Part of my reasoning is based on this notion that “young coach” = “guaranteed success”. Which is obviously not the case but I think Sean McVay’s sudden (albeit fleeting) success with the Rams caused this sudden burst of insanity. E.g. Arizona hiring Kingsbury after going 35-40 in 6 seasons in Lubbock.Yosef84 wrote: ↑Wed May 13, 2020 8:04 amI think they'll have to have more than a decent season to make that jump. He's going to have to either sustain a successful trend or knock the top out of a season. I do think Healy is a very good coach and he will probably get there at some point. Things are crazy right now and there are factors that are impossible to predict so I could be totally wrong. My crystal ball is very cloudy and my track record for predictions really stinks lately. LOL
That type of ripple generally makes its way to the college ranks and you see P5 teams make equally confounding decisions based on likability, or looks, or charisma, as opposed to X’a & O’s, or program management. There’s some nuance there and certainly charisma and the like are also a head coach requirement, but you can be the slickest talker/best recruiter/social media all star and that’s all great. But it might not mean shit on Saturday.
All that is to say Healy is young and charismatic and came up with Club LIT. To his credit he’s definitely bolstered UNCC’s recruiting. Don’t be shocked if they win 7-8 games in a weak CUSA and he gets scooped up by a power player desperate for a “youth revival”.

Re: ODU AD wants to blow up CUSA
A lot of this started with Dick Vitale almost 20 years ago. A Division II coach I know would complain about it. His complaint was that the camera would pan the Duke or CHeat bench, and Dicike V would pick out an assistant and talk him up. Presidents of schools who have little to no knowledge of athletics, other than the boosters are looking to replace the basketball coach, would call the AD and say "get me that guy." The president couldn't see beyond winning the press conference, and all of a sudden the old road D-II coaches took to becoming D-I coaches was no longer the way things were done. He had a point, though he really wasn't a D-I guy -- he loved him some transfers and reclamation projects -- but I couldn't blame him for wanting to get that D-I payday.ah59396 wrote: ↑Wed May 13, 2020 12:09 pmPart of my reasoning is based on this notion that “young coach” = “guaranteed success”. I think you're spot on about the McVay influence, and I'd say it's specifically young coaches who are perceived as QB whisperers. And if they look good in a visor, even better. That's how a guy like Kingsbury manages to fail up so spectacularly; NFL teams overlook the record and just see "he developed Mahomes."ah59396 wrote: ↑Wed May 13, 2020 12:09 pmPart of my reasoning is based on this notion that “young coach” = “guaranteed success”. Drink fits that same profile except that he looks like your dorky neighbor, so he might not rise quite as fast.

Re: ODU AD wants to blow up CUSA
I agree about getting a coach who can win regardless of their alma mater. I don’t fall into the “insistence” category but my guess is that our fans want an “App guy” because the program doesn’t pay much comparably speaking and unlike Drink, an “App guy” will more than likely stay longer than 1 year. This is especially important considering where the program will be next year after losing a ton of senior talent.APPdiesel wrote: ↑Wed May 13, 2020 11:30 amAppStFan1 I love that we got an "App guy" in Shawn Clark but I didn't understand the insistence on it from some fans. Give me a coach who can win...if he's an App guy, great. If he's not and he leaves for a bigger job after 2 or 3 years, fine. If Clark can get it done he'll have big time schools calling in 3 years. He loves it here but if anyone really believes he'll stick around for 20 years you're naiive.
Pure speculation but losing all that talent and also having to replace another HC doesn’t seem like a formula for consistent winning we have all grown accustom too. Let’s just hope Clark is able to implement all the things he learned from Satt, Drink and others to keep the train on the tracks this season.
My question is, if Drink inherited Satt’s Ferrari, what is Clark inheriting? A Bugatti or are we going American muscle, Viper, Ford GT, ZR1 or Dodge Challenger Hellcat?

Moonshine...
Greatly simplifying your statement, but if an App guy is someone we can underpay because of their love of Boone and have them stick around another year or two longer then that’s kinda sad.
I know, we all want to stave off the G5 reality that our best coaches get hired away by crappy P5s with deeper pockets.

Re: ODU AD wants to blow up CUSA
What I meant by comparatively speaking is that as a program and as a fan, we have gotten more bang (W’s) for our buck than just about any other program in the country. App has been in the top half (and higher) of FBS in performance over the years and no where close in salary.
Without getting into economics and market value, underpaid is subjective. I for one, do not feel sad for any coach getting paid 6+ figures to do what they love, especially at a place they hold special. The reality is App can only afford what the budget allows. I’d be more sad if our program was paying a coach millions to have a losing record but I guess feelings will be different for everyone.
Bottom line, and again I personally wasn’t insistent on landing an App guy, is the program needed stability heading into the ‘21 season. Friends of mine and other fans I’ve spoken with felt an App guy would bring the stability moving into the next era of App football.
Obviously none of us know whether Clark and Co. will succeed or if he’d even stay if another program quadruples his pay. Right or wrong, the train of thought is App will have a higher likelihood of retaining a successful App guy as opposed to a non-App.

We are definitely one of the top 5-10 programs in terms of bang for your buck. Look at places like North Carolina, South Carolina, NC State, etc who pay big money and are rarely a top 30 program.moonshine wrote: ↑Thu May 14, 2020 10:04 amWhat I meant by comparatively speaking is that as a program and as a fan, we have gotten more bang (W’s) for our buck than just about any other program in the country. As for the App guy thing you are generalizing because I know for a fact we have some App grads who are not going to give us a hometown discount. They would jump just as fast as Drink did and feel like they could always come back later. I don't see Shawn Clark like that and believe your thought process is more true with him than many but we have a lot of App grads who I think would leave us as fast as a UNC, SC, NC State, Wake Forest, Tennessee, etc. for the money.
I can't blame them when they have a family. If you are single and no kids then you can do stuff like that. When your wife sees you could go from 650k to 2.5M or more she is thinking about college for the kids, retirement, etc. I completely understand it. With that said, we could get Nick Saban to come if we were to pay 10M or more a year and cover his buyout. Most coaches are about the money at the end of the day and will leave somewhere they are truly happy to go get the money. If a booster gave us 15M+ per year to increase our coaching staff salaries then you would be surprised at the names (HC, coordinators, and assistants) who would be willing to come to Boone.
