Re: Peterson to Illinois?
I would prefer an "up and coming" OC that preferably has App ties. In the "up and" coming part, creative on offense passing game. Our running game is pretty good. Wish we would read option more or fake like we our and/or option to keep teams on their toes. The App ties may keep them here longer period of time.

Re: Peterson to Illinois?
I personally think coordinators are the least important spot to have an “App guy.” It’s good to have that in the HC (who leads the culture) and some position coaches (who do the recruiting and work most closely with the players).
For coordinators, I just want whoever can design the best game plan and call the best game.

I'm not challenging this position at all, but I wonder if that's because it's what Clark knows? Or because we've recruited a ton of talented players who fit our system? Or both I guess? Is it a "don't fix it if it's not broken" thing?
I remember TP stating at some point that he's not running his offense, he's running App State's offense.

Re: Peterson to Illinois?
A little of both. Eli didn’t run his offense either. He ran the offense that we had with Satt with a few wrinkles of his own. Only difference, is that he had healthy, experienced players all season.

You can run the “App State Offense” and still add wrinkles and innovate. I’m not offensive guru, but that seemed to be TP’s biggest problem. He seemed to have a limited set of plays and never deviated from them. I’ve said it on this board before, but the run game, despite the gaudy stats run up against inferior defenses, regressed. We saw very little QB run, read option, speed option, or sweeps like we saw in previous years. If we ran the ball, 8 times out of 10 it was a zone run left, right, or center. Every good team we played keyed up on that and stopped it.Rick83 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 29, 2020 9:33 amI'm not challenging this position at all, but I wonder if that's because it's what Clark knows? Re: Peterson to Illinois?
I like our philosophy. You have to be able to run the ball and play stout defense. However, I have complained this year about lack of inovation and in game adjustments. If we can hire someone that understands this offense, anticipates other teams adjustments, makes good adjustments, and can develop players it would be a home run.
With what's coming back, the right hire could really show out this year.

Re: Peterson to Illinois?
I am a little late to this news and thread but I could not be happier. Christmas just keeps coming this year, even if a few days late. I am sure TP is a good guy but he certainly did not show any competence in running an offense, play calling with rhythm, half time adjustments or optimizing the unique talents of his players. I have never seen a QB regress as much as Zac did this year and I lay a lot of that on the hands of his OC. I am so excited to see who we get next but I really hope Clark does a thorough search and does not just get a former App that we all liked. This hire may very well set the stage for Clark's tenure at App as head coach, he needs to get this one right. Man, am I a happy guy this morning.

Could we get a package deal with all three Lambs and save buy going bulk? Hire Bobby as the QB and then let Taylor be the OC. Taylor can learn from an experienced coach BUT have final say so no “Go for Two” shenanigans. The pièce de résistance would be to hire the wife/mother as the university photographer to document it all. Win-win-win-win. It could be the Costco of coaching hires-save by purchasing in bulk.

Flip the positions for the Lambs and I'm in! Seriously it may be time for Taylor to come home. He tutored Zac, and Bentley. He knows how to coach QBs.

Re: Peterson to Illinois?
Trey Elder has more experience on the college level. He's currently the OC/QB coach at North Greenville. I'm not suggesting him for OC but I'd give him a go with the QBs.
Check that, not currently on staff at NGU. Can't find where he is now

Re: Peterson to Illinois?
talk about vanilla offense (at least during his time at App). All I remember about BG was folks complaining about how our offense had regressed so much after Satterfield left as QB coach and BG took over.Appstate88 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 29, 2020 7:41 amWould BG leave Ga State OC position and return to App for a similar role/pay?

Re: Peterson to Illinois?
Had to admit i got a chuckle from the Illi board poster who said Peterson looked like a coach who molded to his roster rather than forced his roster to mold to him. IMO that is exactly what he did NOT do, kept trying things we were not capable of doing and not doing things that would be successful. again my opinion. The 3rd and 5+ stat is shocking, but not surprising based on Offensive productivity.AppStateNews wrote: ↑Tue Dec 29, 2020 3:27 amTP inherited the same exact guys Eli had... Some had injuries, sure. The different is when Eli's guys had injuries, the play calling changed. When TP's guys had injuries, nothing changed. When teams stacked the box, nothing changed. Calling the same kind of offense is one thing. Calling the right plays with your personnel in the offense is a completely different thing.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 28, 2020 11:15 pmRegardless of who the replacement will be, we are going to see the same offense next year, which is the same offense we saw under Eli. The only difference is that whoever it is, is going to inherent the same group of skill guys that Eli essentially had. TP did not. Some due to opt out and some to injury. But please, by all means, hang this year all on Tony.
I went back and looked. We were in 3rd and long (5 or more yards) 5 times as much as previous year. That is 100% on the OC not being able to adjust to his players. Now, is that 100% on TP? Maybe not considering Clark wanted to run our offense and TP had limited face to face time to learn/implement it.
I will say, I know with 100% certainty, our returning offensive players (especially Oline) are ECSTATIC TP is gone. That says something.

Re: Peterson to Illinois?
Hard to adjust when you are using 2nd and third string guys. Case in point. In the bowl game, we were doing a pretty good job of stuffing the NT rushing attack. Once Earle, (our 2nd string NT) left the game with an injury, things changed. NT ran on our 3rd and 4th string guys pretty handily. Mind you, they did a pretty decent job, but they showed that they weren’t quite to the same talent level of Earle. Not yet anyway. My point is this, no one cared since the offense was humming and we won handily. But I would say that some of you need to apply that same understanding of talent level disparity to the guys on offense. Wells, Horn, and Davis will be good. But they aren’t Hennigan, Virgil, and Sutton. Nor should they be expected to.

I love the idea of Taylor Lamb coming back here one day, but it's not the time. On the subject of ambitious former Apps, what about taking a flier on Tony Washington? Currently Coastal's WR coach.
