I think postseason rankings are a pretty good measure of a program's success, especially over the long term. Obviously they're subjective, but they're also more significant on a national scale than, say, winning the Sun Belt title IMO. Would love to get there soon.

I don't think we'll end up ranked but it doesn't hurt in the slightest to beat that drum. We have to make noise when we can, even if it ruffles some feathers on Tobacco Road.

They make a whole lot more sense than the pre-season rankings. Other than that, bragging rights.

I would hope a recruit would not change his mind about attending App State because we finished 38th instead of 32nd. Especially considering the national signing day is less than a month from when the final rankings are released.

In your example sure, no difference between 38th and 32nd. But, if you got a #25 or #22 next to your School, it sure as heck means something. Moreso than a passing mention in the fine print.

Exactly. And it's less about the class who'll be signing a month from now than about what the coaches will be able to pitch to recruits over the summer and beyond.

Coaches use any and every angle to differentiate their programs in recruiting. You can bet a top 25 ranking would do that compared to nearly every school we're recruiting against.

And unfortunately the final rankings always have a lot to do with the pre-season and early seasons rankings the next year. Start high and you get a little leeway for that first or second loss. Ole Miss was ranked most of the year and look at their record....just that they started high and of course lost to some good programs. Start out of the top 20 and they never get ranked regardless of their schedule. If App is getting votes in the preseason it's a good bet that if they knock off UGA they will be ranked the next week; maybe not if they're not on the early radar.

I am not questioning what App State values in the final rankings, more so questioning the importance and relevance as a whole. I think it is more so still done today, because it was done in the past. Prior to BCS, final ranking crowned the national champion (I strongly believe) and I just think it is something that they just continue to do. I do not fault any school for using this as a recruiting pitch, but I don't understand why we still have it today.

I also don't understand Pre-season rankings, the targeting rule, why NFL gives pass interference spot fouls, any much much more. I guess this is just another thing to add to the list.

It's as important or unimportant as one makes it, I suppose. If the rankings were just to crown a national champion, then teams 2-25 were unimportant all along, right?

It's just another way to measure success. Probably holds a little more prestige in CFP, where still only the top four teams make the playoff. So whereas teams in other spots might boast of, say, a Sweet 16 appearance, in football, you can say you finished in the top 10, top 25 or whatever.

To me, one of the most amazing sports accomplishments of my lifetime is Florida State finishing in the top five 14 straight seasons from 1987-2000.

QueencityApp wrote:We should not be ranked. We won all the games this year we were supposed to win. This is why OOC games are going to be so important year in and year out as we play in a notoriously weak conference. We stepped it up this year but we will get no respect until we start knocking out P5 opponents.

I saw the Twitter/Instagram post earlier this week comparing the in state schools (Carolina, NC State, Wake, etc) against our record this year. I really wish we would stop doing that as everyone knows good and well we are at the top by numbers only and you get comments from people outside the program stating "got waxed by Miami on their own field" or "play in the ACC and see what your record would be" blah blah. It's pointless, no reason to beat our chest when you look at the 10-3 record and see what opponents we beat. Start next year with beating Wake, playing Georgia tough and bulldozing the rest of the schedule. Build off years like that and people will start to take notice.
And on the flipside of this, everyone That I showed this pic to was shocked that APP had the best football record in the state, and that's when I told all of them that it was the second year in a row. Any publicity while our program is on a high only helps raise people's awareness to app state football regardless of who we play. A few years of this and these same people who did not know we had the best record in the state will suddenly turn to " Of course I knew you guys had a great program, Ya'll been doing that for years!"

Yup. Best time of the year to be ranked, IMO, as far as practical advantages.

Probably end up somewhere in the high 30's. Might crack the top 25 if we can beat Georgia out of the bat but not sure.

For the final poll....I think we are very worthy of jumping a few spots from 33. But 25 spot is very arguably a push.

Between the 26 and 30 spot would be fine with me and we are DEFINITELY APPSOLUTELY worthy of the 30 spot IMO.
KICK ASS!!!
