Every good opponent we play is an opportunity to advance the program. Playing Western is a wasted opportunity.
I know some VT and Michigan grads who feel the same way.

I agree from the standpoint that the SB isn't a AQ conference so quality of teams we play does matter.

However I know lots of coaches that say that playing a team you should win against is just as good as playing a teams that make you better. But I know we'll be so much above these low ranked programs like Auburn that it will be out of the question to play WCU.

Like I said earlier, our schedule will be filled with the Ala and Auburn's of the world. And then when we're finished with them we should let them combine and build a super team to take us on.

I was at the WCU vs APP game last year and we were lucky to pull it out. Now I'm sure we'll be better in the FBS, but it will take awhile, so we might need to watch who talk crap about before it comes back to bite us.

And they are right. What good did it do tVtech or UM? They got another home game, and some extra cash. Was it worth it? I guarentee they dont think so.

Auburn has the luxury of being able to schedule whomever they want and still make a great bowl game. We wont have that luxury. Comparing App with an SEC team is ludicrous.

We'll have a schedule full of SB teams, we'll need the BCS and name recognition type games to raise our profile.

When it comes to our "rivalry" with Western Carolina, I say let it go. Western could, and should, start a basketball rivalry with UNC-Asheville, and we should let them go and continue our rivalry with Georgia Southern. Georgia Southern is the only team in the same league as App State now, and although UNCC might have beaten us to the punch by being FBS bound first, they are not going because of their skill, but their market. If Boone had 100,000 people in it, we would have been FBS a while back, but that's besides the point.

Leave WCU. Heck, give them the trophy if they want it, though we have dominated the series since the beginning. We have bigger fish to fry, and wasting one of our OOC games on them would be pointless for us, as many students at App could careless about the Catamounts now. We're likely FBS bound, so let's play some FBS teams. One rivalry I would like to see resume is the App-Wake rivalry. Heck, Wake Forest would need us more now than we need them.

I don't know if you were there, but JJ was taken out and we put in the best we had.

This doesn't make it sound like he was 4th string ..."performed well enough at QB during spring drills to enter the fall in a deadlock with redshirt freshman Kameron Bryant for the top backup position behind starter Jamal Jackson"... :o

If it wasn't for some good running that game might have lasted a little long for APP. IMHO

As bad as this may sound, you can't schedule a rivalry game with a trophy, with an FCS team if you're an FBS team. It's the same reason that ECU would never schedule an East vs. West game with App State as long as we're FCS (not they necessarily would if we were FBS).
The rivalry has been since 1932, the trophy since 1976, I don't think the trophy matters as much as the series does to some. All I'm saying is let's don't think that we're going to go into the FBS and blow everyone away and never look back. It might be good to build in some huge attendance games with low risk.
Where in the world did you get that I was implying that? You may want to continue the series, and that's fine. However, the reality is such that if App State moves to the FBS it will not maintain the series annually and will never travel to Cullowhee. I'm all for playing WCU occasionally if we move to FBS, but not in an annual series.
Maybe this is stirring the pot a little too much, but this parallels our scheduling conversation, so I wanted to raise a question. If it is black and white that you guys would never go back to Cullowhee if App went FBS, then why do you expect a 1 for 1 from Charlotte in order to put them on the schedule? Not trying to anger people, but it's an honest question. I get that Charlotte is brand new to the game, and you all do have a great tradition, but if it's as black and white as insinuated for FCS/FBS, how can you blame Charlotte for our hypothetical game never taking place?
I seriously doubt anyone thinks UNCC would travel to Boone if the 49ers were a full fledge member of FBS and we were still in FCS. Now once we are both FBS or in transition there is no reason for UNCC to not come to Boone 1 for 1. That applies to all sports not just football.

Yes, the Western game is such a rivalry and so valuable, it happens to be the game we usually rest our starter. Hallock, Jackson, Presley, and Cadet, have ALL started against Western as the #2 QB. Kind of funny for a must win rivalrly game, isnt it?

If you think scheduling a Marshall (for example) and losing or winning will raise our profile you're ludicrous. If you think we're going to win against any SEC team for years you're ludicrous. So that leaves us with the teams that we have a chance beating, that will raise our profile. If we beat a Wake does it raise it, what about a ECU? Maybe but not much.

But maybe we're that much smarter then the Auburn's and Alabama's (and ever other FBS football team that schedules a FCS team like western). They think the're giving their beat up players a rest to play the teams that matter. However, we'll show them and play a team that will take us right to the big time.

No wonder these teams like Alabama have such crappy football teams and name recognition they spend too much time letting their players rest playing WCU. :o

However I'm not sure a big lost to an average BCS school will bring GOOD name recognition.

I'm not trying to down the team, but I just don't think people realize how tough it's going to be. I remember when we use to trade wins with Marshall (before they they were really good) and it hasn't been easy for them.

If we get a SBC invite before the summer, we've played our last game in Cullowhee. I'm not opposed to having an occasional game in Boone after we get our FBS sea legs, and we can play for the Jug, if the schools so desire, but we can't go there for a game. The fact that FBS teams do not travel to FCS opponents aside, over the last 20 years, Western has done nothing to warrant our doing so.

Now, for every other sport, I am not opposed to playing them one-for-one. In fact, we'd be stupid not to, as we need our non-conference games to be as close to Boone as possible until these Group of Five leagues work their way back to becoming more regional conferences. The more bus trips we can make for our non-league games, the less those plane rides will hurt in the wallet come conference time.

Jamel was the starting QB in 2012 wasn't he? And Hallock was one of two next in line. Steven Miller rushed for 245 yards for APP and we only came out 11 point ahead? Interesting, the way you guys are talking we should have blew them out 44-0.

Close games ... #1 in attendance ... close in-state schools ... opportunity to win .... tradition ... FBS teams usually play one FCS school...

Yeah, no reason to play them.

Jamal took a few snaps, big deal. All of those guys I listed beat Western as a #2 QB. Fact is Western stinks, and a close loss to an LSU type team does more for us than a western blowout.

I want whats best for App, nothing less.

The reason that we may not play WCU again doesn't have anything to do with many of the reasons already stated. The reason is that I don't think we'll be able to afford to play them.

At 1 million a pop, the SEC can afford to pay for a team to rest their players with. While i'm sure it would be interesting for WCU to play a FBS team that they have a better chance against (APP), it's not worth what the big schools can pay them. Really from their standpoint playing UNCC would be a better deal to them if offered the same money anyway. UNCC is a larger school, that may end up in a slightly better conference, and WCU has a good chance to beat them as well. Really that would be better for their name recognition.

So we may end up playing a mid level FBS schools for OOC games, hopefully we can get a UNCC, Wake, ECU or Marshall that would keep it somewhat local.

We should still play Western every so often, we may need that extra win to become bowl eligible certain years.

Maybe. The Can'ts are playing three FBS schools next year. Heck, they may beat us to the punch. Could a school just schedule 11 FBS opponents?

That's how they're funding their other sports.

I wonder if the price goes up the nearer it gets to bowl games, lol

Yep. No reason to play them. They are the worst or one of the worst in the SoCon. We beat 18 of last 20 time we played them as a "peer" with no scholarship advantage... and most times, we beat them with athority, especially in Boone. What would be the reason to play them EXCEPT to fill an unexpected hole in our home schedule once we are in FBS? We should and will forge new rivalrys with our new conference mates plus develop OOC patterns no doubt with teams like UNCC, ECU, Marshall, ODU and Wake.
