You are comparing the actions of two non-student athletes to all of the problems Miami has had over the years with their athletes, which goes beyond just the football team?

This hardly registered on the nation's radar. Stop trying to act like this did that much damage to the U. I think at the end of the day, everyone is happy that the incident lacks the evidence to back up what appears to be a false claim. Maybe I missed it but I don't see to many App fans siding with Sophie. I'm not sure you'd see a tear shed on this board if Sophie is charged but then again, I don't believe she ever approached law enforcement with her allegations.

I wouldn't call that one (2008) a national firestorm. We've had a few hoaxes in the last decade. That kid wanted to commit insurance fraud and report a phony break in. He made the mistake of telling the cops that the guy was armed and that he ran toward campus, which prompted a lock down and a panic in the wake of the VT shooting.

We had two football players falsely accused of sexual assault. They were vindicated to the tune of a civil settlement with the school.

We had another rape hoax a year or two ago. The girl finally confessed to making it up when she realized her claim was taking valuable police resources away from the search for an actual missing student at the time.

Kids make stuff up. The Missou student who claimed a truck full of Klansmen chased him around in a pick up truck, which started a national race debacle on college campuses and ended up getting the chancellor fired, was a complete hoax. Duke lacrosse was a hoax (although that was a ghetto stripper rather than a student). The UVA rape story where the girl carried her mattress around campus in protest was a lie.

Sorry about the Miami thing but the world forgot about this incident 30 minutes after innitially reading about it. Hardly a national firestorm and hardly unique.

Thank you gonzo for the reasonable response. I disagree that it was forgotten, as post in the UNC board, UF board, FSU board, and others can show. Even this thread, not started by me, was from someone that remembered the incident more than 30 minutes later. The fact that Spohie bragged about the over 1000 shares, and that other people and groups spread it out as another case of football players getting away with sexual assault means that is did go national.

In each of the cases you outline above, the hoaxer was punished. In this case, that has yet to happen, so it is still open as far as the victims of her crime are concerned. What if there had been no video, and she pointed at our starting QB and said he was the one that did it? It would have taken months, if ever, to clear his name. Jameis Winston, for example, still has that taint on him even after going to court. I honestly don't know if he was innocent or not. But in this case, I can see that our players were innocent. Justice should be done.

This WOULD HAVE done damage if not for the video proving the lie. The attempt at doing that level of damage should be punished. I am VERY happy that no Canes player did what they were accused of, and in fact when the allegation first occurred, I was disappointed in that player or players for ruining what had been a great season and a great game.

As for those siding with Sophie, that was on the thread that is now locked. Even on this one, yosef said that the Miami players were wrong and or stupid for going one row into the band, which was part of Sophie's accusations. As I said above, I also sided with Sophie, until it turned out she was lying. Glad to see that most of the others here are also siding with Miami's innocence.

I hope it never happens to you, since you are so internet tough and thick skinned and all. Miami takes more abuse in the media than others, so I beleive we are a bit more thick skinned than the average fans. Get ESPN to demand the death penalty and have Sports Illustrated demand your football team be shut down, TWICE, and have NCAA investigators cheat and lie and pay off lawyers to attack your school, and let's see how "thin skinned" you appear.

Yes, I am keeping this alive, because it has not concluded yet, just as the Mathew Haney case was not concluded until his sentencing. And yes, we have our own message board, but nobody there is siding with the accuser and claiming it was all Miami's fault and that we are all scum and that by cutting through the band we deserved this attack. It seems we agree over there that this woman and her minions attempted to do damage to Miami, their players, and their city by claiming we are all dreadlocked animals unable to pass by a white woman without groping them.
