So ends the 2018-2019 Athletic Year....highs and lows like very other. As for baseball ,we have improved, but not nearly enough to compete for a championship.

Good job Coach Smith this year. We are now moving toward the goal. Keep the momentum going.

The team did show improvement but we're still a long way from the first division. I look at the starting lineups for the top five or six teams in the league and regularly see six or seven players batting .300 or better. We have one or two.
We were lucky today that we gave up just one run in the first inning. UL very easily could have put three or four on the board in the first. Walks, balks, a stolen base and a throwing error made us look like Keystone Cops for a few minutes there. The kids did manage to escape down by only one and eventually forged a 2-2 tie--but couldn't hold the bad guys down.
As the *forever underdogs* usually say, "Just wait 'til next year!"

If it happens to the Apps, it happens to me!

There's still a significant talent gap as witnessed by the fact that we had no player make first or second team all conference. To think a couple of weeks ago we were a 1/2 game out of first in the East but our pitching and fundamentals fell off pretty quickly. But, there does appear to be a heart beat. Hopefully we continue to see progress.

I think we would have beaten the Cajuns had the trip to Conway through the swamp not been so treacherous.

Hitting and pitching are woeful but other than that we are fine.

We're still not fully funding the scholarships for this team...Kermit has this team pointed in the right direction. There is some strong talent coming in next year which should continue the trend.

Another year of recruiting and development of the guys on the roster and things will continue to improve. I have confidence in Coach Smith. The last couple of weeks was a bit frustrating but this season was actually fun to follow! I'm proud of these young men and the work they put in this season! Proud to be a MOUNTAINEER!

I think the coach has done a helluva job to get the baseball program where it is currently - however, even though I have been called the President of the Lollypop Guild (and other similar complimentary names) over the past 20 years, I have to say if you really think APP can become a constant presence in the upper levels of SB baseball you are only fooling yourselves. My comment has nothing to do with the quality of our coaches or our players. It is the simple fact that we are competing against programs where their players can play baseball all year round and at higher levels. Look at the teams at the upper level of NCAA baseball and I am not sure but I can't think of one program that is successful year-in year-out which isn't located in a warm climate (possibly Oregon State but I have never been to Oregon to experience their weather). It is just the way it is and the way it has been for as long as I can remember.

The good news is that it only takes a couple of really good players to compete .The bad news is that they have to be pitchers.

Good post. Every time I read about the climate in Boone being a factor someone points out two or three programs out of fifty in cold weather climates who do exceptionally well. Baseball players love warm sunny climates. There are exceptions.WVAPPeer wrote: ↑Wed May 22, 2019 2:27 pmI think the coach has done a helluva job to get the baseball program where it is currently - however, even though I have been called the President of the Lollypop Guild (and other similar complimentary names) over the past 20 years, I have to say if you really think APP can become a constant presence in the upper levels of SB baseball you are only fooling yourselves.
