This virus is little to no threat to guys our players age.
I wish people would stop using this as justification to play football.

We don't know for sure how this virus affects young people, but what's true is that the number of cases in young people are growing.

They didn’t suspend practice because no one is positive..... unfortunately, it will only get worse.

What truly matters more to App, the players well being, or money. If they decide the latter then I don't ever want to hear them claim a thing about how much they care for students and athletes.
Please get off your high horse. You think we are raking in cash with our Sunbelt TV deal and our road trip to Marshall? We are playing because our players, coaches, and university love this game. This virus is little to no threat to guys our players age.
That is your opinion. There is no scientific facts to back that up at this point. There are still too many things to learn about this virus.

I know I ruffled some feathers with my last post criticizing the schedule but that was truly an entertaining evening haha. The post was fed by an extreme amount of frustration after sitting in a virtual conference for 2 days and then seeing What I still think is an underwhelming Replacement opponent on what was supposed to be an epic season.

But in all reality I’ve been on the fence about playing for some time. I want nothing more than to watch the black and gold play this fall and these guys to succeed/ get the recognition they deserve. After seeing the numbers popping up at the universities actually reporting numbers across the county, this Isn’t looking good. I have been hopeful with the state positive tests on a downward trajectory that this was possible but it seems schools will be the cause of a resurgence. I think the human cost of shutting down in person universities for the fall will be high but morally it’s probably the best decision.

On a similar note, I don’t see how the acc will be able to continue with 2 of its universities going to online classes. At this point I’m all in on on knocking Covid out by Christmas and watching spring conference play football.

I was 21 when I was in Boone and understand why the guys want to play. My concern was and still is the long term affects on our Hennigans and Thomas's. These kids have potential way beyond my entertainment on Sat. afternoons. On this team there are possible Rhodes Scholars, perhaps chemists and Drs., attorneys, ministers, business people whose contributions to the world as a whole is of significant importance. Not just at App but Georgia Southern, ULL, Charlotte, Carolina Blue and Carolina Crimson, ECU etc. I'd much rather lessen the chance that a gifted young person who earned his college degree in PreMed playing football, or hers playing field hockey suffer a devastating illness, keeping them from making his or her difference in the world.

I read the above Watauga Dem article. Since June, 30 THIRTY athletes and 4 staff hAve tested positive. I worry about the health of these young men a lot.
I do NOT, statistically speaking, nothing to worry about that has been proven at this time.

Think I like it up here the way they are doing it at indiana. Just dropped my daughter off for freshman year and moved in dorm. every kid gets a test and waits for 30 mins for resultes. clear, go to your dorm and move in, positive-quarantine. They will not diviluge the numbers as the positives do not matter. its how many that eventually test negative that is the focus. Its the best system. This is where the UNC system missed the boat

Do you not understand, we do not understand the long tern effects of this virus? Statistically speaking when 1 player dies will that be enough?

The people that matter most in this discussion, are the players. Right now, the players want to play. We should be supportive in an effort to help not hinder their efforts. Find a way, let them play.

If that’s your stance then there needs to be no football or college or high school anywhere! Period! You should stop posting endless political posts and make this your focus. You are correct, we don’t know. But do we shut down the entire world until 25 years has elapsed to prove or disprove your theory? I’m pro mask etc, but If it’s going to be this harmful to 18-22 year olds then our society as we know it is screwed. I take the virus very seriously but this is really doomsday hedging of bets.

You are right. So what’s the solution? Continued indefinite isolation until a vaccine? I’m not a virus conspiracy theorist either, an honest question

How about we put all the money we would have spent on isolating athletes and put it towards making the campus as safe as money can buy so that all the students can get the best education possible and hopefully keep the campus open. Or we could sit around crying because people aren't getting to play a GAME.......

Seriously, why can't people get this worked up and passionate about other projects on campus or even more important issues than playing a GAME.

Oh yea, that's right, people make billions off this game and the non-players want to be entertained, that is all that matters.

If it isn't about making the campuses as safe as possible because college sports are actually pro sports where players aren't allowed to make money then perhaps its time that "college" sports become their own entities and just represent a school instead of being part of it.

I don’t disagree. But you know the nature of sports, they generate a lot of publicity and money. Universities these days need that money. But you aren’t wrong, I just muse what the solution is.

That GAME is a big part of what pays for all those projects you're crying about. That GAME is what brings alumni back to the University and its the biggest reason I donate to my beloved alma mater.

The reason people don't get this passionate about other projects on campus (whether you like it or not) is simple, they're not football, they don't generate national buzz around our school and frankly, they're probably not as fun to watch. I'm sorry if that hurts your feelings but we're all thinking it. Football and players matter (that doesn't mean all students don't matter).

With all the crap going on in our daily lives, I do value our entertainment and if we can all have some entertainment that allows us to proud of where we come from, its win-win in my opinion.

If you hate football so much, why are you here? The air must be thin way up on that horse of yours...

Without turning this into a political argument that will get sent to the open thread... we'd be in a much better place had we as a nation taken this virus more serious earlier in the year. People insisted on not believing it was real, refuse to wear masks, refuse to socially distance, etc. There were people who went to their respective state capitals with AR-15s claiming having to wear a mask and stores being closed was taking their rights away. My sister and her family live in the Philippines, where if you don't abide by the COVID rules (wearing a mask, abiding by curfew), you're thrown in prison, or in a few cases killed. Her husband works for Cargill which placed them over there...she has now bought a townhouse in the USA and plans to bring the kids back stateside. My point is, people who want to be defiant have no idea. I'm not suggesting our country should have completely shut down for two months, but people should have been more abiding by the rules and suggested precautions months ago.

All it would take is for one player on the team to die, and who will have to take the blame? The fans and players that wanted to continue or the universities who did nothing? Do what just write it off as a cost to giving his all for Appalachian State? I'd assume regardless of your position on this issue you understand how liability works.

Hopefully people will take COVID-19 as a lesson. In many Asian countries even before Covid people wore masks even when they had non life threatening illnesses. Time to have respect for others and not just be selfish because the mask feels uncomfortable.

Lastly, MLS, NBA, NHL all created bubbles which have proven to be effective. That's not a realistic possibility for college football.

Can we all be honest here for a minute please?
90% of the players have ZERO chance to play football on Sundays. Yes App has started to produce more NFL players...but cmon lets be realistic. This is not a SEC school where you play football because it will become your occupation after you leave.
After 90% of these kids graduate they will never play another down of organized football, let alone make it to the NFL.
So that being said....what is more important for them long term? Playing or staying healthy and getting an education for when they are done at App?

BTW...its about to be done up here on the mountain anyway. I know there is always someone who says "i have inside info blah blah blah" so take it all with a grain of salt...BUT obviously people who are on the board work at app and live in boone and know plenty of people who also work there.

App has 46 beds free for covid cases......The hotel they are putting them all up at is near capacity. Once they run out of places to put them then its done. Campus will be closed and on line classes will be 100%. 46 spots left. Keep up with the public dashboard app publishes here and watch the numbers go up

Vaccine or no vaccine, what if this is just the way it's going to be , we live with COVID from now on , does college football or even college athletics as a whole survive?

Wow, you completely missed what I was saying. I love football. I've been a passionate fan of sports since I first learned about sports as a kid. If you were a long time poster here you would have seen me mention such things before.

I am well aware of what the game of football brings. That is not that hard to figure out. I also wasn't crying about it but thanks for the negative comment. If people only donate to our almamater because of football and not because they love the school that helped them get their opportunities in life then perhaps their priorities are in the wrong place. When I give to our school I do so because I loved going to Appalachian State. The football games have always been great but that is not even in my top 10 reasons for loving that school. My feelings aren't hurt, but again, thank you for talking down to me. That truly shows a lot about who you really are. Thank you for admitting that you just want the entertainment. My point is proven on there that people just want to be entertained more than they care about the athletes whether they be college or pro. Is there anything else you would like to assume about me, my beliefs, others beliefs, the origins of the universe?
