Playoff attendance
Playoff attendance
Can someone please explain why attendance at playoff games is so much lower than during the regular season? I looked back just a few years and it seemed like the playoff attendance Is typically 20% lower than the regular season average. I'd just like an explanation. Thanks.

Re: Playoff attendance
I have wondered that for years. I just don't understand why we will have close to 30K fans to watch us play Savannah State in a game that is going to be a rout but can only have 16-17K fans for a playoff game with meaning on a beautiful day in December. As a season ticket holder, I would be willing to either be forced to purchase playoff tickets with the season tickets (if we fail to have a playoff game at home, then we would have a "credit" for the next season - or they could "give" us a few basketball tickets in order to get a few folks to go to the Holmes Center! ) or just raise each game ticket by $5 and then just send us a playoff ticket if we make it!
At least the folks who were at the game on Saturday were loud and into the game.

Re: Playoff attendance
People can't plan for these games months in advance like they can for the regular season. Also, the weather is usually much colder this time of year and lots of people have pre-holiday comittments. Other than that I have no idea.

Do the students still get into regular season games at no charge? I believe they have to pay to get into a playoff game. That could impact student attendance.

Re: Playoff attendance
Students got in for free this year. The school picked up the entire tab.
As for the playoff games. I really don't think there is one main reason. It's a bunch of little ones.

Re: Playoff attendance
Give me those 16K on Saturday over the 30K crowd for Montana, and that's no disrespect to the crowd for the Montana game. Saturday, it was outstanding.

Re: Playoff attendance
I was at the game, attendance was low, but the group that was there was loud and strong.
As I both arrived and left the game I saw students wandering around campus who clearly didn't attend the game. I do not understand that myself. But hey, my daughter, who is waiting on her ASU acceptance is not necessarily a big football fan, but hopefully will never miss a home game starting in 2013.

It set a record for the first home play-off game in KBS.sixtoes9134 wrote:I was at the game, attendance was low, but the group that was there was loud and strong.

Re: Playoff attendance
I agree this was one of the loudest crowds I've been around at App no matter how many were in attendance. The third play in that video was a delay of game too they just didn't call it.
Wonder what the decibel levels were for it.

Re: Playoff attendance
The fans in attendance were loud and carried their weigh, but the overall attendance for the game was way down, even to playoff standards. From my view in 213 east side, sections 201, 202, 206, and 207 were basically empty. For the students, sections 101, 107, and the endzone were only partially full. I believe that App State gets a lot of "tourist fans" attending a game for the game day experience, but I can't understand why so many season ticket holders opt out, even when they get a free parking pass. These are experienced fans that know the process and can plan accordingly. It simply boggles my mind.

I read somewhere that it was the highest for an opening play-off game in Boone.appgrunt71 wrote:The fans in attendance were loud and carried their weigh, but the overall attendance for the game was way down, even to playoff standards. I agree about season ticket holders.

Re: Playoff attendance
I know attendance was low, but the volume was not. There were times that I could not even hear the piped in music because the fans were so loud! The 4th quarter was probably the most electric I have heard that stadium all season -- 16k or 30k!

Wish we had that exact crowd for every game. It was the best in years. these people were really into it.

Re: Playoff attendance
I think one thing that needs to be considered is that all season tickets are counted during the regular season for attendance but they may not be all used during the plalyoffs. I, for one, have 4 season tickets but only bought 3 for last week's game. The people in front of me have 8 and only bought 4 because of prior obligations with some of their group. And I'm sure you have many corporate season tickets that weren't purchased for the playoffs.
But with the crowd last week I know our die hard fan base is growing. Where in the past we were lucky to get 10,000 we are now getting upwards of 17,000 for the early rounds. I'll take last week's crowd any day. But this may all be a moot point if, as David Jackson said at the end of his broadcast Saturday, we have played our last FCS playoff game.

Which means we have played our final game ever for a national title. The future for us is the GoDaddy.com and RL Carriers Bowl.
