Backup QB

Unread post by AppAlum12 » Fri Aug 25, 2017 9:22 am

Went to the IMG Sponsors event last night at The Rock and Coach Satterfield spoke for a few minutes about the team. He took a few questions and I asked him how the backup QB situation was looking. He said they have charted every throw from each QB throughout the entire fall camp. To this point Lamb, Thomas, and Huesman are all completing 63% of their passes. Thomas and Huesman have been in a neck and neck battle all camp, but that Thomas has been significantly better at taking care of the football and is the backup QB right now. He did say he wants to get both of them game reps during the season and that they will continue to compete. Also, it sounds like Derrick will be redshirting. Not a huge surprise there. Going to be interesting to see who the eventual successor to #11 is!

Here's hoping App doesn't really need the backup QB except for mop up time with App up by 20!

Keeping in mind our #2 QB this season is most likely our starter next year, what does anyone on this board know about Thomas regarding his strengths, etc. I would like some more insights into his style and capabilities from some with more knowledge of the facts.

Also, as has been said in other threads, if he does continue to progress as #2, he will need to get playing time this season. Sounds like Satt eluded to that in his sound bites. We will likely see more #2 in games this year for that reason.

I watched one practice/scrimmage last week. My takeaway (admittedly from a limited perspective): Both Thomas and Heusman are capable of leading us to a Sun Belt championship this season. Lamb, because he's put together three superb seasons, is our unquestioned incumbent. But if all three were freshmen, I'm not sure Lamb would win the starting job. Thomas most impressed me with his ability to go quickly and confidently through his progressions. Our backup QB job is in good hands, be it Thomas or Huesman.

I think overall Thomas is more like Lamb with a little stronger arm but faster foot speed (a mid 4.5 guy) a good step faster than Taylor. Huesman probably has the best arm of all three. He is also the taller of the three. He is also slower of foot than the other two. Without having seen them in a college game yet, I would feel pretty comfortable with either of them in a game. I think presently Thomas is making fewer mistakes. He also looks a lot like Taylor except faster.

I hope we don't see either of them at UGA, but see a quarter each from them vs. SSU.

We've had some great players during this transition period and have accomplished more than I ever dreamed. Their success has given the program an opportunity to recruit an even high level of talent which we'll see on the field the next 2-3 years. We can't say enough good things about what type of foundation the classes of Cox, Lamb, etc. have laid for this program.

That seems to be the general scouting report - Thomas is more of a dual threat, Huesman has the bigger arm. Derrick sounds like a Lamb-type player but a bit faster.

Haven't gotten a good feel from practice or scouting reports as to Thomas' arm strength. If he's limited to mop-up duty, we probably won't get to find out in games either.

Honestly a bit surprised as it sounded like Huesman was the favorite after spring. Thomas must have really come on in camp.

As for next year, I think Stephon Brown might be the most physically gifted of them all, and he's planning to enroll early. But of course QB is a tough spot to start a true freshman.

I think the starter next year is still very much up in the air. Obviously, whoever is the backup this year will have a small leg up theoretically, but I anticipate it being a wide open competition next spring, summer, and fall camp. It's interesting to look at the recruiting rankings of the four guys who will most likely compete for it.

Jacob Huesman (RSo.) - 2 Star .7716 128th Pro QB
Zac Thomas (RSo.) - 2 Star .7843 59th Dual QB
Peyton Derrick (RFr.) - 2 Star .7783 68th Dual QB
Stephon Brown (Fr.) - 3 Star .8199 43rd Dual QB

Not sure if Brown is planning on being an EE, but if he is I'd say he has a legitmate shot at making a run at it. Assuming we hold off the other schools that have/will offer him before signing day.

I hope we see them both at UGA, but for different reasons than what you mean.

the only way we see them at UGA is if Taylor goes down or we are getting pummeled - don't want either of those ---

Even if we have a nice lead on them I don't think we see a freshman QB unless they take a knee - just trying to be realistic ---

I don't think NattyBumpo was trying to be realistic, just having a sense of humor.

This a place for being rational and serious. Otherwise we might jinx things. You know, we affect game outcomes through this message board.

Well that's just ridiculous...the idea that a message board post could impact the game. Everyone knows that the outcome of the game is determined by the players, coaches, and my own strict adherence to game day rituals including never shaving on game day and wearing the appropriate game day cap/shirt. :D

Not to mention getting the same thing from concessions at the same time in the game.

If he plans on being an early enrollee other teams won't have time to make a late run.

They can, just not quite as late. We lost an early-enrollee QB in December just a couple years ago.
