Re: Coastal Unis
I'd say it would be cool to have a still up there on the hill, but someone would actually put it to use.

Re: Coastal Unis
Since we are talking about Yosef, I've been promoting this idea on this message board for a long time. Historically, the Yosef image comes from the 1800's, perhaps as late as the early 1900's. Our Yosef is not a frontiersman like Daniel Boone or Davey Crocket, but he represents the people who settled in western North Carolina, mainly Scots-Irish, German, and free African. I'm strongly in favor of a "real person" mascot that represents these settlers, both white and black. During the time the Germans were settling in the Appalachians, one family in particular became famous for their hunting dogs. This was the Plott family. They brought this breed from Europe for hunting big game like bear and boar. The Plott Hound became known for its courage and tenacity, the best friend of early mountaineers. Later, the Plott Hound would become North Carolina's official state dog. To my recommendation: Let's include a Plott Hound with our "real person" mascot to create a duo that I believe will become nationally known and will take our mountaineer brand to new heights.

Re: Coastal Unis
Not sure if I have the resources to buy anything from ESPN, but I will definitely bring it up to Doug next time I see him and see what the interest is from the school side.

I like that too. My son just got a Plott hound mix. Those dogs are good looking, loud, feisty, large, smart, fearless, and an absolute hand-full. Perfect mascot, except for the part about controlling him. Good luck with that part.appgrunt71 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 02, 2019 9:43 amSince we are talking about Yosef, I've been promoting this idea on this message board for a long time. Re: Coastal Unis
It's the state dog of North Carolina too. I think it looks enough different from the Bluetick Coonhound that UT uses to avoid confusion.AppAlum1 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 02, 2019 1:09 pmI like that too. Re: Coastal Unis
Perfect name for the hound: Moonshine.

Who would house and care for the Plott hound?

Re: Coastal Unis
I did a little research. Four colleges have canine mascots:
College Breed Name Cared for By
Yale Univ Olde English Bulldogge Handsome Dan Privately cared for
TX A&M Rough Collie Reveille Privately cared for
UT Bluetick Coonhound Smokey Privately cared for
UGA Bulldog Uga Privately cared for
At UT Smokey is cared for by a local family but during game days spends its time at a fraternity. Reveille is the highest ranking member of the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M, spending time with the Corps during game day.
I believe that it is the best practice for a canine mascot to have a loving private home. During game day the pup can hang out with a fraternity, the cheerleaders, or the ROTC cadets.
And, I like the name "Moonshine" as well.
