Wrestling vs Mizzou

Unread post by McLeansvilleAppFan » Sat Feb 13, 2016 7:48 am

Apps drop the match 41-6. Pretty much a sweep except for

"The lone bright spot on the night for the Mountaineers came in the heavyweight match when No. 5 Denzel Dejournette squared off with James Romero. Dejournette wasted little time taking down Romero in the first period. Two minutes in the bout, Dejournette pinned his opponent for the second time in as many days, giving the Mountaineers their only six points of the night."

Record attendance according to the announcer, and first time two ranked teams in wrestling had met in Boone.

Denzel Dejournette is good! He is #5 in the country for a reason.

Dropped a couple of close matches early on but in the middle of the match MO took control with a string of pins.

"first time two ranked teams in wrestling had met in Boone."

I'm not exactly a wrestling encyclopedia, but that's hard to fathom given the legendary teams/coaches Appalachian has boasted of over 60 + decades.

biggest match of the year, finally have a large crowd to support the team against a nationally ranked P5 program, and we have our worst performance of the year, shame.

Couple take aways, and you know the history more than I do.

1. Just repeating what the announcer over the video feed stated. He could be wrong and/or I could have heard him wrong.

2. Of those 60+ years only about the last 46 were with us in NCAA DI though that is still a long time.

3. Years ago there were a lot more wrestling schools so cracking the top 20 (when did everyone go to top 25 anyway in polls?) or now top 25, may have kept up out of the rankings though as a percentage of schools we were ahead of for any given year may have been a higher percentage then than is the case now.

4. Regardless of all of that I (and you I am sure) are proud of the wrestling history at App and what is to come.

Go Apps!

I think that was a factor of the opposition being #4 in the country and less a poor performance on our part.

not into moral victories, if were supposedly a top 25 program, playing at home, 43-6 is a route, and a bad performance no matter who your playing. We don't expect to win against the 4th best team in the country, but to lose every match except the last one, I'm sure the HC isn't happy with their performance, and he shouldn't be.

His comments were actually reflective of what happened. He pointed out that we lost some close matches early on and then Missouri controlled things until the heavyweight match. My guess is there is a big difference between a top 5 program and one in the 20s.

BTW, he claimed no moral victory.

I think we won when we had the higher ranked player and lost when we did not have the higher rank. For a team to have a #4 or #5 ranking I would imagine most all of their team is top 10 or top 20. We have some ranked players but I don't remember any being top 10 except Dejournette. The SoCon has a listing of all the SoCon wrestlers on their webpage the other day. I skimmed over it. Also the NCAA has top 33 rankings as well on their website. Skimmed that as well the other day.

8 of the 10 Mizzou wrestlers were ranked in the Top 15 Nationally in their weight class. I was there and you could see the different class of wrestler that Mizzou had. Very technically-sound, very strong and picked their spots.

Also, they have over 30 wrestlers on their roster. 3-deep in each weight-class.

The result was disappointing but not unexpected.

There are less than 100 wrestling programs remaining in Div. 1 (about a dozen that are DII or DIII in all other sports). Sad really, but expect more sports to look like wrestling 20 years from now.

There is a huge difference in the top 10-15 programs, the next 30-40 programs and then the remaining ones.
