Jealous people tend to write this way. What do you expect from a Western alumni?

Re: Article on Old Mountain Jug History
I noticed but I let them have as many free swings as they want. We beat them like a redheaded stepchild on the field so bad he can remember what he wants. Bottom line is we own the jug, dominated the series, and no longer play them because we moved up a level. The factual stats prove who is better. I'm use to delusional WCU fans. They have to live in a fantasy world because reality just sucks.

Believe me, this was not lost on me. Just seems like this was flattering to some when it reeks of jealousy and is filled with subtle shots at App beginning to end. This is nothing new from Ed; hes a P5 fanboy that is from a school in the middle of nowhere where their football is worse than his writing.HighPointApp wrote: ↑Wed Nov 27, 2019 9:39 pmJealous people tend to write this way. I read this as a very well hidden statement that we should know our place, and our place is in the FeCeS with western. Screw him.

Re: Article on Old Mountain Jug History
I hated that article so much. It does no good and Hardin's digressions take away from his points.
Every article he's written about App this season has included backhanded compliments at best. This is the worst.
He could have written about WCU's marching band being in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade and how they're enjoying Broadway shows and even rented their own boat this week. There's a lot of POTM alums that would have loved to read about it.
He could have written about WCU's football program and the crossroads they're now at with Speir after a rough season.
He could have written about a gameday in Cullowhee, which is actually quite nice and lovely, tell people on Tobacco Road about a gameday atmosphere they've never heard of.
He could have written about WCU's trip to Alabama and how the programs prepares for such a game.
But no, he wrote a bitter column filled directed at his school's former rival that tells part of a story but overshadows it with personal anecdotes and sneering commentary.

I have a replica in my office that my staff made and gave me many years ago . I’m keeping it. In any event ,the only hope the Cats had was Jim Fox, and he has vacated the premises.

Re: Article on Old Mountain Jug History
Well, Covington was nothing but a douche to me. From the very beginning. I never knew why. I never did anything to him and he should have worked with me at least as I was sports director at WATA at the time, but he treated me like crap. To the point where I was supposed to ride the team bus to a basketball game at Wake one day and he told me the wrong place to meet and the bus left without me. I have no doubt he did that on purpose. I had to go get my car and drive over there. Barely made it in time to get set up for the broadcast.AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 27, 2019 8:58 pmI was not sure on the actual year. Thought this was a pretty cool piece on the history of the Old Mountain Jug. There were some tidbits in there I didn't know about the jug. The most surprising (and shocking) to learn is that I share the last name of the person who discovered the jug on some family land in Caldwell County. It's a very real possibility that I'm related to the founder of the jug considering much of my family is from that area. Very very cool thing to find out today.
I love how he says we refuse to play them like we might be scared. Honestly, we get nothing out of playing them. I would like for WCU to name one reason that could benefit us playing them. I'm not even a fan of playing any FCS teams anymore because we could be on the other side of that 2007 Michigan game now. We need to play top tier AAC teams and P5 teams, Marshall, ECU, etc.
If WCU wants the jug so bad I say they pay us 500k for it and they can have it or how about boosting yourself like we did and get yourself an invite to a FBS conference. Then we would definitely have a reason to play them.
I'm not sure if many of our people know but Covington worked with the Blue-Gray Game for a while.

Re: Article on Old Mountain Jug History
I remember that last Jug game. There was more anxiety for that game than for any game in a long time or since (it was discussed on this board). We all knew it was the last game, and it was improbable, but possible, ("so, you're saying there's a chance") that the unthinkable could happen and it be in Cullowhee forever.
I wasn't a season ticket holder at the time...we bought our single game tickets really early for this one. Quickly in the 1st quarter all anxiety was gone...we were up pretty big early on. It was one of the coldest games I've ever been to (I think 17 degrees or something like that), and it took a looooong time because of all the clock stoppages for scores, and an injury delay where they had to strap a player to a backboard. My wife braved the elements because I explained the importance of this game (she has since said she'll never do that again). The year before we had gone to Cullowhee to see the last game ever down there.
Not sure there's any benefit to playing them any more. It would bring up nostalgia but not necessarily the good kind. They were never a "rival" to us during my sports lifetime (started attending games in '86). So no real benefit to us. And it'd be just bitterness and complaining to them. Someone like ETSU can fill the nostalgia role if we want that. Those games were fun for a long time. Even with the one-sidedness, it was cool how students from both schools make the trip each year, many of whom knew each other.

Re: Article on Old Mountain Jug History
Probably something to do with WATA. The folks I knew that knew him well liked him fairly good. The worst SID in our history for treating people badly was Mike Flynn. Flynn was a jerk to many people and alienated a lot of folks. When he left there were celebrations by some. I don't get why people can't be nice and try to get along.AppinATL wrote: ↑Thu Nov 28, 2019 10:27 amWell, Covington was nothing but a douche to me. From the very beginning. I never knew why. Have to be careful with that radiator shine corked and bottled like fine wine.firemoose wrote: ↑Wed Nov 27, 2019 2:08 pmJust to give some more context the jug was my grandfather's. Roby is my dad and Dee my mom. I went with dad to dig the jug out of Pop's shed and I helped mom paint it. The actual idea for the jug came about during one of our annual New Year's Eve parties we used to have that a lot of App admins/friends attended. Those parties also included neighbor and Western grad Don Lucas, who had a lot of friends at WCU. Good natured back and forth led to a discussion of a trophy for the game and the idea was born.
Despite what was said in some of the old media guides that jug was not a replica. Not by a long shot. I pulled the cork out as we hit the bottom of the mountain and it broke apart. The fumes about sacked us. It was a cold ride up the mountain with all the windows on Dad's truck open, sucking shine fumes out of the cab. I was 12 and that's one memory that will never go away.
Lots more backstory than that but it's a difficult time health wise right now so that will have to do.
They want the jug I've got another just like it buried somewhere. I don't ever want anything to happen to this one. Too many memories.

Tidbits of history like this are what makes App what it is. And no amount of athletic budget or tv audience can replace it.
Personally I’d be fine hosting the whee once a year. Make it the same weekend the SEC plays all their FCS games.
