Athletes have been boycotting WCU football for about 35 years or so

I read about this yesterday and it seemed to say Speir was supporting the boycott.

Re: Apparent racial slurs at WCU lead to football boycott
When there are incidents that occur (assuming for moment that all this is true) the action by the players should be smart and make a point without shooting themselves in the foot or harming the wrong group. For example, some folks in their same school do something stupid, ok, then what is their reaction? We don't practice, workout, play football etc. which primarily serves the player's needs probably more than the ones that posted the video. You get my point. Do something that actually drives positive change related to the folks that have the problem, not create a self inflicted wound. I would suggest the whole football team ask those people to a forum to discuss how this created a big mess and their actions have consequences more than they may realize. Step up and be men and conduct themselves like professionals, not throw a fit and say, I don't want to play. Just seems like they are going about this the wrong way.

Athletes have leverage and they know it. For the most part it does push administrations to take action that historically would have been ignored.

I am sure WCU football is swimming in cash, especially with two games on their calendar this fall. It drives their whole university P/L.

Re: Apparent racial slurs at WCU lead to football boycott
I agree you are correct in general, however, all athletes do not have leverage or the same leverage as others. The mistake being made by some is their overreach in some situations. I would pose the question, for a WCU football program that has literally been on the brink of collapse for many years, how does a football team's boycott of their program help their agenda? If they truly want to change their school in a positive way do it in a smart way. That was my point.

Really cool to see such a large rebuke of racism by their students and administrators.
