Here's my current feeling: If it is Roof, and it now appears there's a ton of smoke around that fire, then obviously DG and Drink felt he was the best coach for the job. Very few if any of us will know who else was interviewed, and how those coaches performed in said interviews. Anyone can say "it should be Coach ABC or Coach DEF", but no one and I mean NO ONE knows who or why these decisions were made, outside of the decision makers themselves. There's nothing wrong with questioning the decision - that is our right and privilage. However, to judge this hire even before it is officially made shows an incredible amount of closed-mindedness, based on available evidence. If I were to act that way in any other facet of my life, I should be ridiculed.

If App had hired Brian VanGorder (since his wonderful name was brought up previously - god I wish he was still in Statesboro), then I think every single poor word and thought would be warranted. His resume would deserve it. Roof's resume does not. There are valid issues - his perceived limited experience with the defense we currently run, the fact that he hasn't stayed in one place very long - both of those are legit. But let's calm down with the whole sky is falling. It's repetitive and does no good.
Roof left Auburn for UCF right as he was about to be fired. Roof left Georgia Tech for NC State right as he was about to be fired. He ran a 3-4 defense for one season, and then left for Auburn.

The sky isn't falling but it doesn't invalidate the concerns of fans and stake holders about the strongest unit on the team going to a guy who historically has run a Tampa 2 defense. Unless he is Co-DC and App maintains the same defensive philosophy as before, I don't see why this hire was made.

Judging the hire based on his work history is not close mindedness. It is completely valid. Perhaps he comes here and stays for 5 seasons with great success. But 30 years of coaching history suggests otherwise.

It is closed mindedness when you pick and choose which stops you complain about. His Minnesota and PSU defenses each got better than before him-what about that?

Sports are full of coaches excelling in one place and failing in another. Bill Belichick was warmed over trash in Cleveland. Nick Saban had a losing record at the Dolphins. Rich Rodriguez was great at WVU but bad at UM. Point being, it’s easy to look at specific results and form an opinion as to someone’s future performance, but if you don’t look at the whole, you miss the big picture. No one really knows what we will get out of Roof, which is my biggest apprehension at the moment.

Auburn had a month to prepare for Oregon. He will have 6 days or less to prepare for GaSo or any other Belt team.

If you look at the good parts of his resume you also look at the bad. It sounds as though he would have been most of y’alls first choice. Haha

I don't think the continued Ga Tech references are really fair to Roof. Ga Tech is a tough place to recruit to for a variety of reasons and PJ is one of the primary culprits. I guarantee you see a brand new program under Geoff Collins. Watch.

Gotta hand it to him. If he is anything, he is consistent.

But you haven’t defended any of the good and your have cherry picked the bad without doing any sort of enhanced due diligence to ask the questions that would help you to understand why the results were what they were. You just looked at numbers and determined that he was not good enough.

Whoever you wanted does not have the pedigree that Roof has. A Coordinator at an SEC school. A National Championship ring. And decades of coaching experience. Not to mention a stellar reputation among his peers who understand the game and the man more than any of us. Would he be my first choice as DC? He wouldn’t even be on my radar, but he is a solid hire and if it takes you until next December to see it. Then enjoy the ride.

What ringing endorsement have i, or anyone else, given? Those of us not showing up with pitchforks are just keeping a level head and an open mind. There’s more good than bad on his resume no matter how you slice it. I’m sorry you and others have only cherry picked the bad and chosen to run with that as gospel. At this exact moment he’s an objectively good hire for a school like Appalachian State, his success, and any other guy that would’ve been hired for that matter, is TBD.

We are heading east to Raleigh for the weekend to see our oldest son. We are going to the NC State basketball game tonight and will talk with friends to see what they think of our football coaches coming from State. I have always heard good things about them I am pretty sure.

BBQ - Also, will get some of that great Eastern NC BBQ this weekend. As agreed by all on this board Eastern NC BBQ is the best! ;)

Eastern BBQ is terrible. Vinegar does not belong on any food that is good.

There is a lot more going on behind the scenes with hires, players, staff than most of us will ever know. It's easy to say "we should have this, we should have that" when we aren't privy to the same information that DG and Drink are. It can't always be "App Family" guys. I think Roof will be fine, the Tweet from Ethan Joyce about Roof meeting with the writers leads me to believe that he is not a "only my way" type of coach.

The biggest concern any of us should have is how our current players react to the hire. I can tell you now that I know at least one player, who is integral to our defense, that is considering leaving (early... Hint hint) due to this hire. Overreaction, absolutely... But that's what kids do and I hope the current staff is prepared to diffuse.
that would be a horrific mistake on his part lol

At this point this thread has convinced me that Ted Roof is a very good hire. Looking forward to next season.

For the record, my Madden '02 Panthers team ran the 3-4 most often and we were very successful. However, I also threw in some 4-3, as well as some nickel and dime packages, having DB's blitz from different positions. Overall, I think my defense was always ranked in the top 5 in the NFL. So yes, I know what I'm talking about when it comes to defense.
I developed Deshaun Foster into an All time great RB and Hall of famer. Multiple Super Bowl winner...
I think it was Madden ‘04 where I ran Stephen Davis to over 3500 yards in one season. I threw the ball less than 10 times a game and just pounded the rock. If people get pissy about the conservative and predictable play calling at App, they would have spontaneously combusted over mine.
2005 Madden with the Ravens.... All defense and Jamal Williams. I would pepper in Daniel Wilcox for 100+ yards. I was unbeatable in that game. Might throw it 12 times tops.

He has my support until I see a reason not to, but I am disappointed in this hire.

Much more troubling to me is all I'm hearing about unhappy players (and I mean prominent defensive players) ready to leave because of this. I would hope the kids would realize that's not a smart decision, but 18-22 year old kids are not always going to make smart decisions. The X's and the O's may be irrelevant if the Jimmy's and the Joe's aren't there.
They are probably speaking out of loyalty to the old coaches. That’s understandable. But cooler heads will prevail and if they feel that they don’t want to be here anymore, then Godspeed.
I'm hoping for cooler heads.

But I can't help but remember 1988. The '89 team would have been the best in App history at that time, but the attrition because of the coaching change wiped that out.

History doesn't have to repeat itself, but those of us who witnessed that in '89 can't help but be a little leery of it happening again.
We're going to lose some kids when the new semester begins on Monday, Jan. 14 and probably some more after spring practice. Hope it's not like the Sparky Woods to Jerry Moore transition. That involved about 50 total players. Some quit the team/school and went home; some quit the team but stayed in school; some transferred to another institution. Difficult four months for the new staff.
I don’t think it’s going to be extensive unless the kids feel we’ve so vastly changed our philosophies that they no longer fit...or they just don’t jive with the new staff. Keeping Clark, Smith, Watts, etc. will help in stemming that, I think.
I would be shocked out of my gourd if the attrition was more than a handful of kids. Someone may sustain a career-ending injury or someone may lose what he thought was a safe-starting position. Someone else may experience a personality conflict with a new position coach. A few kids may see the handwriting on the wall that their PT is going to be slim or none. The coaches may identify a couple of rules-breakers or a couple of lazy bums and issue them one-way tickets out of the gate.

No way can I imagine anything approaching the Sparky-to-Jerry "evacuation." I could imagine 5% of the roster--five or six kids total.
If it happens to the Apps, it happens to me!

Yes Roof has a national championship ring. He has coached a lot of P5 schools. He has lots of experience. That’s the good.

The bad has been stated and to me outweighs the good. If we have a top 20 defense next year I will eat my crow and be happy doing it. If we suck on D next year and it isn’t due to injuries then I will be calling for his head because it will be his fault. I hope he’s successful because I love my school and I love the kids that play here. That’s who I support anyways.

Go Apps!
