My wife has family in Louisville that are old grads of the school, they love Satt. I told one yesterday that as much as I love Satt, I really think Drink is a better coach simply for the clock management issues that plagued Satt while at App. I told them it wasn't a slight of Satt, I am just that excited about Drink.

Agreed. And to think we had fans who thought it would be okay if we lost 3 games or so. I think we would have lost two under Satt. We still may lose one but I think we have a great shot to run the table.

Frankly, Satt and Louisville have had more impressive wins than we have had. They own wins over a top 25 team and one that had been there. That in no way diminishes the job Drink has done and my confidence in what he can accomplish here.

Satt’s doing a great job with that team. As for us, we have the maximum number of “impressive wins” available to us, so I think we’re all good with that.

Satt inherited some good athletes in a terrible culture. UofL is supposed to get elite athletes. We have always had the culture but just couldn't recruit against P5s. That is still the case today. But I will always take our culture over theirs. We don't just recruit great athletes who barely survive academically. We recruit smart athletes who may not have elite ability as a freshman, but can be developed. Just as importantly, you have to believe in the Team more than Self. Satt is on his way to instilling App type culture. If he is truly successful off the field, he will build a top 10 team on the field. I wish nothing but success for UofL because he represents App every time he steps on the field.

Louisville won only 2 games last year and 0 in the so-so ACC - not taking sides in any way - hope both excel - BUT - Coach Drink was left with a much better situation in every way ---

Drink has a better situation in our eyes but Louisville still had the better recruiting classes the last 4 years by far over us, according to Rivals and 247.

I think what both coaches have done this year is impressive. Drink has done more at this point than Satt had ever done and Satt said they did all they could at App. Drink is proving that more can be done. Then when you look at Satt he has taken a team that showed no life last year and got them playing to their full potential.

Legit question. Say Drink goes 13-0 and Satt goes 7-5 who would be coach of the year between the two? I would slightly lean Drink because going 13-0 is very hard no matter what and even harder for a first year head coach. Satt inherited a team that was underachieving but we were not sure by how much. I expected 5, maybe 6, wins just because the ACC has so much parody. He may win 7 or 8 though and that would definitely be more than anyone expected them to do.

Drink has a better situation but you do realize that based on the recruiting rankings Satt still has a way more talented team than we do right? He has a potential first round pick and we certainly don't have that.

Legit question. Considering how tough it is to go undefeated who will do the better job if Drink goes 13-0 and Satt finishes say 7-5? I think Satt beats Kentucky and Syracuse to get to 7-5. 13-0 is incredibly difficult to do and yet when you consider where Louisville was 7-5 was a big time season for them. I expected him to win 5 games for sure and possibly 6. He may win 7 or 8.
No disrespect to Satt as he has already won more games at Louisville then I expected him to first year, but I think 13-0 for App would be a bigger accomplishment than 7-5 for Louisville. If Louisville wins out and goes to a bowl as a 9-3 team then I'll give Satt the nod even if App runs the table.

While Louisville was a dumpster fire last year, it was only because the coach lost the team. They had some really impressive seasons in very recent history and have been recruiting well based on the success of those teams. There was a lot of really good talent on that team, a lot left but plenty remained. It just needed a new culture and a by in from the players. Satt has clearly been able to accomplish that and it shouldn't surprise anyone. But this wasn't a team that never wins and needed a complete rebuild, it was a team that has been very successful in recent history and had an inexcusable bad year because the coach lost the team. It really was a good situation for Satt and he knew it. Kudos for the job he is doing. I still think 13-0 trumps anything.

Louisville had the talent for sure. Unless Satt goes 10-3 I will take what we have done. Louisville had the talent to win 7-8 games for sure but my only question was how well would they click with the new staff and handle the new schemes.

The interesting thing for them is Conley doing so well and we know he would have been redshirted this year at App. QB was the one position where they really did not have ACC caliber talent. They have some dudes everywhere else but do need a few more on each side of the ball to contend for the ACC title. I expect them to lose 2 more games but if they win out then you could argue Satt would have them playing at a higher level than even that team should.

I would go with Scott. Drink inherited a championship team who knew they could win. Yes he has taken us to the next level, but it had to be more "expected" than what anyone could have dreamed Scott would do in year one.

Agree with your line of thinking. Just look at fans expectations as one measuring stick-UL fans openly said they expected 2 wins this season, and would be pleased with anymore than that, as long as the team and culture showed progress. Satt had a harder job getting the team to believe in themselves and buy into what he was selling.

Man, y’all must not have heard what people were saying about Louisville’s talent last year. Sure, they have some good athletes, like any P5 team. But Petrino did not recruit well and once Lamar Jackson left that got exposed fully. I remember hearing that one opposing coach last year said it might have been the worst P5 roster he’d ever seen.

The whole thing about Satt saying he’d done all he could do at App is overblown IMO. He could have chosen his words better, but we all know what he meant. He was moving on to a job that paid more, had way more resources, competed in a P5 league with all the advantages that entails, etc. No he hadn’t beaten a P5 or gone to the NY6 at App, and I’m sure he knew that. But he was ready to take the next step in his career.

Satt’s said a ton of nice things about App since he left, but some people want to latch onto that one line from a presser so they can have a grudge to hold onto.

I agree. He had maximized his earning potential and was presented, no, earned the opportunity to become very wealthy somewhere with the resources to make it happen. He transitioned this team to the next level. He has now transitioned his family to the next level financially. Every one of us would seize that same opportunity.

Yeah, I don’t hold it against him and understand what he meant. I also understand why he left. Sometimes when you stay in one place you get comfortable and you really have achieved all you personally can in that role. I think Satt probably felt like that (but have no real idea). He’s still a Mountaineer and always will be, and I will pull for him and that staff to succeed, as long as it doesn’t impact App negatively. They guided us through our transition with class and integrity and I am thankful for all they did.

It was not that good but it was better than people thought. Those kids quit. He changed some schemes and has those kids playing harder. I am very impressed with what they did but I thought they would win 4-5 games this year. For them to be 1-2 wins farther along than 5 is not unheard of. There is some talent there. I'll bet you they have more players drafted than we do this year. They were nowhere near the worst P5 team. There were at least 15 P5 teams who had way less talent than them. Rutgers, Northwestern, Oregon State, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech, and many others come to mind. The ACC has a lot of parody so I could see Scott winning 4 more games or just 1-2 more games. Every week is a dog fight in that league. Clemson is the only elite team but there are 5-6 other teams who are 20-30 caliber for sure.
