I guess this proves that an SEC positions coach makes more than a lower-level FBS or FCS head coach. At least what we could swing.
Still hoping for Tim Horton, but I assume Sattefield is a lock.

Would be stunned if its anyone but Satterfield at this point. He was brought back to get snubbed for this job.
Re: elliot to stay in co-bum-bia
@footbalscoop on Twitter is a great follow for coaching searches big and small...he says his understanding is that Satterfield will "interview" (he used quotation marks) this weekend. If it goes well, the job is his.Appersrule wrote:Would be stunned if its anyone but Satterfield at this point. He was brought back to get snubbed for this job.
Don't know what he could do in an interview that could give Cobb 2nd thoughts, but we'll see.
I'm sure some will be up in arms if Satterfield is hired without the "nationwide search", but if we're honest, we all knew why he left an FBS school to come back.

Re: elliot to stay in co-bum-bia
I won't be the least bit upset if Satterfield is the next head coach at ASU. He's exactly what we need. Raised in the program, so there is continuity (a PR boost too to the outsiders who are ripping ASU for letting Coach Moore go). He keeps the spread here, which has become our calling card for recruiting like the TO is to GSU. He's young, but as far as I can discern he won't be looking to bolt after 2-3 years of success. I'm not saying he's a 20-year guy - that will never happen again I think.
Will he have growing pains taking over the whole program and replacing a local legend? Absolutely. He will need to take a more hands-off approach to the OC role IMO, but I have to imagine he knows people with similar mindsets he could bring in. If he decides to keep the OC role to himself as well, that might be a little area to watch.

Re: elliot to stay in co-bum-bia
No surprise to me. I wonder if his coming up here was just as a favor to Cobb and the school, to make things look like there really was a search. I'm 100% for Satterfield getting the job. It is what he was brought back for and we should honor that commitment.
In light of what all is coming out about the decisions that were made last January, it all makes sense. I think we are getting a great young head coach in Satterfield that has proven himself as an exceptional offensive mind. There will be no need to blow up the coaching staff (except maybe some work on the defensive side), and he's a guy that will likely want to stick around for a few years. He left to get that experience at the FBS level and did very well there. What more can we ask of the man?
Nothing against Elliott. I love the guy and I think he'll make a fine head coach someday, but with all that seemed to be in place for the last 11 months, giving Scott the job is the right way to go, IMO. The situation has already been allowed to get ugly enough without screwing Satterfield also.

Re: elliot to stay in co-bum-bia
I agree with you 100%. I think a lot of ASU Nation want Satterfield. He knows the system and will continue the spread offense we have. I just don't want to go back to 2003 and before with the boring power I or whatever we used to run. The spread is fun. Current players and recruits came/may come here because of it and some Coach Moore. Good think is everyone knows Satterfield and it should be fun to watch in the coming years if he is the next coach. 35+ points a game again.....rbarthle17 wrote:I won't be the least bit upset if Satterfield is the next head coach at ASU. And if we don't make changes to the defensive staff we will continue to need to score 35+ points per game in order to have a chance.AppState89 wrote:I agree with you 100%. Re: elliot to stay in co-bum-bia
I think SS makes alot of sense, he has basically had a job interview for the entire year, I bet it was tough on him, everytime he turned around there was Cobb or one of his associates watching and evaluating him. I also love the fact that his wife is from Boone, his inlaws still live in Boone, and his own family lives in Raleigh. When he took the OC job, he said one of the reasons he came back was to raise his kids near their grandparents. I agree, I doubt he will be a 20 year coach, but becouse of his ties to the community, I think it will take a special HC job for him to leave Boone.
Re: elliot to stay in co-bum-bia
I could care less what offense we run, as long as we execute it properly and win. Might be easier to recruit spread kids now because so many teams run it...but that's just the problem...so many teams run it! Back in '05, and even into '07, it was a bit of a novelty...but I would guess 90% of DI teams run some version of it, or have a package of plays utilizing it.AppState89 wrote: I agree with you 100%. I think our offense will be fine - but I hope Satterfield can make the right decisions to get our defense headed in the right direction. I've really only been happy with our defense once since '06 - and that was '11. Unfortunately, our offense was in disarray then.

Re: elliot to stay in co-bum-bia
I was hoping for a National search, and if the decision was Satterfield, then sobeit. But the more I think about it, and the more divided the fanbase gets over the events of the past week, the quicker we name someone the better. That Satterfield is liked by most on both sides of the issue can go a long way to mending some fences.

Re: elliot to stay in co-bum-bia
Totally agree with making Scott Satterfield the permanent (nothing is permanent) Head Coach.
Would hate to not reward the sacrificies he has made for us these many years. Smart guy that can make a decision and should bring App State much success. Has experience in the MAC and the Sun Belt.
Would hate to create a larger divide by not appointing him HC.

Re: elliot to stay in co-bum-bia
quetion about yosef funding, why cant any of the funding go to headcoach salary? I believe, though Im not entirely sure, that a large portion of Roy Williams salary comes from the Rams Club. If this is true, what prevents us from doing the same?

I think Elliot may have been here for 2 reasons: 1) he had an open weekend when he could return and 2) he was here to honor Coach Moore because he knew(was told) it would be his last game.

Re: elliot to stay in co-bum-bia
Thought ASU had progressed beyond the small school mentality of simply hiring from within. Why even go through the charade of a national search? ASU athletic history is littered with the mistakes of promoting from within. Roachel Laney, Mark Dreibilbiss, Troy Heustess, Barbie Breedlove, and Jason Capel are just a few that come to mind. Furman almost exclusively used the practice until it ruined the football program. There is much more to running a football program than calling plays. I don't think Elliot or Satterfield have the savvy or experience to be the head of the program, esp following a guy like JM. Have to get the emotion out of the way and pick a coach based on experience. Always impressed with Kerwin Bell's Jacksonville teams. They played hard and smart, blocked and tackled impressively and were solid scheme wise. They just didn't have the horses to keep up. he has a great playing and coaching pedigree. But it looks like we're going to get a guy who was ready to give up coaching before coming back to ASU.

Re: elliot to stay in co-bum-bia
With you, Kgfish...there seems to be this idea that what we're doing here is so different and special from any other program in the country. It isn't - it needs the exact same thing every program needs - the best possible coach our budget can provide. With the facilities we've put together and the support we have, we should have a big pool to choose from.
I've even heard someone say that they like SS because "his wife's from here, so he'll stay a long time" - we also need face the reality that at our level, we will lose a coach if he's hugely successful. I am okay with that as long as we make a good hire afterwards.

Re: elliot to stay in co-bum-bia
I never implied he we should hire him so he would stay 20 years, or whatever, what I did imply was, unlike other coaches, who have no ties to App, he would not necessarly be out the front door the first chance he got (see Buzz). Bottom line is we have got to watch SS for an entire year, and from what I can see, this guy can flat out coach, the question is, can he be successful running an entire program, not just an offense.
