Re: Marshall Coach press conf
There was that one damn reporter that kept saying Appy State...pretty classless on his part. The Doc seems to have a healthy respect and it seems like he fully understands the task he's facing.

Re: Marshall Coach press conf
Why do people in the 40-50 age demo say "Appy"? I hear that quite a bit and I don't live in NC anymore. I hear it from Tenn fans, WVU, Marshall (my dad played a sport there there), etc. Did we push that branding back in 70's or 80's?

Well, back in my day (early 70s) at App, people often referred to it as Happy Appy. Heck my screen name comes close. Most of the folks my age (non-App folks) often say Appy State and they aren't being disrespectful. Frankly, it doesn't bother me. Sometimes, I think, we can be a bit too sensitive about such.

I'm 47 and will never say it . . .NashvilleNeer wrote: ↑Tue Sep 15, 2020 3:54 pmwhy do people in the 40-50 age demo say "Appy"? I hear that quite a bit and i don't live in NC anymore. With that said, I don't lose sleep over it.

They say Appy because Appalachian has too many syllables for them to pronounce

But it is derogatory and that's why people don't like it. A "Happy Appy" was a stoned app student. It was used to talk down to us as a "little brother" institution that was just a place for kids who liked to get high. Ive never heard anyone use it in a context where they were trying to refer to us fondly. Its always used when someone is scoffing at us and trying to place us beneath their school.hapapp wrote: ↑Tue Sep 15, 2020 3:59 pmWell, back in my day (early 70s) at App, people often referred to it as Happy Appy. I don't lose sleep over much, sleep quite well actually, but I've just always cringed when I heard others say it. I'm 30 and never really hear someone around my age say it, but it's always in that older demo. I've heard people say it in a non-demeaning way, but it still irks me regardless. Just like the kids 5-6 years younger than me that say "Roll Neers" like we're Alabama or something, I always shake my head. That being said, I always wondered if we pushed that or was it our rivals and other in-state fans that got that popular. Seems like everyone else, but us, so it drives me nuts.

I'm totally good with "Pappy State!" LOL...but not "Appy State" and it's literally in the game notes given to the press to not refer to the school that way, so his using it is an obvious attempt to be disrespectful. I don't get worked up about it but I do cringe when I hear it.NattyBumppo'sRevenge wrote: ↑Tue Sep 15, 2020 5:10 pmAfter we beat dat ass, they can call us their pappy.

Waaay too sensitive. “Appy” isn’t nearly as cringe as the people that complain about being called it.hapapp wrote: ↑Tue Sep 15, 2020 3:59 pmWell, back in my day (early 70s) at App, people often referred to it as Happy Appy. Re: Marshall Coach press conf
I've never had anyone use it as a derogatory reference when talking to me. They have no idea that some folks are offended. I also don't live in NC. Sorry but I'm not bothered by it and never correct them. I don't have an inferiority complex about where I went to school.MtnMan09 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 15, 2020 4:26 pmBut it is derogatory and that's why people don't like it. I heard Happy Appy a lot during my time in the late 90s but don’t use it.

I have a theory that many who innocently settle on calling us Appy State are too nervous to say Appalachian because they are not sure which way to pronounce it. We still have to many people in high places, yes I’m talking to you tv announcers, that want to say Appalyshun.

Once we become the preeminent team in NC perhaps we can just be called State. The team typically called that doesn’t deserve it.

Doesn't bother me at all. They don't know if it referred to a stoned student in the early 70s. It's not like App is unique in having stoned students in the early 70s.
I think you're not seeing it right. We are one of the more popular schools in the football world because of our success, and people love an underdog that beats Michigan and they respect 3 national championships (was going to shorten that to "natty's" but didn't want to offend anyone) and then winning every bowl game in every season we've been eligible to play one.
Ohio State fans bought our shirts and hats. Penn State fans gave our team a standing ovation. People really like us, and Happy Appy or just Appy is not meant to be demeaning in anyway, imho. Just the opposite...they like and respect Appalachian St. Some Marshall beat reporter may remember the rivalry, but I doubt if he does he was saying that to be derogatory.
It's a good thing, friend.

Re: Marshall Coach press conf
Probably because pronouncing "Appalachian" is too hard for them...and probably the ultimate reason why we have been regarded as "App State" on a national level since we moved up.NashvilleNeer wrote: ↑Tue Sep 15, 2020 3:54 pmWhy do people in the 40-50 age demo say "Appy"?
