If it expanded to 8 teams, and the 8 spot automatically went to the top G5 school it would be a very lop sided game. Imagine Western Michigan playing Alabama in the first round.

But it makes sense, id bet a playoff game will get a lot more eyeballs than the Dollar General bowl. And teams would get the money not the bowl sponsors.
DG Bowl did pretty well this year.

Re: G5 Playoff
We have won our two bowl games by a combined five points. I'd say our games have been evenly matched. That's not to say that conference champs shouldn't be matched but we can't say we weren't in competitive, exciting games.

Re: G5 Playoff
I completely agree that we have had two excellent bowl games. No complaints from me on the Camellia Bowl. That said, we've been lucky and could just as easily have drawn Miami (Ohio) or Central Michigan. Last year Georgia Southern played Bowling Green (the Conference Champ). I just believe the current method of pairing teams in Bowl games for the G5 is haphazard and results in less interest. The strongest G5 team is the AAC but their conference champ goes to a bowl and plays a 6-6 ACC team. What does that prove? I don't understand why people believe that playing ANY P5 is somehow better than playing a great (champion) G5 team. I think that waters down a G5 championship by equating the achievement with mediocrity.hapapp wrote:We have won our two bowl games by a combined five points. We have been luck in our bowl games so far, but some of the match ups are just terrible.

Re: G5 Playoff
While I know it's unlikely, and there's probably some distinct rule against it since I haven't seen it mentioned, but what about a 16 team playoff? I would feel at least one or 2 G5's could get in, they'd probably always play the #1 and #2 seed, but we'd have our shot.

16 is too much. Most first round game would be pointless blowouts.ArmantiWaterSafety wrote:While I know it's unlikely, and there's probably some distinct rule against it since I haven't seen it mentioned, but what about a 16 team playoff? Re: G5 Playoff
Oh I agree they'd be blowouts more than likely, but we'd increase our "shot" as so many people right now say we have none. If we played our best game against Alabama and they played their worst, we'd maybe keep it within 45?/\PP ST/\TE GRAD 09 wrote:16 is too much. Most first round game would be pointless blowouts.

I think Bama's defense and special teams would outscore our offense. Not taking anything away from our team, but Alabama is damn good.ArmantiWaterSafety wrote:Oh I agree they'd be blowouts more than likely, but we'd increase our "shot" as so many people right now say we have none. Re: G5 Playoff
Only way I'd like a 16-team playoff would be if all 10 conference champs got auto-bids, and I don't see that happening unless the NCAA took it over. Even then, the number of games involved would probably extend the season too much.

Re: G5 Playoff
Well-written and well thought out. You can debate whether it's ideal to give up on other P5 tie-ins or whether rotating sites/opponents is better than a set bowl/opponent, but he makes a good case for a compelling idea.

Re: G5 Playoff
I like the idea of each G5 champion going to the solid bowl game. One would get the Access Bowl slot (NY6) and then four other bowls could rotate hosting the other four champions. Current G5 bowls in destination cities: Las Vegas, NOLA, Cure (Orlando), and Miami Beach Bowl.

Re: G5 Playoff
Seems like i posted this on the Sun Belt board a few weeks ago. Anyway, this makes much more sense than our current system and would grab more attention for our champs. It still gives us a shot at an Access Bowl to keep in touch with the P5. Win-win for G5.Saint3333 wrote:I like the idea of each G5 champion going to the solid bowl game. Re: G5 Playoff
First I don't care if you made it a 32 team playoff at some point you come up against Alabama. I am just not interested in that at all.
Make the bowls more rewarding. Well they are not there to be a reward for anything they are there to make money. If a 6-6 team is going to bring more fans you are going to be playing a 6-6 team. That takes me right back to a playoff. I am just not so worried about being considered second tier because we already are considered second tier. I just don't see what is wrong with proving we are the best of our own peers. Alabama and Clemson are not our peers and they never will be so why not go up against the best of the G5. Now before you get a chance to read this I am going to go run and get in my shelter.

Re: G5 Playoff
If it goes to 16 all 10 FBS conference champions get an auto bid. That leaves 6 at large. Anything different would be a farce. The G5 needs to grow a backbone and stand up at some point and put aside this "thank you sir, may I have another" mentality.ArmantiWaterSafety wrote:While I know it's unlikely, and there's probably some distinct rule against it since I haven't seen it mentioned, but what about a 16 team playoff? Doug Gillin was on the David Glenn show today with David Jackson hosting. He was talking about this subject and cost od playing at this level. I'll not comment because I did not digest what he said very well. Hopefully it will be on replay in a few days. It was in the last half hour of the show.
