Did very well last year as they won the A-10 regular season and got an at-large NCAA bid. TBD this year - they're 11-6 (3-3), good for a 53 RPI but only 126 in kenpom.huskie3 wrote:How is Davidson doing without their top assistant?

Looking at the conference standings I noticed the Apps have lost to Hofstra (tied for first in the CAA), SFA (tied for first in the Southland), Hampton (first in the MEAC), and UNC (first in the ACC), as well Little Rock (first in the SBC). No shame in that.

Capel was the color analyst for the UNC-VT game today. He does a pretty nice job with the analysis. Maybe that's his true calling.Appsolutely wrote:The same guy who hired Jason Capel.Madapp wrote:Who hired Fox ?

Cobb was dead set to mortgage all of Watauga County to beg and buy Cheap Suits Bobby Lutz to move into HCC. Like with Buzz II, Cobb wasn't going to take no for an answer. He was ready to give up anything to get a "yes" answer. McKillop practically did all of the work for Cobb on Fox. By all of the info that leaked out, Cobb's actions were really embarrassing behind the scenes. He knows just about zero about athletics HR--he's a totally tunnel vision guy.firemoose wrote:Bob McKillopMadapp wrote:Who hired Fox ?

Thank you for the reminder of how all of that went down, I had forgot how much CC was in the tank for Lutz. Thank goodness we didn't end up with him.asu66 wrote:Cobb was dead set to mortgage all of Watauga County to beg and buy Cheap Suits Bobby Lutz to move into HCC. I remember he was considered a leading candidate for a while but don't think I ever heard the behind-the-scenes story. If 66 or anyone wants to PM me, I'd be curious to hear the details.

Not that much to tell, really. After formally relieving Capel of his duties on March 7, Cobb announced that he was looking for candidates with head coaching experience and a working knowledge of the Sun Belt. The object of his search was NCSU's Bobby Lutz. He wasted nearly three weeks trying to twist Lutz's arm. No interest--no deal. He threw away several more days on Wofford's Mike Young. No way. Jose'. He reluctantly granted Fox a courtesy interview at the insistence of Bob McKillop. Fox impressed enough to be granted a second meeting--but received no offer. Word was that there were other interviews but offers, if any, were never made public. Cobb and Rick Beasley flew to Texas for the NABC and the Final Four with the recruiting clock ticking and no head coach under contract. McKillop apparently "actively engaged" Cobb on more than one occasion during that trip. As of April 4, 2014 we still had no coach.
In fact, Cobb couldn't find an experienced and successful head coach whose salary and budget expectations he could meet without getting the football staff riled up. He found himself headed into the first week of April with nothing positive to report about his basketball search. He stalled and stalled waiting for a miracle call from Lutz. That call never came. He actually made the right decision, but he didn't do it willingly. He had to be badgered into it. n
It was exactly one month after the end of the Apps' season that a presser was announced. It actually occurred two days following the NCAA championship game. Fox was introduced and made a favorable first impression. His proud parents were on hand for the occasion.

There's also a tale about how Cobb ran into Mrs McKillop and she lobbied hard for him to hire Jim.

I know Bob and Coach Fox is a fine hire. Does anyone think that this opens the door for Bob's son Matt who is an assistant coach to succeed Bob?

Yeah, I've heard that one, too.T-Dog wrote:There's also a tale about how Cobb ran into Mrs McKillop and she lobbied hard for him to hire Jim.
There's also an oft told tale about McKillop overhearing a loud discussion between Cobb and a close associate on the plane trip from Tx back to Charlotte; and him (McKillop) jumping in to give Cobb a good lecture/lesson about the "how to" of hiring basketball coaches and a lot more. That one apparently had a lot of witnesses.

I think that might have been a decent option had DC remained in the SoCon. The A-10 is an entirely different animal. There, all of the HCs have at least one other successful D-I HC position on their résumés.Rekdiver wrote:I know Bob and Coach Fox is a fine hire. Bob signed a multi-year contract ext. last summer; probably his last (he's 65). Matt needs to go get some HC experience in a hurry if he wants the job when Pop steps down. Just my take. Dr. Quillen probably won't consult w/me when the time comes.

Depends on whether Fox succeeds at App and is still here when McKillop retires. If Fox has turned us around by then and hasn't taken a bigger job, I'd think he'd be very high on their wish list at that time.Rekdiver wrote:I know Bob and Coach Fox is a fine hire. Of course, might also depend on how much influence McKillop has on the process. Those situations can get pretty sticky.
