Re: Opening Weekend
Hey, at least we didn't add to the "leading after 6 innings" statistic. Let's be optimistic.

Re: Opening Weekend
We've got a lot of young pitchers that must learn to trust their stuff and throw strikes. Way to many free passes and hit batters in the first 3 games to overcome. Hopefully they get over the learning curve fast. Some home cooking might help too.

Re: Opening Weekend
I'm 64 and I'm faster that that runner and NO 3rd base coach would send me.....I'd say after 4 years and starting freshman pitchers that our Coach is in trouble....This seems on par as bad as Capel's performance.....but I'll wait until mid season to say " Off with his head"

He was given 3 more years after the team has gotten worse every year under his management.AppDawg wrote:3 seasons counting this onetjpappy wrote:How much time is left on Jones' contract?

Re: Opening Weekend
I'm guessing you're confusing the baseball rule about not making the first or third out of an inning at third base. The time to take a gamble at home IS with two outs. The thinking is, if you hold the runner at third, even with the best hitters at the on-deck circle, you stand only about a 35 percent chance of the next batter driving him in. Whereas, if you send the runner, the defensive team must 1) field the ball cleanly, 2) make an accurate throw to the plate, 3) catch the ball cleanly, and 4) apply the tag. Baseball experts prefer to force the defense to make the play in that situation.Boone Goon wrote:Last out of the inning...you just don't do that!BUTCH1991 wrote:I'm aggressive when I coach 3rd, but that's just bad.T-Dog wrote:Look at the play starting at the 1:00 mark in the video. While we're talking about situational baseball, baseball is the only sport I know of in which it is smarter for the trailing team to employ "conservative" offensive and defensive strategies in the later innings. In other words, if we were trailing in the later innings when the play in question occurred, then we would have been smarter to err on the side of caution by holding the runner at third. Preventing an out was more important that gambling on scoring a run.

Re: RE: Re: Opening Weekend
I agree with all this, when I was coaching my favorite thing was to run someone into an out at home. Make the defense make a play. I hated for an inning to close out with a runner on third. However, dang, that was a slow roller not even deep in left. That was a weak (but accurate) throw and it still got him by a mile. That looked more like a brain fart or desperation than strategy to me.AppGrad78 wrote:I'm guessing you're confusing the baseball rule about not making the first or third out of an inning at third base. Whether you agree with sending the runner on that play or not, one thing is for certain: BJ is going for loss #100 this afternoon.

Actually, I believe the game has been moved to Saturday as a DH off the mountain to Hickory.
