The problem with Lutz was that we went after him four years too late. In 2014, he was making more as an assistant at State (considerably more, I might add) than he would have made as the head coach in Boone. The time to have gone after Lutz was four years earlier when he had just been shown the door at Charlotte and was unemployed. He would have crawled to Boone for the job then.

Fake news. He turned C.Cobb's firm job offers down flatly--several times. Refused on-campus visits.

Not sure what happened the last time but sure doesn’t hurt to ask given his NC connections and time spent in Iowa, NC State, and with the Bulls

Dave Smart - coach of the Canadian powerhouse Carleton University would be a home-run hire. He’s won something like 9 national championships with a 92% winning percentage against Canadian competition. Just thinking outside the box.

Should have been McMahon all along....if not in 2009 or 2010, definitely in 2014. Of course, he might have turned the job down in 14, when Fox was hired. Oh well

After perusing ncaa stats, 2 coaches I would consider are Kelsey at Winthrop (already mentioned) and Dustin Kerns at Presbyterian. The Blue Hose are top 20-30 range on most of the stat pages and already have 13 wins in Kerns’ second year on the job. He was on Mike Young’s staff at wofford for 7 years, is a Clemson alum and is from Kingsport, TN. He was also on Buzz’s staff at UT briefly. I mention this because I felt that a Big South coach might consider App a step up (at least in pay and exposure), although these guys, as well as the radford coach, might be in line for an even better job with continued success.

It’s also worth noting that Ritchie McKay’s Liberty squad is ranked in quite a few categories (apparently a guy who was interested in App in 2014).
The only sun belt teams consistently listed are Texas St, Ga Southern, and occasionally UL and Ga state.

2. Kelly Wells-Pikeville-NAIA
287-102 record at Pikeville. Won 2011 NAIA National Championship. 11 20 win seasons out of 12. Two 30 win seasons. 7 National NAIA tournaments. Coached two years at Hawaii Pacific (one as assistant, the second as head coach) before arriving at Pikeville. Played at Morehead State. Spent 11 seasons coaching in high school ranks winning the KY state championship at Mason County HS in 2003 and finishing runner-up with Mason County in 2004. Overall record at Mason County 171-56 (.753).

Keith "Mister" Jennings, head coach of the Lees-McRae women, would be another candidate I would consider. During his playing days at ETSU, the guy damn sure knew how to win in Boone.

Didn’t UNCW use a similar approach with Kevin Keatts? They brought a coach from a lower division with a track record of winning. That seemed to work for them pretty well.

Keatts was an assistant at Louisville prior to UNCW. No other college Head Coach experience.

Again, Dave Smart of Carleton U (Canadian University League) has an all-time record of 557-47. He was on record in 2017 saying he received 3 NCAA head coaching offers, accepted one of them (then later backed out). 2016 salary was $159k making him the highest paid head coach in Canadian U-Sports. 53 years old as well.

Maybe Texas will fire Shaka Smart and we could grab him on the rebound. Although I expect he'd have better options, even coming off a firing.

Duggar brought his VMI team to Presbyterian College some years ago leading the nation in scoring and they had 15 at the half. I never could figure how that team could score unless they played Convent 7-8 times.
