BigC and WKBC

Unread post by NewApp » Wed Oct 09, 2019 6:55 pm

The fading in and out of the signal withstanding, I caught a few minutes of an interview of BiG C on 97.3.

Does BigC still post on the board?

Yes, mostly just his prediction threads.

Speaking of WKBC... I have driven to Boone 1000+ times from Greensboro, I switch over to 97.3 once on 421... I have noticed for the last couple years that their signal doesn't seem as strong as it used to be (I'm in same car).

I have no issues here in Charlotte getting signal (all the way to south Charlotte). Not sure if FM radio aims a transmitter or something like that, but they could have adjusted something.

WKBC has a North-South directional signal.

FM radio is subject to all kinds of interference. Both weather and terrain related. Strong signals are typically strong enough to push through those factors. And yes, some stations aim their signals.

Funny story...the FCC limits FM signals to 100,000 watts. There was (and might still be) a San Diego rock station that put a 200,000 watt tower in Tijuana and aimed it across the boarder. It was strong enough to reach LA and really pissed them off. Haha.

From Wikipedia:

Due to its tower being located 2,600 feet above the surrounding terrain, the station can be heard as far south as Charlotte (providing city-grade coverage of the city's northern suburbs) and as far east as Winston-Salem when it starts to interfere with WQMG of Greensboro. The signal carries into the north-most portions of South Carolina including: York, Cherokee and Lancaster counties. It can also be heard clearly in parts of southwestern Virginia.[citation needed]

I‘ve gotten it as far away as Danville, Va. in the car for basketball games in the days before the TuneIn App. It was fuzzy, but I could still tell what was going on.

That’s what it looked like in person. It was a little fuzzy but you could still tell it was supposed to be basketball.

Sounds like some of our previous basketball teams. It looked a little fuzzy but you could still tell it was supposed to be basketball.
Fair point.

Coverage map here.
https://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?c ... service=FM

I picked up the station in Burlington once in the early evening near the Elon exit and Alamance Crossing. That happened once. Generally I pick up the signal near the county line between Forsyth and Guilfor, which is pretty much what the map shows between distant and fringe, and at that point I am in my car.

The signal is fairly circular but it is a bit more N-S than E-W.

Doesn't pick up well in South CLT, especially south of 485, competes with with a hispanic music station.

That’s what we need. A Spanish broadcast of our football games.

I love hearing clips of the Spanish broadcast of the Panthers games. I don't understand the words but I know whether the play was good or bad...so much passion in the tone.

I don't know where the Latino station is located, Rock Hill ,SC or maybe Monroe,NC , but it is getting on my nerves when App is ready to score and it fades out. I live off Rea road area in south CLT. I have been listening to the AM station in Belmont,NC that carries App games.

I grew up in SWVA. Signal came in great in a spot in the grocery store parking lot downtown just off I 81 on Lee Highway. My dad and i would drive to the store and sit in the parking lot and listen to away games. Good memories. I live in Enka/West Asheville and I could usually get the signal and listen to games if I got on I 40, even as far West as Canton in Haywood County. Now the signal fades in Linville as I drive down the mountain after games. But over the years prior to streaming I was eternally grateful to WKBC!
