Hypothetical 64 Team FB Playoff
About as hypothetical as things come. Still, the likes of ESPN don't think we even warrant playoff consideration (or really any G5 outside Houston, SDSU, and Boise) even if it were an expanded 64 team field. Heres to hoping we take care of business against a P5 next year.

The P5 is a line of products created by ESPN. They would be making foolish business decisions if they didn't tout the P5 as that much better than the G5 as it would cannibalize their own product.

For sure. Got to try to maintain the value for all of the TV rights they overpaid for, while thinking they could never lose subscribers.ericsaid wrote:The P5 is a line of products created by ESPN. It's just a way for one of their CFB writers to generate filler content in the offseason. He's plucking straight from their FPI rankings, so blame a computer, not their business interests. However, we did finish last season #54 in the FPI, so in reality we would have made such a field if that were the criterion.

You don't think that their computer model has any calculations that skew their ranking more to the P5? The fact that Texas received a six seed based on the FPI is laughable and shows that there is likely an inherent bias in their calculations.EastHallApp wrote:It's just a way for one of their CFB writers to generate filler content in the offseason. Their business interests are directly tied to the information that they espouse even if that information is a so called non-biased poll. The fact of the matter is that ESPN and Disney has a lot of money tied up in really what is a brand within a brand and that is the Power 5; it is a term that ESPN used to juxtapose the superiority of conferences based on ROI, instead of by the 10 or 15 schools that actually support the 65 schools in those conference, instead of actual competition. In doing so, they can drive down their own costs in broadcasting the G5 by offering them less money, and focus their reporting on fewer schools making it more in depth and seemingly more attractive to the consumer.
The fun part of it is that you see games where App takes Tennessee to overtime, Southern Miss beat Kentucky, CMU beats Oklahoma State, Troy takes the eventual National Champion to the wire, etc. The divide in competition is a manufactured perception, not reality and this type of poll is a microcosm of that.
