Re: Luke Combs
His voice power/control is among the best of any modern genre. There's disliking country, and then there's just not having an ear for good music at all...

Re: Luke Combs
I am about as far away from being a country music fan as you can get, but I think Combs is talented and has quality songs, and I actually like a few Stapleton songs. My wife listens to country, so if Combs or Stapleton are on I don’t immediately change her station.

Combs and Stapleton are the saviors of a genre that's being destroyed by Georgia Southern alums.appstatealum wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2019 8:45 amI am about as far away from being a country music fan as you can get, but I think Combs is talented and has quality songs, and I actually like a few Stapleton songs. Re: Luke Combs
I listen almost exclusively to country music but rarely anything after about 2004. I don't mind his voice, but the things these guys (and girls) sing about are just asinine. I'll just keep spinning the 80s and 90s country.

He’s won me over with this song. I might even go to one of his concerts.Chaz wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2019 8:51 amI listen almost exclusively to country music but rarely anything after about 2004. Re: Luke Combs
The content of love songs (Beautiful Crazy included) hasn't changed for a century. Hell, the subject of this thread is a song about his Southern accent. I think it's pretty creative. FGL singing "The truck's jacked up, flat bills flipped back Yeah you can find us where the party's at" deserves an eye roll for sure.
Critiques of modern country are identical to critiques of modern hip hop. Cherry Pickers with an implicit bias against the culture such music represents highlight the multitude of shitty examples while ignoring the best of the genre. Old white men hate hip hop and young progressives hate country. It's the nature of the beast.
But for every Migos there's a NAS and for every Florida Georgia Line there's a Luke Combs.
Caveat: It does seem like Chaz is one of the Country Fundamentalists, which strays from the above social trend I described. I respect that. No modern Country music will match Hank and George Strait.

Re: Luke Combs
I'll say up front that I'm not a country fan, so the Luke Combs version appeals to me far more than the George Straight, Merle Haggard, etc. Not trying to offend anyone because I respect someone who sticks to their guns about what they like. I do the same thing about my classic rock from the 70's (some stuff from later but selectively).
I just find it funny to hear the "subject matter" of the songs being the point that someone hates and the word "asinine" being applied when comparing it back to classic country which basically brags about having a hand full of subject including drinking, fighting, trucks, etc. Not exactly the lofty pedestal from which to look down on any other music. Just struck me as funny.
Stick to your guns, Chaz. We're all entitled to like what we like! Go Apps!

Re: Luke Combs
I'm a 60's/70's music fan but my grandson did turn me on to Combs. I actually like a few of his songs and that's saying something since I don't like today's country. Definitely like his passion for App.
Not to highjack this thread, but did anyone go to the Eric Church concert in Greensboro a few weeks ago? The reason I ask is my stepson went and he said Church held up a Duke flag and yelled "Duke sucks!" Then he said he bled carolina blue and white. Just wanted confirmation on this. If this is true he's no App alum in my book.

Re: Luke Combs
I wasn't there, but there are many past examples of Eric Church being an Uncle Tom.IM4ASU wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2019 10:46 amI'm a 60's/70's music fan but my grandson did turn me on to Combs. To his credit though, I believe he would at least be more publically supportive of Appalachian had a vocal minority of our fan base not demanded that we replace his specially-made football intro video with that same clip of a 90's Nicholas Cage movie. I can't imagine he wants to help his alma mater again after we disrespected him.
Re: Luke Combs
Yeah I was there.....it wasn't a flag, he grabbed someones koozie/beer to show camera and the koozie said "dook sucks".IM4ASU wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2019 10:46 am

Like you said, not to hijack the thread, but he did spend several minutes talking about his time at Appalachian. Talked about playing shows around town, like his first show--- the packed and rowdy, Monday 6pm time slot at Woodlands. Also, big screen zoomed on someone wearing an ASU shirt, so let's not dismiss him too quickly.
