Short week, and we have had plenty of distractions (top 25 ranking, numerous newspaper stories, worrying about our coach leaving, etc.).
Rain (which generally can disrupt a passing game-noted the number of passes that slipped or tipped through hands and were intercepted).
Rivalry, and going up against coaches that know us pretty well and how we plan for games.
I also think we need to be a little critical of the coaching staff. We seemed overly hyped and let GS get into our heads. Turnovers and penalties can be a product of lack of focus (although I think the loud stadium and weather also helped with this). I don't think we did much with the game plan (maybe because of the rain) but once we got down by two scores I figured it was going to be hard to come back (especially with the rain and QB out).
The last two games may be enough to humble us back to reality. It appears we weren't as good as most thought, and this is compounded by injuries and ejections to key players.
I've said this before, GS has always had good athletes. Now they have some good coaches. With the right leadership it doesn't take much to right the ship. They are definitely a different animal from years past.
Maybe we can get back to not worrying about where we will be coaching at next year, not being ranked and all the exposure, and start back playing some App State Football.

Re: Perfect storm
We need some help (I'm looking at you Troy) but we are not eliminated from the SBC East and still own the tie breaker over at least 2 SBC West teams if it comes to that. So we could still host the SBC Championship game and win the damn thing. All I know is that next weekend me and my family will be at the Coastal game wearing our Black & Gold and will be very loud and proud!

That's what concerns me; we have not been moving forward this season. We have regressed from the Penn State game. I know Zach was out last night and that affected the offense, but we have not looked sharp with everybody healthy, and the playbook from Penn State seems to have been lost somewhere between State College and Boone.hapapp wrote: ↑Fri Oct 26, 2018 8:41 amThat about sums it up. Reminds me of last season's mid-season slump. Then we came out of that guns a blazing. I just hope the slump is over now.

Re: Perfect storm
I'm just disappointed that we didn't match their intensity. I mean they cheap shot your quarterback to the point of knocking him out of the game and you have no reaction to it. Sometimes I think Satterfield is too laid back on the sideline and the team follows his lead. As for showing new offensive wrinkles in this game, I'm pretty much convinced we didn't have any with or without Zac. Just my 2 cents.

I really believe this team will respond to this. With that being said they are very very young. But what I saw last night is a little disturbing. No rub routes, no dig routes across the middle. No wheel routes. GS was leaving the middle open all night long, instead the shots were going deep. You always have a plan and know what your next QB can and cant do. Yes ASU lost, yes they dropped passes. Yes ASU had turnovers. But Coach said it in his interview. They have to give the players the chance to make plays. What I saw last night was when ZT went down ASU tried to continue to call plays as if ZT was still in the game. Wont work, wont work even at Alabama. This may have been a new learning experience for this staff. See you in Conway this Saturday.

Not only has the playbook lost about 5 pages, some of the discipline issues that have previously been a problem in Satterfield coached teams have emerged.appst89 wrote: ↑Fri Oct 26, 2018 8:54 amThat's what concerns me; we have not been moving forward this season. Does it really only take slight adversity for these guys to revert to pre-game fighting, in game head shots and a season high penalty total? The fact that we let GS get in our heads is pathetic. They may have won that game before kickoff and that falls on the coaches.

In the chat room I said this twice for the Ref to keep his hands off our D players.appstatealum wrote: ↑Fri Oct 26, 2018 7:51 am
4. This one is more subtle, and may indicate what App was against all night. Every time our defense made a big play, the officials immediately ran over and would put their hands on our player's telling them to calm down. GS could not have been more obnoxious and I never saw the officials "calm the down".
Ive never believed in people being on the take... But I absolutely know officials can do subtle things to influence momentum in a game.

My wife was going ballistic over this. She pointed it out when it first started happening and I started paying close attention to it. These are subtle ways to influence a game. As an official, it is so critical to be “unseen” and let the game flow as much as possible. I run a big men’s basketball league and even though I have rules against taunting, cursing and physical confrontations, I also ask that the refs use judgement with these so as not to influence the momentum of one team or another. They are competitors and some things are thoughtless innate reaction. Officiating is extremely difficult, but there are differences in missing calls and what I saw last night.GreatAppSt wrote: ↑Fri Oct 26, 2018 10:02 amIn the chat room I said this twice for the Ref to keep his hands off our D players.appstatealum wrote: ↑Fri Oct 26, 2018 7:51 am

That's BS. He planted his face mask in the guys chest. If you called targeting every time someone leaves there feet to make a tackle, games would end with 3rd stringers playing the game. It was a very bad call.App91 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 25, 2018 10:04 pmNope good call the fact that he left his feet and launched is the basic tenant of targeting. Re: Perfect storm
This. QB left his feet, defender leaves his feet. Fehr did exactly what he was supposed to do. If Werts tucks, tackle is solid and ideal versus upending the QB from below. If Werts holds the ball a split second longer in the air, Fehr bats it down. This was a perfect football play made by Fehr within the context of the play. If Fehr was late and launched after Werts completes his motion (the throw and lands both feet on the ground) then it is absolutely a roughing call. I understand an official throwing the flag to initiate a discussion, but it should’ve been picked up after a simple analysis of the bang bang play. What is even worse is they did not even discuss the Duck interference on the punt. That’s poor officiating, no excuse for it. No “well those are the rules whether you like it or not”. Those are not the rules. Did it cost us the game? Who knows.... starting LB goes out against a Triple O and a critical turnover right outside our red zone. GS may still have won, but I would definitely have appreciated those two factors back...AppScott89 wrote: ↑Fri Oct 26, 2018 10:32 amThat's BS. He planted his face mask in the guys chest. Re: Perfect storm
The Duck muffed/interfered with punt fumble occurred after we had just had a great defensive stop after just tying the game. GSU gets the ball on the 10 and scores a touchdown...that's a huge momentum change in the 2nd quarter.
