Re: New Hire
Has anyone identified where a $200,000 buy out would come from? I wonder how our athletic budget can absorb it. And I think the AD made the two year decision when an extension was granted. I’m fully expecting to have at least one more year.

Re: New Hire
Dustin Kerns at PC sounds like a great target to me. Only his second year there but he’s havibg a really strong season. Spent time at Wofford and Tennessee as an assistant.

Re: New Hire
It's not a small amount of money but it's a small price to pay for the 2020 season and the future of Appalachian Basketball. Let's have some perspective, y'all. This is the second most important athletic program on campus.

Re: New Hire
I've said it before and I'll say it again. If Gillin didn't have the money lying around somewhere for a buyout he never would have given Fox the extension last year. ADs aren't stupid when it comes to things like that. Well, most of them aren't.

Re: New Hire
He'd probably be on my second tier of candidates were I the AD. Where he is on Gillin's list is anybody's guess.
Re: New Hire
Sorry, Didn't see that name come up when I searched the topic. I had a double post since my original post didn't show up at first.

Exactly. Fox has to go. It is time for a change.Arsenal App wrote: ↑Fri Feb 22, 2019 10:43 amI've said it before and I'll say it again. Re: New Hire
I actually think the reasoning for hiring Fox (taking a proven assistant from a mid major with pedigree that was young and hungry for his shot) was the right approach. Just the wrong guy.
I think targeting a coach from the same type of background will be what happens again.

Re: New Hire
Fox was the guy we settled on when the top choices had all turned us down. I would have felt a lot better had he coached at an ACC, SEC, or Big East school in addition to Davidson. The SoCon was all he knew and perhaps he might have succeeded had we remained there. We'll never know and now it's back to the old drawing board.

Re: New Hire
With all the names being thrown around I'd like to throw my name in the hat because at this point why not. When I was younger I could grab them rim so I think that qualifies me. I'd even cut them a deal and coach for $129,999.99. My services are now on sale.

Re: New Hire
Which “top choices” can you verify actually turned us down? Lutz never interviewed and made more $ at State. Mike Young never interviewed as far as I know because he and family have a great thing going at wofford. Who else do we know was offered?Arsenal App wrote: ↑Fri Mar 01, 2019 2:11 pmFox was the guy we settled on when the top choices had all turned us down. Re: New Hire
Lutz and Young both said they weren't interested in the job when contacted and I think a couple of ACC assistants also passed. It wasn't a matter of interviewing. From what I understood at the time the job would have been Lutz's without so much as an interview. Fox was probably the only candidate officially "offered" because he was the only candidate who actually showed any interest and he likely had Bob McKillop wearing out Charlie Cobb on the phone about his hot young assistant who would be perfect for our program.

Socon may be better in basketball than the Sun Belt.Arsenal App wrote: ↑Fri Mar 01, 2019 2:11 pmFox was the guy we settled on when the top choices had all turned us down. Re: New Hire
SoCon is a better basketball league most years. The SoCon is not an inferior athletic league in the majority of sports. It just happens to sponsor FCS football.
