Re: Latrell Gibbs Ineligible for 2016 Season
This is a failure on Gibbs' part, no doubt, but it is also a failure on our program's part. No way a player of this magnitude should not have been closely watched, tutored and managed. This kid was akin to Armanti in the defensive backfield. Armanti was an honor roll student, so very different from that perspective. But this is a colossal program failure. Time to examine how acedemics are handled and revamp. There's no way they didn't know the kid was struggling at this point.
Yes, I know it's ultimate the kids responsibility. And it is his maturity and owning his future that makes the difference, but this is a program failure, clear and simple. Ball dropped.

Someone remind me, when did Pinckney get hurt last year - in camp or in an early game?

"No player in our program, regardless of how talented he is, is above our team, our university or our community," Coach Scott Satterfield said in a statement. "Repeated behavior that does not meet the high standards that we hold our student-athletes to will not be tolerated. I truly hope that Sean gets on the right track and is able to utilize the talent that he possesses in the future. I wish him nothing but the best."ashugh wrote:This is a failure on Gibbs' part, no doubt, but it is also a failure on our program's part. This is from when Sean Price had his legal issues. I would suspect Satterfield holds the same values today. College isn't for everyone, and unless you are an elite basketball player who can successfully go one and done, you've got to bring more than just your athletic talents to the university. Hope he can bounce back.

They can't do the work for him. I don't know this for a fact, but knowing Satt and Company, I feel confident that they did know of his struggles and did everything they could to help him.ashugh wrote:This is a failure on Gibbs' part, no doubt, but it is also a failure on our program's part. One guy not making the grade is a "colossal program failure" and cause to revamp "how academics are handled"? Believe that's a bit of an overreaction. Might want to go back and review the releases on team GPA and APR before we start calling for wholesale changes.ashugh wrote:This is a failure on Gibbs' part, no doubt, but it is also a failure on our program's part. I had to go to summer school one year at App to get back in for the Fall and I didn't play sports. It happens. Took me a while to get my crap together too.

Re: Latrell Gibbs Ineligible for 2016 Season
This rant is a great example of what is wrong in this country today. Clear and simple it is HIS failure. HE is the one who needs to take responsibility. He did not live up to the requirements to stay eligible. NOBODY is responsible other than him. Now with that said I hop e he takes advantage of the help that is not offered all students and gets back on track. I want to see him successful on AND off the field. Personal responsibility will be something that will help him for the rest of his life and I am pulling for him.ashugh wrote:This is a failure on Gibbs' part, no doubt, but it is also a failure on our program's part. Re: Latrell Gibbs Ineligible for 2016 Season
ashugh: I'm sorry but you are very much incorrect on this. I cannot go into it any more than to say they did try and help in several different ways. Sometimes people are unwilling to accept the change even if it's made to try and help them. A clear path has been laid out for him and it's up to him now to do the work and get back on the right path. Our program is willing to do anything to help him and any other player to succeed, not because they are good players on the field but because our staff wants every student-athlete to get a degree and have a chance for a good life after football, or any other sport for that matter. Not every school can say that.

Re: Latrell Gibbs Ineligible for 2016 Season
Bottom line, no one is to blame but Gibbs. He has more tools and opportunities than most of the students that attend any state university or college. He has tutors, a study hall, and support from a team of advocates. He is responsible for his actions no one else is, he let his team down and himself. I hope he learns from this. I really do.

Maybe he'll be like "Sticks", come back the next year and win a NC. That's Jason Hunter!

Re: RE: Re: Latrell Gibbs Ineligible for 2016 Season
I don't know any details but I would bet he was given a roadmap to stay eligible and was offered every opportunity to get it together. He is a great player, maybe he assumed someone would "work it out " for him like I am sure it happens many other places. Oh well, one man can't make or break us. If that is the case we have a long way to go to be big time.firemoose wrote:ashugh: I'm sorry but you are very much incorrect on this. This could end up being a good thing for him. Sometimes you need small step back's to help you build character.

Re: Latrell Gibbs Ineligible for 2016 Season
So how is the entire program to blame for his lack of an ethos? He is responsible for his actions not one else is. If this were true we would all be held accountable for others actions in our society, for example a man buys an ice cream cone and throws the napkin and half eaten cone on the sidewalk instead of the trash can, is this the responsibility of the person who sold it to him? Or the owner of the shop?ashugh wrote:This is a failure on Gibbs' part, no doubt, but it is also a failure on our program's part. The ball dropped is pointing fingers at the program, the ball dropped is your post and thoughts like this.

Damn that hurts. Wake up call for everyone else. Nice to know players can't take BS classes forever and just play ball
