No, Georgia Southern's gym does not compare to Varsity nor the HCC. GSU' gym has 20 foot walls behind the baskets. Varsity had bleachers right behind both baskets, the pep ban on one end and mostly football players and other athletes traditionally sat behind the other basket. They could be pretty raucous. I'm sure the HCC will develop an atmosphere and yes, it will take a winning product on the court to help that occur. Just win, baby. The atmosphere will take care of itself.

Great find! Loved Varsity Gym. It looks funny back then having the side courts showing. You don't see that now a days.
I went to see Little River Band, Pablo Cruise, and Atlanta Rhythm Section there also back in the days...
Baseball practice in cages used to be upstairs on the balcony too.

Just wonder if the crowd would be better if the arena was in the middle of campus? Doubt it but just wonder.

I'll stick to my view -- Varsity is/was a dump. Lots of fun and excitement can be had in a dump, but it takes a winning team and a big crowd. I'll take a winning team and a big crowd in HCC over the same in Varsity any day.
To me it's like going back to Bourbon Street in the morning after you had a wild night there. In the daylight when it's mostly empty, you realize that Bourbon Street is nothing special at all -- it's a dump and smells even worse. But at night with thousands of loud rowdy people, music, lights, alcohol, women flashing their boobs, and everybody going nuts, it's a BLAST. And, 30 years later, you won't even remember the morning walk down an unimpressive Bourbon Street, but you will still grin at the thought of that wild night of fun you had on Bourbon Street with your friends.

In the 90's a plan to renovate Varsity would have made it anything but a dump. Too bad the PTB at the time wanted a convocation center. The first one proposed had 12,000 seats and was to be built where the indoor facility and softball stadium are. I remember the tree huggers camping out up there protesting the building.

It seems pointless at this point to relive history. It doesn't change where we are and certainly doesn't mean that someday the HCC won't enjoy some similar crowds from those days. My guess is if a top 20 team rolled into Boone to play in the HCC a good crowd would show up.
