When you feel good, you sell better.
This is more than just the “analysis” of Clark, I like Shawn Clark as a person and as a coach. As previously mentioned, he’s passionate about our school and really wants us to succeed, I can get on board with that.
Maybe we have a bunch of geezers on this board that don’t understand the importance of leveraging our position to benefit us in the future, but selling the University on a certain look/feel falls right in line with the where we are trying to go, up.

I really can’t believe the moronic stuff I’m reading right now. People are ACTUALLY debating spitting? Is this really a serious topic? Spitting? Maybe I’m just getting old but for gods sake. And if I hear the word brand (branding) again I might vomit. Talk about an absolutely worn out phrase/word. Appalachian State is a university and we have a football team. This branding crap is about over the top. These days everything has to have a cool word or an acronym.
One of you cool dudes please, please define what coach feel even is. Is it a visor, sweater vest, khaki pants (Harbaugh)?

I believe that is what it was. I’ve seen the shells on the sideline in the past, and several times I saw him specifically chewing then spitting something white.

I thought that might be the case too. Guess I'll pay more attention when I rewatch.

Re: That “Head Coach feel”
I didnt notice this spitting everyone is talking about, maybe because I was At the game and watching the FOOTBALL game! But maybe he just spits a lot. Maybe it is sunflower seeds, maybe it doesn’t really make a damn! Anyone ever care two shits about a baseball manager spitting seeds during the entire game no! It is the game of football! Not a kids tea party! People give it a rest!!!!
And it what he wears or spits absolutely has nothing to do with the discipline of the team. When is the last time we saw the head coach get in a players ass after making a dumb unsportsmanlike call????? Been a while. Someone as 34 how it feels because he got plenty from Clark the Head coach after his dumb mistake which is what it was and the Head coach handled it.
There needs to be more post about us being one of only a few 13-1 teams this year and 5-0 in first 5 bowl eligible years than this dumb thread!

I actually have a memory of being on the sidelines as a kid and wondering how it was possible to spit so much with little foamy balls of spit. My saliva doesn't work that way and trying to emulate that just made my shirt wet. Carry on

Re: That “Head Coach feel”
How in the hell was your post meant to be taken if not as a complaint that our head coach’s appearance didn’t meet your standards?TheAppalachianState wrote: ↑Sun Dec 22, 2019 1:04 pmI guess my post caught the misinterpretation bug, as ppl seem to think this was a complaint in regards to the attire or whether or not Clark can win games.
This thread is an observation of the HC position in which is regarded to the brand we push, in my opinion there is no piece lesser than the other when you cover these topics, everything we do is important down to last brick. By no means was this an indication of his play calling, or that he chooses to wear a hoodie and cap, albeit im not a fan of watching someone spit 5-7 times in a span of 30 seconds, but that’s neither here nor there, whatever you have to do to win.
Maybe we should make 5 more threads about the same game before we move on to discuss other topics to strengthen our university brand? Absurd comments saying to take this thread down? I’m sorry, but sh*t like that is ridiculous on a board where people want to improve our University.

Re: That “Head Coach feel”
Lol okay I guess I’ll go over my same post again, just for you.
This thread is about our position nationally, and the marketing that we do and how to improve our spot as we grow. Marketing is always important but now more than ever. Beating UAB isn’t something to boast about, it’s UAB... not even a champion this year. 13-1 is fantastic, but not the point of this thread. Go to another thread if you want to talk about the number of wins or something else, we are all old enough to read I hope.
The head coach is one of the teams most important pieces, not just for playcalling but the overall perception (some call it swag if that helps). At no point in my thread did I say Clark cannot coach or that he needs to dress better, you are a fool if you thought otherwise.
Look, the point I’m trying to make is about how we market ourselves to put us further than that of Boise or UCF, if your goal is to just be like those teams, that’s great, not my goal. I want App State to be THE team, winning is a great contributor, marketing that greatness brings in more eyes, more money.
And yes, when you are on the big stage, everything matters.

Re: That “Head Coach feel”
Why? We won by two touchdowns, the season is over and this team will never play another game with it's current roster.
In games where we had 9 or more penalties (Charlotte, South Alabama, Troy and UAB), we were 4-0 and won every game by at least 14 points.
The one game we lost, by 3, in bad weather for passing the football, many complained we were flat. We had 4 penalties for 43 yards in that game (one of which was a questionable defensive pass interference.)
The 2019 Appalachian State Mountaineers finished 13 and 1 . They overcame new systems, new coaches, most team's best shot, won 2 P5 games on the road, overcame another coaching change and met the challenge time and time again. We are one of the top programs in FBS (and may do more with less from an Athletic budget standpoint, than any other program in the country)

Read your original post and of course this one. Your definitely moaning and complaining. If this makes you feel good then carry on.

Re: That “Head Coach feel”
The attitudes on this board seem to rival the temperament of all those last minute shoppers at Wal-Mart earlier. It wasn't pretty there either. Let's not lose the good cheer this soon after such a great season and bowl win. Honestly App family, looking at the state of so many other programs, we could have a lot worse to complain about. I'm rather proud of our administration, coaches, players, students, alumni, and fans, and I wouldn't let a little spit get in the way of that.

Re: That “Head Coach feel”
You know, I didn’t really want to talk about other schools, but Minnesota is a great example of what I meant when I started this thread. PJ Fleck does an amazing job with marketing where he goes, using his “Row the Boat” motto and definitely attributing swag on and off the field. You just get that “feeling” sometimes when you see someone like that and doing those things, which by the way he’s done that since his first game.
In hindsight, this thread probably should’ve waited a few days so people could come in and talk about the same thing a few more times until they’re blue in the face. But my eyes are now on 2020 already, now that we closed our 2019 season.
In any case, I’ll wait for more threads similar to my train of thought to start appearing as I’m sure there will be those that want to start working on the next step on what we can do as fans and those in the Yosef Club to push our brand nationally.

Dabo Swinney. Sweatshirt (little oversized) baseball cap...hope he gets that "Head Coach Feel"....
I hope Coach Clark is successful. Letting DJ Smith lead the App St Party Chant in the locker room is all class. He knows DJ is leaving and could have let a coach that will remain lead the locker room. Specifically mentioned him in post game PR. That is class and feels like Head Coach Feel to me
