Robinhood is alive and on the prowl in the NC university system; planning to lure students away from the ASUs, UNCCs and ECUs to the WCUs and Winston-Salem States of our "world."
Proud triple-degree App grad--Classes of '66, '70 and '81.
If it happens to the Apps, it happens to me!

Yea, that's the beginning of the end for Western as we know it. No way that is sustainable. I assume that is cutting tuition by at least $2500 per semester. They will slash and burn that place to as the article says "a glorified community college".

Be wary, looks like a trend (cut cut cut) across the country. App may be on the clock!

Interesting that the bill's author is a graduate of WCU. Supposedly the the shortfall is covered by a general fund, not sure if it is a UNC system fund or the general state budget. I suppose they could raise housing fees to cover the shortfall. The Catamount forums seem to think this is great for WCU. I don't see it happening though.

The Commie rhetoric is doing its damage even though it looks like Bernie isn't going to win the primary.

If you needed any proof that the State Legislators have completely lost their minds this is it.

If an institution can't cover their bills, don't further subsidize it.
As for Bernie and free education, I hope his wife isn't involved.

"If an institution can't cover their bills, don't further subsidize it." "Commie rhetoric, Robinhood, etc." Be careful, that logic would shut down our athletics program that only exist because of a large redistribution of wealth that subsidizes a 60% operating deficit.
However, it makes sense to subsidize public goods like education, everyone that understands ECON 1010 gets this. The issue, as someone pointed out, is how it is delivered. We had one of the best systems in the world, so we were doing something right. There is always room for improvement but I doubt slashing funding and turning things upside down will turn out very well for App and the UNC system. As someone pointed out, it would be better to keep what works and simply eliminate a campus or two.
But as it stands, this is not an isolated action. They are coming after App as well. Actually, they have been coming after App for years now, and its hurting our students and campus. Not enough sections for student demand, insufficient instructional resources, the best faculty and staff leaving in droves, and so on. This is just one of many actions taken by Raleigh to undermine App and the UNC system. From taking funds from UNC to pay for an outside vendor to provide online programs to the ill-advised guaranteed admissions program to force reduced enrollment, its all very troubling.

Re: WCU $1000/year tuition
Sorta reminds you of the Taliban and how they view school doesn't it? It's of no value. These idiot legislators are trying to hide behind the bathroom portion of HB2 and make that the issue du jour while they ruin our state economy. I hate to say it but the Republicans gotta go if we want to restore education AT ALL LEVELS where we used to enjoy national recognition.

Never thought I would live long enough to say this. You folks need to get rid of the republicans in your legislature. They are going to destroy the state. I left 15 years ago but my kids and grand kids are still there so I really hope you guys get rid of these idiots. Your legislature HATES education on all levels. Wake county in particular is no better. I have a daughter teaching in a trailer that is a rat trap. How on earth they get companies and individuals to move there is beyond me. I loved NC and this just breaks my heart.
Re: WCU $1000/year tuition
I read about this a couple days ago on both the Chronicle of Higher Education and InsideHigherEd.com websites. The article below has more factual information instead of mainly opinion, but as pointed out in the NO Opinion piece, the plan is very short (as in none) on the details of how the legislature plans to pay for these massive cuts to the revenue of the five named universities.
Specifically both articles suggest the measure is aimed at closing or significantly altering the status of the four HBCU's on the list (UNC Pembroke, Elizabeth City State, Fayetteville State and Winston Salem State) and that WCU was thrown in there as a token non HBCU to hid that fact.
I don't know whether that is true, but it does appear that a legislature that does't seem to care for higher education is being awful proactive in making radical changes to the UNC system.
As some of you have alluded to, while Appalachian is not mentioned (this time) this is such a big deal that it is bound to affect Appalachian in the future.

I love the university where I am at now and the job is great but there is not a day that goes by that I do not wish we were back in Boone. Just yesterday it was 62 and rainy and overcast and my wife and I both commented on the fact that we miss "Boone weather" days like this.
I hope all is well with you after the surgery. I have a hotmail account for a few things and in there I keep an email that you sent me on 6/16/2005 with the subject line "Ethics Question." Every time I open that account (about twice a week) I think of you.
I also think of you anytime I hear the name Furman in any context. I aways have to pause after that name and add the obligatory ...SUCKS in there.

That is true. African-American 35%, American Indian 15%, Hispanic 5%. It is about 60% minority but far from a majority African-American.
