Understand your point but working for your mentor with the head coach at the start of his multi-year contract is much different than the situation that awaits Ledford under Doeren at State (assuming he's a lame duck coach for reasons already stated in this topic thread). I think Ledford moves on at some point but don't necessarily agree that State is the wise choice currently. If Ledford was coming in with a new HC starting a new multi-year contract (like Morris at SMU for example w/ Stepp) then I would say it makes sense, especially at a P5 school that will obviously be able to pay more than App.EastHallApp wrote:Sure, but SMU is a down-in-the-dumps G5 (albeit one with lots of cash) that's halfway across the country, while State is a middle-of-the-road P5 in Ledford's home state.ASUGoose wrote:Yes, but Stepp is not an apples to apples comparison with him leaving for SMU. Stepp was hired and mentored by Chad Morris while at Clemson. I'm not aware of the connection if any between Doeren and Ledford in the past.EastHallApp wrote:Good point. I imagine the plan would be to try to have a couple 9 or 10 win seasons and parlay that into a move to a better job.APPdiesel wrote:I was focusing more on upward mobility within that division. NC State has little to no chance to knock off both Clemson and FSU as the power in that division. Is 3rd best in your division really attractive?EastHallApp wrote:Significant pay raise I'm sure, plus chance to move to P5. Atlantic isn't really the tougher division either - it was sub.-500 vs. the Coastal this year. People focus on Clemson/FSU, but it also includes Syracuse/BC/Wake.
Of course, one could also say he might do better to spend another year or two at App and perhaps get a chance to go directly to that better P5 job if we keep winning. But, I understand that a mid-level P5 offer is going to be tough to pass up for our coaches. I mean we had a guy leave last year for SMU...

Goose - not saying it's the wisest choice, just that it wouldn't be a particularly hard one to understand if we're honest with ourselves.
At this point I'll also mention that so far the only indication I've seen that this is happening is that one poster on a free NCSU board says "all signs point to" Ledford taking the job, then a bunch of other posters reacting to it. No idea if that poster is an "insider" or what those signs are, as he hasn't elaborated on that.
Not saying it's not true, but that's a big leap from anything conclusive.

Re: NC State Looking at Ledford?
Based on this logic it really depends on if Ledford wants to take a chance that may only work out for a season, or is he willing to wait another year or so at App prior to moving on to a less risky situation.EastHallApp wrote:Goose - not saying it's the wisest choice, just that it wouldn't be a particularly hard one to understand if we're honest with ourselves.

Or if I were Satt I'd say stick with me, if we can pull this off for another 2 or 3 years, I'm taking you with me. I know we don't want to think about that but it's a very real possibility.

Re: NC State Looking at Ledford?
If Satt does leave I would say that Ledford is clearly the top internal candidate for the position, too. I just can't see how this move is beneficial for him in the long run. If he left for an entrenched coach at Duke or to join the new staff at Virginia Tech I'd understand, but he would likely be out of a job by this time next year if he goes to NC State.

Re: NC State Looking at Ledford?
Just a thought. I am from Marion, like Ledford, and I was told by another local who knows the Ledford family that his wife is pregnant. She is also from Marion but her Mother lives in Raleigh. I know from having 2 kids that being very close to family when you have young children is very helpful. I am not saying that this would have an impact on his decision but it could. His family lives here but Boone is a little over 1 hour away where as Raleigh and her Mom are right there.

Looks as if Football Scoop is now reporting it:
North Carolina State: Per source, Appalachian State offensive line coach / co-offensive coordinator Dwayne Ledford will be the new offensive line coach at NC State.

I just hope we don't take him back in any capacity when Dave Doeren gets fired this offseason. It's a short-sighted move and I hope he says the price for it.

I guess being in your 20s you haven't had as many opportunities to make mistakes or do dumb things like we guys/gals in our 60s

Re: NC State Looking at Ledford?
Don’t know if money, P5 Status, or the particular circumstances at NCSU led to this move, but the money had to be hard to ignore. Based on the 2014-2015 salaries listed in the UNC System salary database, this would have been a 280% salary increase (93,250 vs 263,500) Now that is old info and I am sure that App increased Ledford’s salary since then, but likely not enough to bridge such a significant gap. I would also guess that there were salary negotiations when he led the AD know he was contemplating the move. Still, as others have said, it is not easy to walk away from that kind of salary increase.

Re: NC State Looking at Ledford?
Like I said earlier, it's about the money. If he is out in a year he will just get another job. Not a hard thing for a good line coach to do.

Re: NC State Looking at Ledford?
Good move for Ledford and also for us. We will be fine. Satt has always made good hires when replacing others (Stepp and Foster). Plus we can find someone better who will be more open minded in recruiting.
For Ledford I wish him well but it is a very risky move considering Doeren is on the doorstep of getting canned next year. No hard feelings at all!

I'm sure you'll find a job and stay there forever and will never consider a job that provides you and your family with a significant pay raise. My guess is that he left on good terms with the staff and there are no hard feelings.
