Lock it up in the trophy case and send them a picture of it for their 7 wins in 37 years.

Re: Old Mountain Jug
Speaking of the Can'ts, I visited their board this weekend for the first time since we left Delphi. After reading that stuff, I now know where the North Korean news agency gets its writers.
That is the most hate-filled, insecure group I have ever seen. I'd pass it off as just message board talk, but most of their fans I know in person are the same way.
It would suit me just fine if we washed our hands of them entirely after we leave the SoCon.

The Cant board fans are talking of boycotting the last game in Boone. I hope their will be a few present to hear 30,000 singing, Na Na Na Na Na, Hey Good Bye!

Re: Old Mountain Jug
Smash it on the ground as a symbolic expression of Appalachian finally breaking free of 30 years of FCS bondage. Also put the video on youtube.
In all seriousness, if there is one game this year that we absolutely can not lose, it's against the can'ts.

Agreed. The guy trying to start a SoCon movement to boycott ASU football is especially disturbed.appst89 wrote:Speaking of the Can'ts, I visited their board this weekend for the first time since we left Delphi. Re: Old Mountain Jug
Will we create a 'trophy game' with GaSo since they will be a our primary rival in the Sun Belt.

Re: Old Mountain Jug
I suggested last week that we do this. My suggestion for the trophy is a field goal post. We already know it fits in their bus!appmaj wrote:Will we create a 'trophy game' with GaSo since they will be a our primary rival in the Sun Belt.

Re: Old Mountain Jug
I'm going to hold my judgement on who is going to be our rival until we have played a few seasons in the league. There is no telling who might rise up to be more of a rival than GaS. Look at the distance of some rivals in other conferences. Its not always one of the closest teams that are your biggest rival. I think they are at the top of the list of potentials but I'll wait a while and see what the other teams and their fans are going to be life.

Re: Old Mountain Jug
Most ppl on here won't agree, but I say we play WCU as one of our OOC games each year and keep it going even in an "unofficial" status. The Jug was only added after several years anyway. In that case usually the last winner keeps it.appmaj wrote:If we beat Western this year what will become of the Old Mountain Jug?
I think playing WCU would both honor the tradition of the rivalry and honor both's schools mountain heritage, while still giving a us a "soft game" at least once a year. In the case that we beat all SB and FBS teams we play out of the gate, they we're just throwing them a bone. In the case, that we go through some learn and growing process it might be good to play someone, that we should win against.
Does WCU ever have a chance of winning and can it be called a rivalry if they don't. Well the Army-Navy game as been going on for something like a 120 years and I haven't heard where they were going to call it off anytime soon because Navy has won the last 11 years.
While others will say that we should use all our OOC games to play "big named" school because playing WCU won't help us get in the national championship games, I imagine that we're going to some pretty tough schedule and fan issues anyway. It might be good to way to wait till we're beating FBS teams on a regular basis before scheduling all our games on a higher level. Throwing out our traditionally highest attended game, might not be our best move at a time we really want to show that moving up was a smart decision.
Will it actually happen? I'm not sure, I think there is lots of support for it (just not on here) but that's where money comes into play. WCU already has seen that play for pay, for them is a money maker. Their basketball and track teams are much improved over where they were because of the million dollar football games they play, next year they play 3 FBS teams. APP on the other hand will most likely try to budget low cost FCS teams to aid the bottom line the first few years. I think this will help make APP vs WCU games about impossible unless both schools feel the fan desires are the most important issue.

Outside of the major conferences, App and JMU are the most prominent institutions that line the Blue Ridge. Given our recent history, The Battle for the Blue Ridge Jug seems appropriate.

The cant guy wanting to boycott is Boat..... I call him boatramp. Owns or did own a boat dealership in Thomasville. I think it went under. He is the one who always says App-aLAYshun Sucks to end his post. He talked one time about saying something about the App-a-LAY-shun sucks to his mother in church. I replied that the minister then said "and western swallows". And for this I am permanently banned from pride? board. Always wondered what they had pride in anyway?

Re: Old Mountain Jug
I have mixed emotions about it. I definitely don't want it to be destroyed. If that were even to come up I would pull it's twin out of storage, paint it myself, and give that one to them. The original is personal to me since my grandfather, father, and mother are all gone now. But I also don't believe we can keep up yearly games with WCU either. I know we will have a lower division OOC game most years but I don't like the idea of blocking off a "must" game each year since we won't really know who will want to come to Boone and when until we are finally set where we are going to be for the long term.proasu89 wrote:Moose,
What do you think about the jug?
Most schools rivals aren't from a lower division, even if they are a move up school. They are from the same division and it should be that way. We've moved on and will develop new rivals. We already have a good start with GaSou. No matter how long the tradition goes back it's not our job to keep it up. If Western wants to keep up the rival title and game then pony up and move up. If not, then I think the jug should stand as a part of our history and be proudly displayed in our trophy case. We can always get something different to play for with our new rival (a can each of Lysol and Deep Woods Off seems appropriate for GaSou but that only works for going down there

Re: Old Mountain Jug
30-7 over the last 37 years says to me they are not in our league and haven't been! I have not considered them a rival in a long while. In a rivalry you should be able to go into the game and not know who is going to win most years.

Re: Old Mountain Jug
My vote would be to change the Jug from a football trophy to an all-sports trophy. While we may only play them occasionally in the future in football, we'll more than likely play them annually in most other sports. Whoever wins the most games between the two schools each year gets the trophy. This could actually heat up the rivalry as football is essentially a no-contest right now and in the foreseeable future.
