To be clear, I'm in favor of retiring 14. Just presenting the "legacy jersey" idea as a possible alternative.

What I was saying above was that it's true that, under that scenario, no one would give the number to a freshman. It's a special number at App *because* of what Armanti and Marcus did. So if it were honored in that way, then it would go to someone new every year or two. Or some years, maybe no one would wear it.

And yes it would likely be only skill players. I'm fine with that. Though technically there's nothing stopping an OL or any other player from wearing whatever number they want in college.

I'm pretty sure Interior Offensive Linemen must wear numbers 50-79 ---

How do we justify retiring it for the best QB ever, but not the best RB ever especially when Settle has his numbered retired? At this point I think the Legacy number is our best option.

Fairly or unfairly, I get the impression that NFL success has played a significant role in which players get their numbers retired at App.

Earlier I said - retire it honoring both Armanti and Marcus ---

As I've read through this thread, one thought keeps running through my mind. I don't really care who wears #14 or if anyone ever wears #14 again at App. What matters to me is that every player wearing App black and gold is of sound character and solid work ethic, that every player is someone I'm proud to have in my App family. The number on the back of the jersey means nothing to me other than in identifying the player at a distance during the game. The man inside the jersey, however, means everything.
