Some people just like to have something to complain about. H3LL if we won out and went to a NY6 bowl and won, some would complain that we didn't win by a large enough margin.

It is and UNC went on a 21-7 run at the end and beat us 24-21 from the 2nd quarter to the end of the game. Depends on what parts of the game you go by. Georgia Southern was the only SBC team to score more than 20 points against us last year. Like I said, I expected us to give up some more points but not go from 16 to 36 in FBS play.
When you take the 3 FBS opponents we are actually giving up 36.3 per game and I rounded down to help him. Every FBS opponent has scored 31 or more on us so far.
The Charlotte game was more disappointing to me but Healy was a new coach with not a lot of film to figure out what they were going to do. Same thing against UNC.
App actually went on a 27-3 run against UNC which no one mentions. That's pretty darn impressive.

One thing we are awful at right now: We give up way too many points to FBS programsericsaid wrote: ↑Fri Oct 04, 2019 3:53 pmThree things Louisiana is bad at: Special Teams, Turnovers, and Penalties.AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Fri Oct 04, 2019 3:51 pmLuckily, our special teams is playing so well that I feel like they can put us over the top if the offense has a couple turnovers and the defense is not able to force some fumbles.appstatealum wrote: ↑Fri Oct 04, 2019 3:24 pmAs high as they are on their offense right now....they can be exploited and set up to turnover the ball. If we play clean on the offensive side, we should get their QB to cough up the ball atleast once or twice and our special teams should dominate. Even if we see similar issues with our defense that we have over last few weeks, we will still be in good shape to win by double digits. If UL plays clean, it may be closer than we want and our special teams could be the difference.
This is a very good ULL team and I hope all 3 phases play a clean game because they are good enough to kick butt if you make mistakes.
One thing they are also bad at: They give up a lot of points
I'm expecting a high scoring game on both sides and thinking special teams and turnovers gives us the advantage. I would guess 42-35 win for us right now but I'm hoping to see all 3 phases click and have a bigger margin.

I'm the same way as you. After seeing GSU happen last year that is why I am the way I am now. I know that we can't overlook anyone, have to stay healthy, and after seeing our offense shut down one game I worry it happens this year and we see a lopsided loss.appstatealum wrote: ↑Fri Oct 04, 2019 2:22 pmI know too much and I’ve seen too much. Trust me, I would trade what I know to just enjoy the ride. I had similar concerns with our offense last year, where if our defense couldn’t dictate a game, I was concerned that our offense couldn’t put up enough points. I’m not as “gloom and doom” as some think I am, I just had significant expectations for this season and wasn’t expecting this defense to play like this.
PS- My glutes are phenomenal![]()
I completely enjoy the right but I too had major expectations for this team. There is serious NY6 chat in the building and those on the outside who know football are thinking it as well. We needed a tough defense to ensure that. I always felt Drink would do well offensively but I was worried that we would give up too many points on defense and that is what is happening. I would like for us to get it down to less than 28 against FBS opponents. I would feel very safe at that point because I don't think anyone holds us under 30 personally unless we have injuries or turnovers become a problem one week.

Re: Ted Roof Comments
So I channeled my ericsaid and ran some numbers. The defense had been on the field for 51 drives this season. Remove two drives of one play each for half time. They have been on the field for a total of 284 snaps. They are averaging 5.56 plays a possession and allowing 33 yards per drive. They have given up 18 TDs, 3FGs, 1 missed FG. They have also forced 18 punts, and 7 TOs. I would throw out 3 of those TD as two came on extremely short fields and one was in garbage time with Coastal's ones versus our 2's and 3's. So what does all that mean, it means that we need to find a way to get off the field and not allow teams to go on long sustained drives which result in TDs. Given that we lost some impact players at all three levels, I am sure that we will get better as the year goes on.
And for what its worth. I know that a lot of the upheaval has come from the UNCC game. In the second half, we had an 11 play drive to open the half and ran 14 offensive snaps the rest of the half. Charlotte ran 38 plays and had the ball an astounding 17:50 of the half. I don't care how good you are or are supposed to be. That is a lot of reps to maintain a high level through. Now I need to go take a shower.

Re: Ted Roof Comments
We've had one of the best red zone defenses in FBS the last few years, but that has gone away. Drink mentioned it on Tuesday as an area of concern. I think that the "take the ball, take their life" mentality doesn't help in the red zone that much (it's not terrible between the 20s) and they should concentrate more on just tackling and limiting opponents to 3 rather than give up 7.

Appalachian State 2007 .(which was a pretty good year for the brand)
ASU 34 Michigan (FBS #5) 32
ASU 48 Lenoir Rhyne 7
ASU 31 Northern Iowa 21

ASU 49 #24 Elon 32

ASU 37 Chattanooga 17
ASU 29 #12 James Madison 27
ASU 38 #14 Eastern Washington 35
ASU 55 #6 Richmond 35
ASU 49 #13 Delaware 21
Points Scored--App State 641 Opponents 400
We also gave up more points in the 4th Quarter that year, than any other year.
I love the defense we played last year and how we controlled the games. Plus, our Red Zone Defense was strong, allowing only 13 TD's in the opponent's 30 trips into the Red Zone in 2018. (We have already allowed 11 TD's in 14 opponent visits this year)
Maybe, we are more like the 2007 team, than the 2018 team. (Both were winners/champions and both had "sustainable" styles of play)
Also, we could have scored more against UNC. Coach Drink just took the foot off the gas and managed the game to a P5 victory.

So tired of hearing P-5 needed. Missed on PSU, WAKE, and Tenn. Need to build for the future. Were better than living from 2007. We should expect wins at ALL the scheduled games as UCF and Boise St. Stop the crying and get on board with 1-0 concept. To make it to better conference we need to expect great outcomes.

So much chatter - most comments I find insulting to the players. Are the athletes so limited and unskilled that they can only play to a scheme that they were recruited to? Really a simple, basic solution: fight off a blocker, tackle a ball carrier; cover a receiver, stay focused, don't listen to hype. one game at a time. That's my opinion!!!

Re: Ted Roof Comments
Let's put winning and losing into perspective. UCF, the top dog in G-5 is now 4-2 after going undefeated last year in the regular season and losing to LSU in the Fiesta bowl. It is possible for good teams to slide after a great year and in our case losing key players and a coaching staff is certainly a reason to slide, if you can call 4-0 achieved in a different way a slide. I feel fortunate that we have the staff we have. Imagine if we had hired an up and coming FCS coach with less experience instead of FBS experienced coaches? Would we be 4-0? Would we have beat UNC? I bet not.

But out of the 30 scored on our starters, one of those TDs was scored off of an INT where they started with a VERY short field (less than 10 yards I believe). Thank you for getting it. Many on here just have not. They keep making excuses. We have folks who think every coach our HC hires or any player they offer is great and makes every excuse. Drink has been great but made a mistake with Roof. The fact Roof did not keep the system the same has been my problem all along. Did I expect to give up just 15 a game again? No. Is losing Stout and the CBs alone worth 21 points? I don't think so. I was expecting about 21-24 points this year with the losses. Not giving up 35 or so a game.

Re: Ted Roof Comments
Yep, and at UNC the kickoff coverage team gave up a 75 yard return putting the defense in a tough spot right out of the gate. If you take away that TD, that means our defense held them to 24 and the Clemson juggernaut held UNC to 20, a difference of a field goal compared to our defense because UNC went for the 2, instead of a PAT, which failed in the Clemson game.Yosef84 wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2019 6:30 amBut out of the 30 scored on our starters, one of those TDs was scored off of an INT where they started with a VERY short field (less than 10 yards I believe). I also wonder if our D has played a little softer when we get big leads on the opponent, or if maybe more 2s and 3s start getting worked in here and there. I know at UNC the defense played 26 different players, mainly because of the cramping situation but I suppose Ted Roof is also responsible for the strength and conditioning and hydration of the players as well.
Oh yeah, we beat UNC by 3, but the defense scored 7 so THANK YOU Ted Roof and your defense!!

No it is not. Still though we never gave up 30 or more to a SBC team last year. We definitely need to start sustaining longer drives and can't turn the ball over. The defense is still trying to gel in this different scheme Roof is running so we need to give them as much help as possible.Yosef84 wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2019 6:30 amBut out of the 30 scored on our starters, one of those TDs was scored off of an INT where they started with a VERY short field (less than 10 yards I believe). Again though, bottom line here is that Roof changed things up just before the season and we are not running coverages and blitzes that made us as successful last year. Hopefully we see improvement on defense because the talent is there. ULL is a tough matchup that will test us for sure.

Roof's best showing was the UNC game, which was our toughest opponent to date. Our defense played inspired and the play calling was a good mix of disguising coverages, blitzes, and utilizing Gaither to control the middle and flats. I fully expect to see a thoughtful game plan for Wednesdays game.

Is Nate Woody doing anything? It would be a wise move on Drink’s part to bring in the architect of this hybrid D as a consultant for the remainder of the season. We need to get back stoping the run and making in game adjustments that work.
