Devastated?

Unread post by firemoose » Mon Sep 25, 2017 4:05 pm

I've seen this and other like terms thrown around on the boards ever since I got back on Sat. Did anyone read the post I put up before I left or know where I've been for the past 2+ weeks? Think south. Think wet and very windy. Same types of places I've been since 89' when most of those big groups of spinning clouds with the dot in the middle decide to come calling. And other wonderful disasters, big and small as well. Devastated? Disappointing sure but devastating? Over a game? Give me a break. Those of us as ERT team members, local first responders, and other volunteers from all over have a term we use for this. We say that these people are dealing with their First World Problems.

Many fine men and women travel many hundreds of miles to be in place before, during, and after the "predictable" events, and during or after those that aren't, just to help people in times of greatest need. And see things most can't even imagine. People who have lost everything they had and still have a smile and a thank you for those who are trying to help. And this is in a country that has tons of resources to send into areas that need the help. Think about those in other places affected by the same storms or other natural events. Many of the central/northern Caribbean Islands are completed wiped out. Most on them have lost everything. People have died and more will die in the months ahead due to diseases brought on by lack of food, shelter, and most things associated with everyday life.

Many places in these islands will not have power restored for 6 or more MONTHS. And years before they can rebuild for those that actually can. Every place still standing that can provide any shelter at all is full of the homeless and sick. Think this isn't correct then look at Haiti. While it wasn't a hurricane that wiped them out it's been 7 YEARS since the earthquake and more people than you can count are still living in tents. This is what is ahead for those in the islands.

I know that we've had offers go out and two commits. I haven't bothered doing anything about it yet because I'm still getting back into my life after where I've been. Plus I have some very hard decisions to make myself for the future on here. And my issues are PETTY compared to the many things I've seen over all these years of storms, quakes, tornadoes, fires, etc. But please think about all the people that are suffering right now, have suffered and lost in the past, and will be suffering for months and years to come before throwing around words like Devastated when talking about a football game.

All my thoughts and prayers go out to all those I've met and the many more that I haven't as they try to find something close to a normal life again. God Bless them all.

Yep, it's important to keep things in perspective. I can't even imagine what they're going through. Thanks for what you're doing, on the BGP podcast they mentioned a former App women's basketball player from the Virgin Islands was totally wiped out and she's got like 3 or 4 kids. There's a donation thing set up for her on the BGP Facebook page and they're asking for small donations that will go to her to rebuild her life, there's a matching thing someone's got in place so your $10 becomes $20. Please go check it out.

Well said Moose, and we'll done!

Yes, some people go way over the top and act like real crybabies when we don't win. Saturday's result was a gut punch for sure, and I was as disappointed as anyone else. But with the benefit of a couple of healing days, I can realize it was a great game, an incredible atmosphere and we went toe to toe with a good ACC team and for the most part, outplayed them. I also realize now that I had a GREAT time.

I'm also so thankful that the loss was the worst thing that has happened to me this week (even counting the fact that my iMac went teats up Thursday)

isn't this a college football message board? Give your fellow fans more credit. I don't think anyone thinks this is the most important thing going. Find a post about football loss on a hurricane relief board and post your santamonious..., there. I'm just assuming App grads know the difference.

Thank you Moose! As a resident of Florida, we have been blessed to have so many linesman and firsts responder down here to help restore normalcy. It has been a painstakingly slow process for some. You are appreciated.

Moose, you are appreciated so much by this first responder. I have 30 years in that includes fire, EMS and rescue. Seen much destruction and heartbreak but nothing like the devastation that you describe. Prayers and a small donation are being sent. This game and recruiting are pale in the scheme of things. Thank you for everything you do!

I think that you meant "sanctimonious". If you're going to rant and question intellect, it would be advantageous to spell check.

I know something about devastation. It hit my family about a year ago. I also know the difference between that and football game.

Yep Bio - many of us have experienced some bad times lately --- and that isn't even taking into consideration a "finger-push" away from a nuclear war ---

Hopefully you and your family are well on your way to recovery. I know people in areas I went to 10+ years ago that are still dealing with issues and trying to recover. And those who never will.

Thanks. Believe me I got yanked into reality PDQ. Then reality kicked us in the teeth a few more times. We got a long way to go and it's a daily struggle but we are going to make it. I have found that there are a lot of good people in the world despite the hate that we see on a daily basis recently. Another prayer would not hurt if you have a minute.
