I think the penalties were a direct result in the different styles between the Sunbelt and the Big 10. The Big 10 fans told us up front that the refs don't call holding easily up there (unless they're playing Ohio State ...sound familiar?). Conversely, they Big 10 has no Triple option or Spread option teams. I prefer to believe that they weren't intentionally making bad calls. They were just seeing a style they weren't used to seeing and didn't know how to call it. I do think they made some bad calls.

Now...the "unsportsmanlike" call on the first series that kept the Penn State drive alive....that was BS. Technically it was there, but it was so ticky tack that it just seems ridiculous to call.
I made this comment too, I would love to have been a fly on the wall for the pregame officials meeting, I have no doubt TO style of play and chop blocking were points of focus.

Perhaps, but it was early and no doubt the officials weren't going to tolerate it. Frankly, there's no place for that kind of display. Hopefully, he's learned a lesson.
Can't disagree with that. It was pretty minor but the infraction was there.

Reverse the teams on that play and I bet the Penn St player would have only gotten a verbal warning from the ref at the most.

Thank you Chillisquaque1245. We enjoyed the game day experience at Penn State and met some good people/football fans up there. I have always respected the program and wanted to go to a game there. I hope you all win your conference and have a great year.
It's great to be a Mountaineer!!

Hey we're getting off subject...

The PSU guys could have easily come on here and started talking crap, and making excuses like they were too focused on the Pitt game, they lost a bunch of starters, we didn't play them at their normal speed, etc. But they're being congratulatory and showing a little humility and respect towards our program.

Enjoy it. And save all the negativity for the Niners next week ;)

as a fan of college football i have been to many app state games. it is quite the atmosphere at the rock. i believe the penaltiese we a little one sided but app never gave up. i was extremely pleased with our young qb and when he whent out for a play his replacement threw a great strike down the left side,.....penn state will have a good year as i think the mountaineers will also........GREAT COLLEGE GAME TO WATCH....... CANT WAIT FOR NEXT GAME.....

Before, during, and after the game, our experience in State College, and at Beaver Stadium and all the tailgate areas was amazing. Not one negative comment. No condescending remarks before or after. I’ve never been able to bear to watch the Tennesse replay. Just too unbearable. But I will proudly watch our gritty, gutsy game against a great Penn State team. It’s Great to be a Mountaineer.

I said this on the Penn State board and I would like to repeat it here. I kind of think that it is a little bit insulting to your team to keep saying that they are gritty or gutsy. Not that they aren't gritty and gutsy but it is a big mistake to think that that's all that your Mountaineers are. Your team is talented, skilled and well coached. In a similar vein I think that the announcers do App State a big disservice by continually bringing up the Michigan game from 2007. Your team is not some little feel good story that should be patted on the head and complimented on holding their own and staying on the field with a higher ranked team. App State players and coaches should be complimented on their very real excellent play in this year's Penn State game. A writer from Penn Live said that nobody wants to schedule Appalachian State because you don't know how to give up.....that's silly....to generalize about a team because of an upset that was 11 years ago....I don't even know what that means really....do coaches try to schedule teams that "know when to give up"?

How about we just say that Appalachian State came into Happy Valley and gave Penn State all that they could handle? It wasn't because of some ghost of a team from over a decade ago and it wasn't because the Mountaineers are some little engine that could feel good story team of human interest stories. Appalachian State is a good team that played well and while it would have been an upset had the score gone the other way it isn't like USA hockey vs the Russians in the 1980 Olympic games.

Thanks for the game this past Saturday, I can't say it was fun the entire time from this fan's viewpoint but I it was a great game from a college football fan viewpoint.

I'm glad that most of you had a good time in State College and I hope that you were treated well. Best of luck on the rest of the season

PSU_QBKeeper, that was one of the classiest posts I have ever read on this message board. Good luck the rest of the way...

Couldnt have said it better. We stayed in an INN in Hublesburg and had a great time...enjoyed the tailgating in the middle of PSU fans. Talked to Ryan Bates' (PSU lefttackle) parents in the Creamery Sunday. He loved our QB.

"Penn State was holding all day and it was never called."

Welcome to the Big Ten where holding never gets called.
That was my biggest gripe. Game was too close for the calls to be only one way. I officiated sports for a few years and give most officials the benefit of the doubt, but a game must be called evenly. If you are going to call it tight, it has to be tight all around. If you are going to swallow your whistle, you need to on both sides. I thought the first two penalties on us were ticky tack (especially after watching LSU players repeatedly do the same motion as they wrecked Miami with not one “Taunting” penalty) as well as the minimal hand fighting by Duck that led to PI...... it is ok to call those, as long as you call it the other way. There were many blatant holds from PSUs line that Stevie Wonder would have trouble not seeing and a few times PSU defenders arrived too early that could’ve been called PI. If it’s not balanced in a close game like that, officiating becomes a crucial factor. No one wants that.....

Yep...The owner (Andy a woman) was a very gracious host. We rented all 7 rooms. Food was excellent. The fastest Amish buggy I've ever seen blew by the Inn Sunday. We went to Gettysburg Friday...a lot of NC men died there...pretty incredible park. Went to the Big Springs Spirits in Bellefonte Sunday. Flew outta Harrisburg Monday.
