I was a communications IT in the Navy. It was just a fun saying we had, you were either a freq(comms) or a geek(network).

I wonder which came first, the Navy version of freq and geeks or Freaks and Geeks the TV show from 1999.

The current Navy Rate IT came to exist in 1997. Prior to that there was RM(Radiomen) and DP(Data Processing Technician). So at that point the Freqs(RM's) and Geeks(DP's) were one in the same. But the phrase probably came from the show.

The American Radio Association is now an affiliate of the ILWU but until the merger around 2008 they were the smallest union in the AFL-CIO by a good margin. The ARA seems to represent both RM and DP types at this point.

The Horseshoer's Union was another very small union but they changed their name and moved beyond horseshoeing a few years ago.
