Satterfield said he will retain some members of ASU’s current coaching staff.

“How many I don’t know yet,” he said. “I’ll be going through that process in the next few weeks and talk to them individually and see what direction we need to go, but we will retain some of the guys on the staff.”

He does plan to hire an offensive coordinator, the role he had this past season.

225K? So Moore makes 230K last year and the guy that will lead us to FBS move makes basically the same?

But, he's a brand new Head Coach, young, and we are still in FCS (for now); Jerry was a long-time successful Head Coach, with 3 national championships, etc. And, we may have to pay off a coach or two if they are not retained -- still not clear how that might play out. If Scott does well and if ASU moves to FBS, his salary will move up pretty quickly, I think.

I've wondered if Horton might have had a slight edge over SS during interviews but would have required a lot more money. Either way I'm glad we have SS but can't help but wonder if $ came into the picture during the selection.

Fair enough. I wonder if that is already in line with Sun Belt conference head coach salaries? IMO if it is not then nothing is eminent in terms of a move.

The pay is in line with FCS coaches, and with Satterfields HC experience. Its his base salary, which does not include incentives, such as conference Championships, playoff berths, APR, Title game and National title. with a base of $225k, he could probably make near $300k in a NC season.

No need to pay someone 2x what they'd work for. If we move FBS, if Scott gets other offers, well then lets talk.

That's good because we can't afford 2X, FBS or not.

Of course it figured into the hire. It would have taken a bare minimum of $300 to get any other coach. Added to the $500K to buy out the last two years on Jones' ($85,800), Sloan's ($65,300) and probably Scott's ($120,000) contracts and that exceeds $600K. Adding new coaches at the same salaries would have run the number up close to $1 million. Cobb can say all he wants about not restricting the new coach in hiring their own staff. Anyone thinking ASU has that kind of cash in reserves, especially with the possibility of needing to pay a SoCon exit fee and entrance fee to another conference, is not thinking clearly.

Why would we need to pay him more. Its not like a Buzz Peterson situation where he has the name that would allow him to jump quickly, making you preempt a poaching with a higher salary (and apparently we still didn't pay enough to do that with Buzz). I'm sure he would have been excited to take the job for less (I doubt anyone is offering him more). If he has a couple good seasons we can quickly move to renegotiate his salary and extend his deal.
