Re: US News college rankings
Those a universities are considered national schools. App is a regional university. One of the big reasons we are unlikely to get into the AAC.
Nonetheless, we are ranked as the 9th best Regional University in the south:

The link you provided is to national universities. That is not the classification within which App is included. App is classified as a regional comprehensive university. The difference has to do with research and number of doctoral programs. App is prominently included in the rankings as the #3 public university in the South and #9 overall in the South.

Also, check out UNCG and ECU's overall ratings (24/100 and 26/100, respectively).
Appalachian's overall rating is 78/100.

I think there are a lot of variables there. First, the mission of the university would have to change. The current mission focuses on teaching. Second, the UNC BOG would have to approve those doctoral programs. That seems pretty unlikely, as they torpedoed a PhD. program (psychology, I believe) that was all ready to go.
I think we'd like to have more doctoral programs, but I don't think we're likely to change the faculty focus from teaching to research.
