Men's Golf

Unread post by McLeansvilleAppFan » Mon Apr 25, 2016 11:48 am

During day 2 - App is in 11th place out of 11 schools. Dead last by 3 strokes as I type this.
This is my very generic signature added to each post.

Because we are never in the hunt...We've never been in the NCAA tourney..in fact never sniffed it. The COA is going to require more money and rather than see student fees raised again....we need to start looking where it makes sense to save.

My first post here as I usually just take in what everybody else has to say, but I gotta weigh in on this. I would really hate to see us drop mens golf, reason being, my son got his education because of mens golf and Coach Dicus as he saw enough in him to give him a part scholarship. And because of that, and the people he met and communicated with he has squarely landed on his feet after graduating and is doing very very well with the company he now works for. These folks that own and run these large companies love athletes like that because they know to be an athlete and graduate on time, that it takes some real commitment. My son learned more about how to manage himself and his time than I could ever teach Him and getting rid of mens golf just removes that possibility for someone else. However, I do realize the financials and other things that go with having a program and how priorities have to be made. It would just be really sad for me personally.

Did see they jumped ahead of the Stink for 10th place. Gotta love beating the Stink in anything! :)

I have a colleague who played golf at Pfeiffer University and who received an offer to play golf at Appalachian out of high school. He says our coach (was the coach back then as well) is a colossal douche bag. That might be part of the reason we suck.

I doubt we drop golf as everyone in the conference (excluding the football only members), including incoming Coastal Carolina have golf. I think the sports currently residing outside of the Sun Belt footprint are likely first to go in the event of program cuts.

We are climate challenged when it comes to fielding a competitive golf team in the South. The most talented players want to play as often as possible year round.

I can buy that. We should probably look at a few more also.

I though we had an indoor practice area in Varsity.

Is there really that much cost for the golf teams at App? Do we offer much in the way of scholarships? Do we fly the golf teams to tournaments? How many tournaments do the teams play in a season?

Again i have no clue what the golf budget is or how many scholarships there are...bu for the sake of a WAG (wild ass guess)
Coach $75,000 Travel $25,000 Schollies $30,000/ Misc. $25,000. Just assuming i'm in the neighborhood that is $155,000 which would give 155 other athletes $1,000 a year toward the COA. Boone is just not conducive to year-round golf as some have said. The alternative is more donations and one that is not an alternative is raising student fees. We have to start re-defining our priorities and it is expensive keeping up with the big boys until College presidents and Boards decide to reign in coach salaries and stop stupid spending.

I am certain we have some type of indoor practice facility, but I doubt that helps attract top talent. Given the choice of practicing inside or playing and practicing outside year round, I would opt for the latter. I however have never been a top talent golfer so I am just speculating.

I was talking to a UNCC golfer from England the other night. They've been to Japan & California for a tourney, flown all over have an OUTDOOR practice facility and they have a bunch of scholarships.......They are able to play Quail Hollow and sneak down to Pinehurst. We just dont have the money.

They are old racquet ball courts.
That's what I do. I gripe and I know things.

Obviously none of us are in charge of athletic decisions (thank god) but if we were there are a bunch of compelling arguments for dropping golf. I assume we have a women's golf coach as well who makes a decent salary and we have comparable annual costs that Rekdiver took a stab at (probably not too far off). I would have to think that climate issues, that will always be in play, have to come into play. Over the past 30 years or so what has been our best overall showing for both teams in a conference or national scale?

YOu can see the historical record on Appstatesports.com under the golf tab.....It's a pretty dismal record imo.
