Can who recruit? Roof? I don't think the Coordinators are usually the recruiters. I see DJ Smith on the road today.ericsaid wrote: ↑Fri Jan 11, 2019 9:17 amBut can he recruit? Ethan Joyce, Winston-Salem Journal, has another good App State Football article about 3 of our new football coaches - "App Trail: App State's Ted Roof, Ken Dorsey and Erik Link talk about their new roles."

Surely the coordinators have a part in the overall recruiting strategy.sixtoes9134 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 11, 2019 9:23 amCan who recruit? Roof? I don't think the Coordinators are usually the recruiters. DJ Smith is a good guy to have out on the road. Second or Third best App linebacker in program history, NFL player, got on the field as a rookie before getting hurt, and has now been back at App for quite some time. I would hope he can bring in some players.
I'd like to see what kind of QB Drink can bring in as well because I'm sure that will be a focal point of the recruiting effort for the next couple of weeks. With Dorsey having NFL experience, winning at Natty in college, and coaching "The League" MVP to 55 TD's, along with Drink's QB centric offense, App should have no problem getting a higher caliber QB recruit than in previous years. Not to say that the guy they get will be better than what App has had but Roof got Finley at Boise and then to NC State and recruited four star Rypien to Boise State.

Roof has a ton of connections in GA and the southeast so I hope he is recruiting.sixtoes9134 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 11, 2019 9:23 amCan who recruit? Roof? Multiple and base out of a 3-4. As I said multiple times, it would be a mistake to switch to a base 4 man front so I'm glad to be vindicated by Roof. Having played the NCAA Franchise, it's difficult to switch from a 4-3 to a 3-487ASUgrad wrote: ↑Fri Jan 11, 2019 9:49 amEthan Joyce, Winston-Salem Journal, has another good App State Football article about 3 of our new football coaches - "App Trail: App State's Ted Roof, Ken Dorsey and Erik Link talk about their new roles."

Also, based on his interview, it sounds like he is here for more than just a chance to get back to a P5 school.

Looks solid on the surface. Lots of experience. He coached a fella named Von Miller and a man named Suh.

If anyone had told me in 2014 during the roughest part of our transition that we would have this staff and talent going into 2019, I would have laughed out loud. It absolutely amazes me what has transpired in 5 short years. I can’t even imagine what 2024 has in store. This should be a very fun ride. Here’s to the future! But, step one, beat ETSU! It’s great to be a Mountaineer!

I think it's funny how people were saying Drink isn't a good recruiter. Well he has recruited some BIG TIME coaches to come up the mountain. I am in utter awe of the coaching staff he has put together with the budget he has.

Re: Coach Drink Staff Thread
This is why I asked if we were +/- in regards to our coaching staff, but was unable to adequately get my thoughts from brain to keyboard. I think our coaching staff, on paper, looks like we are light years ahead of the coaching staff from last year. I had posed the question originally because I was scratching my head and wondering how (to quote Dabo) "little old" App State could field a better coaching staff than UL, which has one of the deepest pockets in all of college athletics.

Don’t we have a coach in place now that can talk some sense into Duck. His stock will definitely rise if he stays on board and learns from guys who’ve been there and done that. I’m not sure of his motivating factors. But, long term, he’s missing the boat. Possibly missing a cruise ship. Regardless, best of luck to him if he chooses otherwise. It’s his decision to make.

If he grows a couple of inches over the summer will help his stock too.Apple@chin1 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 11, 2019 1:07 pmDon’t we have a coach in place now that can talk some sense into Duck. Duck probably understands that he is indeed one play away from not ever playing again. He wants to secure the bag now just in case that happens, NFL or college. Can you imagine how it would feel to be in Jalen's position right now?

Another great hire! This staff is really shaping up to be something special. A few years ago, we couldn’t have dreamed of a staff like this. GO APPS!!
