Offensive Game Plan

ULL has a good offense. If we are winning, it plays to our advantage to keep their offense off the field. Especially if we are moving the ball. I simply don't understand the desire of some fans to see us "open up the playbook" or whatever each time we get the ball. There is more strategy to winning a game than that.

That being said, it's going to be a fun day when our offense is hitting on all cylinders and our defense is playing as well as they did last night. That will be lots of points earned and few given up and, god willing, that will be against USC. (and GaSo)

Not saying that I really “care” if we open it up or not, more that it seems like we have way more in the tank than we’ve shown. Seems rudimentary with all the talent we have on that side of the ball.

Our offense has been extremely simple/predictable and that’s where my “mastermind” thought came from. Maybe mastermind was a poor choice of words but I find it hard to believe our offense will continue to be this vanilla if/when we ever get behind. I’m impressed he’s stuck to his script in close games with a small lead the way he has. It certainly seems like he’s had way more confidence in our defense all year than I have had until now, which is a good thing.

Also, it doesn’t matter at all to me how vanilla it looks as long as we keep scoring more than our opponents. Keep winning and I’ll keep calling Drink a mastermind haha!

Reality is, it was extremely risky to do what he did on that final drive. You drain the clock and not get one f those fourth down conversions, now ULL has a chance to go up by 4 and possibly leave us with little time. I figure he knew they would struggle to throw the back on us if they were in obvious passing situations and if we could bend and not break, their FG to tie it wouldn’t be a given.

Great thing is, the more the players see this approach work, the more they believe in themselves to execute this gameplan and avoid what we normally see from collegiate athletes when pressure builds and momentum shifts.

I agree. I personally wish he had mixed it up just a little in order to avoid those 4th down situations. I felt the same about the last quarter at UNC. My thinking would be to preserve the drive and get some points. Obviously he managed to do both of those AND drain the clock. There's a reason I'm a CPA and he is the head coach of the Mountaineers, I guess. LOL

Probably my biggest takeaway from all of it. That marks down a second game this year where our guys showed some unprecedented poise and confidence in times of pressure.
