Re: Shawn Elliot as next Coach?
If Shawn comes back it is because he loves Appalachian State. His earning potential is far greater if he were to stay on his current path. As far as making the "hard choices", one would have to consider how many years a coach has left on their contract. Can App afford to pay a coach to not coach?Kgfish wrote:You would be wise to hold such comments when you don't know the real story. Tim Horton has more integrity and class in his little finger than most people do in their entire body. He is also one of the hardest working assistant coaches in the country and was recognized by Rivals.com and ESPN.com as one of the top recruiters in the nation. This board has a bad case Of short memory and grass is greener on the other side syndrome. While he was gone, all everyone wanted was Satterfield back. Now that he's here, just about anybody else will do.
Hasn't advanced very far? Going to the Mtn West from ASU is a bigger jump than what Scott accomplished in two stops. You must think jumping BACK to FCS from FBS is more impressive than going from Air Force to Arkansas. He has coached under some of the best coaches in college football. Frank Broyles, Ken Hatfield, Fisher DeBerry, Bill Snyder, Houston Nutt and Petrino - who is a jerk but a smart football coach. Coaching in the Big XII, Mountain West and SEC is a tad more daunting than a couple of years at Toledo and FIU or two years coaching offensive line coach at South Carolina. Good luck trying to convince people Satterfield's or Elliot's experience is more impressive than Horton's.
Why you guys keep thinking Elliot and Satterfield will bring back the magic og 05, 06 & 07 baffles me. There were other good coaches involved who are long gone, not to mention a couple of guys wearing #7 & #14. Do you think Elliot or Satterfield will make the hard decision and fire the defensive staff? Did you know Scott and Jones were business partners a few years back building houses together in the off season? Did you know Scott was ready to give up coaching before a chance meeting landed him back in Boone this year? Did you know Elliot was ready to jump ship and take a job at Davidson after the '04 season, but Coach Moore would not give him a recomendation? After going to USC Elliot gushed on and on about how he bled Garnet and Black and was a life long Gamecock fan. I'm so sorry he had to slum down to playing at ASU. If he loves the Roosters that much he can keep his ass stay in Columbia.
As far as what he said when he took the USC job, what was he supposed to say?
Say what you want, but I promise you he doesn't feel like he "slummed down" by playing for ASU. Don't question his love for Appalachian State and the place he has spent most of his adult life. If he ends up back in Bonne that should be very clear

Kgfish, I believe you and I have had a disagreement or two before but I agree 100% with your comments on Tim Horton. He is a very classy guy who I feel is perfectly qualified to lead our program into a possible FBS transition.Kgfish wrote: You would be wise to hold such comments when you don't know the real story. Devaluing him because he worked under Petrino for a few years is extremely unfair. The blame for Bobby Petrino wasting school funds on his mistress falls on one person, Bobby Petrino. Horton is a good man that any of us would be proud to have represent Appalachian State.
As you mentioned, he is regarded as one of the top recruiters in the nation. The value in having one of the top recruiters in the country with experience in the most powerful conference in college football would be immense. He is very well connected and would carry a lot of weight on the recruiting trail.
Also, it is worth noting that he has a great relationship with Scott Satterfield. He was on the coaching staff all four years Scott played at Appalachian and they were on the staff together for one season in 1998. I don't think anybody wants Satterfield gone, there is nobody I'd rather have running the offense and I think it is safe to say that Horton feels the same. Bringing him in would likely leave the offensive staff (which I am quite fond of) intact and provide some continuity on that side of the ball while allowing him to make the necessary changes on defense.
There has been a lot of debate about whether we should go with an "App guy" like SS or Elliott who played at ASU and learned under Coach Moore or an outsider. I think Horton is the perfect middle ground. He got his start under Jerry in 1990, loves Appalachian and the Boone area but has spent 14 years away from the program coaching in the FBS ranks.
Whether the search will go beyond Satterfield and Elliott remains to be seen but not giving Horton a look would be a shame, because he is an excellent candidate.

Re: Shawn Elliot as next Coach?
Satterfield seems to have the job locked up. I'm sure the "national search" is just in accordance with policy. If you look at the sequence of events, it just wouldn't make a whole lot of sense for it to be any other way.

It is my understanding that our assistant coaches do not have long-term contracts, they are year to year.

GoApps93 I know all about Elliot and have since he came to ASU. He was an emotional player and is the same as a coach, some call him a hot head. More than a few people I know think he is a smart azz. I still can see him running over to the stands during games screaming at the fans to make noise. After that some people I know began calling him the cheerleader coach. Is that the face ASU needs on its football program? After his first USC / GA game two years ago - won by SC - Shawn met Stacy Searles at midfield and said something to the effect of " it looks like the pupil showed the teacher a thing or two today." Searles was not amused. Way to stay classy Elliot.

Re: Shawn Elliot as next Coach?
kgfish, that quote in the post was not originally mine. I messed up the quote when I replied with it. I'm pretty much in agreement with you as far as not thinking Elliot is the best choice for Head Coach. I don't, however, question his love for ASU and I don't think he now thinks he was "slumming" when he came to App. But I would bet that he did when he was not able to play for USC. I'm sure lots of our players would have loved to played for whatever FBS/BCS team they grew up rooting for but once they finish their careers at ASU they never lose their love for the school and cherish their time there. I would not, however, expect a former athlete at ASU to choose us over a bigtime job at another school. I would suprise me greatly and make me go hmmm if Sean were to leave USC to return to ASU. And I won't question his feelings for his time here if he doesn't. His career has taken a much better than Scott's did and I would think he'd be in line for bigger jobs at bigger schools if he stays at USC. Now if and when Spurrier decides to retire or leave USC or decide Sean's time is done I could see him coming back as HC or OC. But I'd also think another SEC school would be glad to have him.Kgfish wrote:Mike we can disagree on the little stuff, but what matters is we agree on the really important stuff! So he got his position wrong. Klein is the best running back in the Big12. Hes an athlete playing QB not the other weay around and Prince obviously saw that athletisism.
