years past he would have come to App to coach. He has a good record with lots of experience. I feel He would be worth a look if he is still interested. In my opinion

One guy we probably could get would be Duggar Baucom. We might or might not win as much as we want, but at least we’d be entertaining.
