Scholarships/New Recruiting Class

Unread post by HighPointApp » Sun Dec 16, 2012 8:25 pm

I tried to do some research prior to posting this, but if my calculations are right we have 13 scholarships to give for this upcoming class? Also we had 58 freshman on the roster. 21 Sophomores. 17 Juniors.

Tysean Holloway was redshirted but were any other freshman redshirted which provides us depth? What are needs besides DL, LB, RB, and another QB? Any other needs? Punter/Kicker? Let's break this thing down!!!!

IMO...defensive backs , running backs, and a QB in waiting. ASU could be really really good next year.

To my knowledge, here are the guys who took a redshirt in 2012:

RB Tysean Holloway
DB Dante Blackmon
TE Barrett Burns
OL Jamie Collmar
LB Olawale Dada
OL Tyson Fernandez
DB Alex Gray
RB/QB Paul Magloire
OL Matt Privette
DL/LB Tashion Singleton
DL Darian Small
DB Doug Middleton (Sophomore - Medical)

Of those guys, I'd say that Holloway, Blackmon and Middleton will almost certainly be starters. Collmar, Burns, Gray, Singleton and Small should all be in the rotation as well. Also, John Law may have taken a redshirt this season but I'm not sure. He registered statistics in 3 games, maybe someone else can confirm his status?

Our biggest needs have to be DB/LB with the graduation of Kimbrough, Grier, Anderson, Sanders and McCray. However, the returns of Middleton and Blackmon, along with the recent signing of Anthony Covington, should have a significant impact in the secondary.

John Law, Brandon McGowan, Jamal Ware and Greg Hall all have ability at the linebacker spot. McGowan may have the best shot to take over at MLB as a rising junior with some game experience but Law is going to push him. It will be interesting to see whether the coaches thinks that one of those guys could potentially move to the outside. Say what you want about Dale Jones as a DC but the man can flat out coach linebackers. I think that group will be just fine but we do need to recruit some depth.

Tysean Holloway should be ready to carry the load at RB with Michael Frazier in the mix to back him up. Utah transfer Eric Davidson could contribute as well as Paul Magloire. Magloire is a good athlete and has ability in the open field but he is brand new to the position. A lot is riding on Holloway stepping up as a redshirt freshman and I'd be very surprised if we did not add at least one more RB.

Satterfield will likely want to get a QB in there to compete for the starting job after Jamal's final season, so I expect we'll see one brought in. We do have some depth with Kam Bryant and Kalik Barnes both expected to return but signing a QB should be a priority, IMO. Barnes and Bryant both have talent but I wouldn't want to hand the job over without bringing in a recruit of my own if I were in SS's position. It would be a big job to put on a true freshman so getting a guy in the system this year could be important.

I also think that the OL is going to be addressed and based on some tweets that Scot Sloan has sent from the road, he's been going after some. We return all five starters but we need depth and competition up front. I think that Jamie Collmar will really push some guys this season but we always need more kids in the trenches.

Going to be a very interesting couple of months, the first recruiting class for a new head coach can really set the tone. Based on the early indications, I think we will all be happy with the final results.

I am pretty sure LB John Law was red shirted as well, because of a foot injury suffered at the beginning of the season. I am not a 100%. He saw some playing time until he got hurt then they debated bringing him back or trying to wait it out and give him a red shirt. Because we did not see him later in the season i believe he was red shirted.

How many verbal commits do we have at this time? Does anyone know if we have any interest in the RB from Hoke County - Detrez Newsome?

We are going to be "BAD A$$" next year!!!!!!! I'm sure there are a few recruits out there we will sign that will contend for a starting spot....we just haven't signed them yet....After they announce FBS, we will see them... We should be preseason top 3 IMO.

If this recruiting class is any good and we have a couple of guys who can contribute right away not only will this year be good but we should be pretty good the next 2-3 years. This team should win no less than 9 games in the regular season. It is a National Championship caliber team of which will be right up there with NDSU, GSU, and a couple others. Unless we get the injury bug this team has no excuse not to win 9 regular season games and win at least two playoff games if you look at the talent we have.

The usual recipe for a NC team (notice we have all of the following)

1. Experience, proven leader at QB. Jamal Jackson is that.

2. Good depth and talent on the DL and OL. We have size on the DL and lots of experience now. The OL got a lot of experience last year and will be helped by quality players who redshirted last year.

3. Able to establish a running game (Holloway is suppose to be better than anyone we had last year and that is hype coming from coaches and those who saw practice daily)

4. Look at our NC teams and they all had NFL talent on them. We have future NFL caliber players on this team. There is no doubt that Dante Blackmon, Sean Price, Andrew Peacock, Tony Washington, Jamal Jackson, Kendall Lamm, Ronald Blair, and maybe Doug Middleton can play in the pros somewhere, whether it is the NFL or CFL.

5. Last but not least you need solid coaching and with Ledford, Stepp, Scott, Sloan, and the other new coaches from last year I think we have a good staff.

I kept telling people last year before the season that 2013 would be our year and there is no reason not to put the hype on this team. They have everything a NC caliber team needs.

Wow. I love your optimism. Hope you're right.

Now a word from Debbie Downer.

1) The best punter we've had in ages is gone.
2) The two best linebackers we've had in ages are gone.
3) Our running backs will almost certainly take their first collegiate snaps on Labor Day weekend.
4) We are woefully thin at quarterback. Kalik Barnes and Kameron Bryant aren't chopped liver, but I'm more than a little nervous every time Jamal Jackson takes a hit.
5) Our tight ends weren't very productive.
6) Our returning field goal kickers weren't Georgia Southern bad, but they've got plenty of room for improvement.
7) Our offensive line needs to get better. Additionally, our defensive line has to threaten the quarterback more frequently, with or without the help of a blitz.
8) Our schedule includes road games at Montana and Georgia.
9) We assume that Dante Blackmon and Doug Middleton will return from their injuries as good as new. Unfortunately, that's not always the case.
10) A lot of you guys think Scott Satterfield can walk on water. I don't. There'll be some growing pains.

as for #1 and #2, App has reloaded with LBs and P/PK for a decade. IE Jacque Roman, DJ Smith, Jeremy Kimbrough, Pierre Banks. Rauche, Sam Martin, Neil Young, Matt Dodge. We've had talent waiting in the wings at those positions for a decade.

As for the TEs, with the OL getting 3 guys back healthy, and now with another year of experience and depth on the OL, we should be able to spare them from blocking more often, not to mention Barrett Burns comes out of HS looking like a great recievng threat.

Montana is WAY down this year, we thought our year was bad, theirs is a nightmare.

In the case of replacing our great line of LBs, the young ones in the past had the chance to be mentored by the older guys. The folks who will step into those roles really haven't had the benefit of interning with some of the greats.

How can we assume someone is ready to step in and take Sam Martin's place? I don't recall anyone else punting for us this year, so we don't really know how they will perform.

For someone who has shown such little faith in our program the last couple of years, you seem pretty optimistic that simply getting rid of Jerry Moore solves all concerns. I don't say that as a criticism of your view of Jerry Moore but clearly your world view has changed 180 degrees in a week's time.

I too, am optimistic about next year and am excited to see some new blood infused into the program. However, we do SS no favors if we expect him to be a miracle worker.

In the case of John Law, that is true. He just had one year to redshirt and learn from Grier/Kimbrough but Brandon McGowan and Jamal Ware will both be juniors with some game experience and two years of studying those guys. McGowan was a 3-star recruit out of high school that has paid his dues sitting behind an All-American, I expect big things out of him.

Ive always had faith in the program, just not in its leadership, and that only the case in the past 3 years.

Most schools make coaching transitions with the cupboards bare, and a coach that is new to the program. Neither of those scenarios fit this case.

I thought Drew Bailey showed some flashes last year at TE - but unless it's for blocking, I'm not too concerned about TE pass catching productivity. Our 3rd and 4th WRs next year would be starters for almost any other team in FCS.

It's pretty easy to get caught up in the enthusiasm of SS. I temper this with Brownie's comments about lack of recruiting over the past few years at the end of the Ill St. game. We have many ?marks. OLine DLine LB QB DB(safety) and for God's sake find a big bruising backso we don't kill Miller....and start having Sumler start catching punts and passes right now..............His speed has to get on the field.

I think #28 Ricky Fergueson also qualified as redshirt but not 100% sure!
