ECU message boards

Unread post by sixtoes9134 » Fri Aug 10, 2012 5:51 am

Maybe its just too early, but the ECU message boards don't seem to have much to say about the App game just yet. In 2009, their boards were full of topics, threads, concerns, etc. many of them lurking our boards and talking smack.

I haven't seen much, if any of that so far.

If we are that much under the radar, I like it.

Based on what I've read on BYB, most seem to think the Pirates will win going away. I've seen a few mention that App could sneak up and beat them but the majority feel this should be a W and they'll get to see at least 2 QB's play. Their front 7 on defense will shut us down and their stable of backs and big WRs will have a field day on App's D. The Pirate fanbase is focused on the following week's game against the Gamecocks.

Agree. Last time they were pumped up for the game as there was a bunch of hype since we hadn't played in a long time. They still thought it would be a cakewalk but at least there was excitement on their part. This years game is setting up great. They only think the last game was close b/c they "took their feet off the gas". They had a much better team that year as well. Last year their defense was mauled and now they're breaking in a new QB.

I have no reason to believe their defense is going to be much better as they have to find 5 new starters. At QB they have 4 players competing for the #1 spot, that tells me they don't have a great QB ready to take control. They may find an adequate starter but if they have 4 and none have stood out then I doubt they'll be better than average.

They're looking past us to South Carolina. Hopefully we can keep the noise to a minimum before the game and just shock them on gameday.

Last time we played them almost exactly two years after beating Michigan. The hype was a lot more about us sadly back then. Now we are just an FCS team that didn't even get invited into C-USA. Makes a difference.

Hopefully they are primarily practicing with the Gamecocks and Latimore in mind and aren't worried about the spread offense from the little FCS school. With this being a noon game on 9/1 hopefully the Pirates are in the same physical shape they were the last time we played when the Apps picked up the pace in the 2nd half.

While the majority of the ECU faithful sees this as a gimme, it's doubtful that Ruff (and Wiley) will allow the Pirates to overlook this game. If they were to lose, big if, it would be very detrimental to their coaching futures. In 2009, ECU curb stomped App in the first half. Holtz took his foot off the gas and Cadet was able to breathe some life into an otherwise stagnant offense and the Pirates were unable to just turn "it" back on when needed. ASU had all the momentum and no time left. Last year Beamer had the team beat down and continued the onslaught to leave no doubt. I don't see Ruff making the same mistake as Holtz if his Pirates get up big early. I believe it's imperative that App comes out with guns blazing in order to stay in the game. Gaining confidence throughout the game is a key factor for FCS teams to hang with FBS programs and this is done through proper execution. Know your role and play fast Mountaineers!

This! It worked in Ann Arbor.

Bulletin board material from their fans:

-This will be over by halftime.
-We’re (Pirates) in a completely different league.
-They’re (App) not as good this year as last year.
-They’re (App) a pretty good 5A high school.
-No faith, we could line up and play them anywhere.
-We have more quality players than they do.
-We are more athletic, faster, bigger and stronger than App. I wouldn’t have said last year that App would be an easy win at all, but this year...I expect a dominating performance.
-We weren’t actually close to them physically. We dominated that game in the first half and clearly were the more talented team.
-There is much bigger gap between ECU-App than ECU-USC.
-This will be like App’s game against VT last year when they lost by 53.
-App scored 10 TD’s in their scrimmage…but remember that was against a defense much inferior than ours (Pirates). We will win this one pretty good.
-We (ECU) should win this game easily and that is what I expect considering the opponent.
-We (ECU) should dominate them upfront.
-We (ECU) are superior to App in every way possible…it should be a beating!
-Appy will have the sore ride home.
-App flat out doesn't have the caliber S&C coach that we have, or the caliber of athlete we have... they won't be able to handle the humidity in Greenville as well as our boys can.

Can someone please pass this along to the coaches and players?

That last one made me chuckle. IIRC, our guys weren't nearly as gassed in the second half as the ECU guys were last time. At Football 101, we got a tour and demo of S&C - quite impressive. We even have hand-me-down battle ropes given by the Oakland Raiders now. There's tons of focus on core strength and not just muscle building.

Yes their fans have short memories of which team was cramping up. The Pirates do have a new S&C coach just like App does so hopefully Kareem has our guys on a similar program to what both Kent and Dillman were doing here...FINISH STRONG!!!

The funniest one to me was how the gap is larger between ECU-ASU than there is between ECU-USCocks. The SEC is far superior to CUSA and I think ASU could win a couple of games right now against CUSA teams and would probably finish middle of the pack with more schollies.

We've got them where we want them. If they think our guys haven't taken the C-USA snub as a kick in the nuts, they've got 60 minutes of APPsolute hell coming their way, and they better hope that their conditioning is better than ours. They didn't take their foot off the gas in 2009, they were just pumping the pedal in hopes they had enough to get to the station. They made it on fumes.

You looking for someone to come over and talk smack? Ok sounds good. You think we don't remember the absolute embarrassment that was almost losing to your little 5A team? Trust me we all do. We know you're going to show up fired up and ready to go, and we're going to be just as fired up to prove that 09 was a fluke. I hope all of you who come have a great time and are treated well, right up until gametime where I hope you are completely miserable and and leave in disgust around the middle of the 3rd quarter.

I guess talking down to us eases the insecurity caused by going 0 for 72 on trying to beg your way into the Big East. We'll be there on 9/1, in the black helmets with the Block A on the side. You'll know we've been there.

Hell at least we were begging AQ leagues. You were begging C-USA and they preferred to invite a team that doesn't even have a football team over you. Pot calling kettle black? I'd pick a better line of return smack than "hey the Big East turned you down." You couldn't even get in the Suck-Belt.

I know you're just providing some pre-game smack talk but I do have a serious question for you, since I have talked to many ECU fans who are expecting nothing short of a blowout. Do y'all expect this year's ECU squad to be significantly better than the '09 version or do you feel that App has fallen off a good bit since then? We had a down year in 2011 but then again, so did ECU and unless it has been decided recently, we don't even know who will be starting at QB for ECU in the opener.

I think App will have to execute very, very sharply to pull off the upset but I am expecting a competitive game.

Yes it actually feels as if football season has commenced. BJ I'll give you that one so ECU leads 1-0 but let me add a caveat to what you've said. ASU was turned down for the same reason as ECU for BE, lack of market. Nevermind the tradition and attendance of our respective programs. Shouldn't that say more about your conference that you'd let in a FCS start-up over a proven program? I'm not a UNCC hater like many in our fanbase because anyone who's watched the plight of ECU trying to get into the BE should have seen the writing on the wall (location, location, location). Hopefully in the next round of shake ups, App will find itself in FBS and maybe one day we'll get you guys up the mountain.

Now to tie this smack talk up, since 2008 ASU has had more players drafted (7) than ECU (6).
