I think the jabs are pretty old as well and you could really say the docksider thing for pretty much every fan base. But I think the larger point is their home crowds, no matter the sport, just aren't that good. Roy complained this year that the Dean Dome is quiet unless Duke is there. And we all know about the emptiness of Kenan on Saturdays. Overall just not really a great fan base.

The problem with the Dean Dome isn't as much the fan base as it is the seating arrangement (big donors in the prime seats instead of students). Kenan is a different story, it's never been the rowdiest but they did at least have good crowds when Butch Davis was there. Then the NCAA problems hit and they've never really recovered in terms of fan interest, even though Fedora has arguably done better there than Davis did.

I don't see that happening at UNCheat.
You'll be fine. It's Carolina, not ISIS. Besides, Kenan is rarely the most hostile environment anyway.
Unless you're a lactose intolerant recovering alcoholic. The wine and cheese crowd can be very scary for that person.
I've been to the Dean Dome twice to watch us play the Tar Heels and their fans treated us fine and we were all decked out in black and gold...even on the shuttle ride in from the parking area. Now they were lopsided victories for them so they may have behaved differently if we had won. I was careful not to spill anything on their docksiders though...that might piss them off.
I went to a Duke/UNC game at the Dean Dome wearing a Duke shirt and shouted pro-Duke stuff the whole time. One guy called me an ass hole. Nothing major happened.

These are the type who silently judge you for not attending the University of North Carolina, not the type that tip over a portajon at 8:30 am on game day like they do at ECU. I've never heard of anyone having a violent experience with a UNC fan at one of their games, and I know a ton of NC State grads.

My older brother is a UNC grad and when he heard they were likely playing App in Football he wasn't too thrilled. His comment was that he was glad the game wasn't this coming season as he would expect App to kick them aside. It will be fun for us to attend the games together, especially if App wins.

My family is mostly App and UNC grads. I texted my sister and brother in law about the game. My sister's response was brief, and my brother in-law did not respond at all. My wife is excited, but mostly about the tailgating potential. It will be a fun series in our family.

I have attended numerous games at Kenan and the DeanDome over the years and I have really never seen any big problems. I still say they have the worst fans in the country but not because of their actions toward their opponents - (Unlike GaSo where I have been once and will never go back) - No, the Carolina fans are the worst because they turn on their own players and coaches, they leave when the team gets behind, they want Roy fired every time he loses to Duke, they don't support their team thru thick and thin, and honestly, most don't really know the rules of the sport they watch - There has NEVER been a foul committed by a hole player at the dome - NEVER --- they boo the refs even when their team commits intentional fouls --- One quick example, I was at a game, don't even remember who they were playing - Any way the opponent drove to the basket and made the shot - a foul was called on unc and the guy next to me went nuts, screaming at the ref, etc., As it was, the foul occurred before the shot so the basket didn't count and the opponent just got the ball out of bounds. I said to the guy, "You do realize if the ref hadn't blown his whistle the other team would now have 2 more points?" - he replied with, I don't give a damn, that was a terrible call --- :? :? :?

UNC fans are cordial. It is almost like going to a home game with far more opposing fans.

I've been to several games at Kenan as an NC State fan and never felt threatened, but that is more likely because there were more NC State fans there than UNC fans.

Kind of sounds like us when a penalty is called in football. Most fans don't believe their teams commit fouls or penalties. Doesn't matter the school or the sport. I hear a lot of foul stuff in the stadium when the penalty is on App. We don't object in basketball since no one is at our games to complain.

There are a lot of generalizations in this statement. Every fan base out there has this element. Do you remember the fire Satt group half way through his second season? There is a guy that sits behind me at KBS. Sounds a lot like the guy you described in Chapel Hill. I'm not defending their fans, I just don't think they should be judged as a whole based on a few experiences.

I assume you're talking about football. That has definitely been an issue in the past but has been improving recently (coinciding with the recent success under Fedora). Also, show me one fan base where, when their team are getting beaten soundly, their fans stick around.

Let him who is w/out sin cast the first stone. I seem to remember plenty of games last year where the stands at Kidd Brewer were embarrassingly empty. Also, have you ever tuned into an App bball game? We average all of like 500 fans per game. Our only fans are seats...

Again, I agree with you in FB, but that's just not true in Bball. The main problem is the seating formation in the Dean Dome. They have the majority of the students behind one basket and not along the side of the court like they are in, say, Cameron indoor. Since Roy made that comment you alluded to, the (older, season ticket holder) fans have really answered the call, becoming much louder and more involved.

To East and Doggys point, you guys are right: the seating arrangement is the problem. Nonetheless, it's a problem. And it's a problem they can't really fix either. Now, none of that is to say the crowd in the Dean Dome is *bad* in anyway at all, I would love for Holmes to be 1/4th of that, but it could be better. And that's why you get labeled the wine and cheese crowd, fair or not.

The "wine and cheese" thing comes from football too. The only Carolina grads I know who actually attend football games post pictures of their tailgate: folks standing around a single picnic table wearing argyle and drinking wine. There's even a Chihuahua with a blue argyle sweater of his own.

I'm sorry for ruining dinner if you're reading this around supper time.

These might be generalizations for you but I have attended well over 50 sporting events at unc for at least 40 years including games at Carmichael (which really was a home court advantage) --- my opinion isn't based on a couple of games and it would take numerous pages to tell all the stories - but you are most certainly entitled to your opinions ---

If those were not generalizations, then you are claiming that in your 40 years of UNC games, every single fan you've encountered fits your description. I find that hard to believe. Not all UNC fans behave in this fashion.
