And the ability to adjust.
Hard to adjust when you are using 2nd and third string guys. Case in point. In the bowl game, we were doing a pretty good job of stuffing the NT rushing attack. Once Earle, (our 2nd string NT) left the game with an injury, things changed. NT ran on our 3rd and 4th string guys pretty handily. Mind you, they did a pretty decent job, but they showed that they weren’t quite to the same talent level of Earle. Not yet anyway. My point is this, no one cared since the offense was humming and we won handily. But I would say that some of you need to apply that same understanding of talent level disparity to the guys on offense. Wells, Horn, and Davis will be good. But they aren’t Hennigan, Virgil, and Sutton. Nor should they be expected to.
C’mon now, we didn’t have the injury bug quite like you would have everyone believe. Even if we did, that’s just a sorry excuse. It’s next man up. I know that recruiting rankings don’t mean much but there’s tons of talent on our depth chart and to say that our troubles were due to injuries is a total cop out.
If you expect a freshman to step in for one of the big three and it be a seamless transition then there is no point in discussing this point. You don’t see where you are wrong in your expectations.
That is 100% correct. Usually won't be a seamless transition. Which is why it's on the OC to use that players strengths (instead of the injured players strengths) in the play calling. Petersen didn't do that.
Is it possible that they don’t have a particular set of strengths developed at this level to exploit? Without an off season and lack of a full fall camp, could they be behind? As it was told to me, part of the so called “regression” by Zac was due to a lack of familiarity with the young guys. He didn’t trust them enough to throw the ball when he should and was holding it a bit longer than he should. They seemed to fair well against the lesser CBS in the league. But the more mature, physical guys could manipulate them.
As one poster pointed to a single drive in the Coastal game to prove me wrong that they couldn’t beat man coverage; I will use one play as an example of my point. In that same game, ZT’s second interception, (I think) occurred because the corner used his body to run our receiver out of bounds. Never touched him. That wouldn’t happen to Sutton, Henni, or Virgil now. Maybe when they were Freshmen.

.....that is not how that pick happened man. Zac threw a floater and the safety came up and jumped in front of the route Wells was running to the sideline. There’s really no need to BS to try and prove your point, it can just be dropped.

Wrong pick. Nice try. Just stop. I get it. You’re frustrated that we lost three games and didn’t make a NY6 Bowl. You feel let down and pissed because something that you can’t control disappointed you. You feel the need to point fingers. Good for you. As I said, you go right ahead and remain obtuse. You either can’t grasp, or refuse to acknowledge that there is a vast amount of cause and affect to why things happened the way they did. Keep pointing that arrow at the low hanging fruit my man.

Our losses were not 100% because of TP's play calling ability. Perhaps he wasn't the right fit at App State, but he was hired away from the program (perhaps it was mutual), not left on the curb. Just as Ted Roof was hired away from the program last year, after many felt that he was incapable during the first half of last season.
[/quote]
The Sunshine Squad likes to bring up things like this as an example of over reaction and to dismiss any discussion of critique. While the Roof thing was probably knee-jerk it is a really good example of a coach changing and molding around the talent on the roster. Peterson did not do that at all, was trying to do the same things in the last game as the first. Only the worst Run defense in all of CFB made him look good.

To hear you speak, one would think that a missing or injured player is not an every game occurrence. I guess we should throw our hands up at all the deficiencies, not to discuss them, and say oh well we didn't have a couple of our best players. I guess Miami really did win the game last night since their QB got hurt half way through.

I recall freshman stepping up each year. Noel this year was a great example.
Noel was a great surprise this year. Many on here will scoff, flame me , or block me for saying this, but he is a better back than Peoples and Harrington were at the beginning of this season. He has much more natural instincts and a better understanding of where the holes are. Peoples and Harrington don’t always hit the whole that the blocking opened up. That’s why it looked like we were running bad plays or were getting handled up front. Peoples got better as he got more reps. Noel had a grasp from the get go. Besides, that dude is like trying to catch a greased pig.

It’s surprising to me that there are 6 pages to this thread and the name Lance Ware hasn’t been mentioned once as a replacement for OC. He’s already on staff and as qualified as any other name I’ve heard mentioned so far.

I think he was mentioned somewhere, and it would make sense for him to move into an on-field role soon. But going straight from a non-coaching role to OC seems like a big jump. Granted I don’t really know anything about his HS coaching background other than that he won a lot.

Please don't read this as rude because that is not the intent. But can you explain how is he is more qualified than those mentioned? I've seen his name a bit lately in other threads and have wondered what his resume entails.

I think moving a coach that was successful at the 2A high school level, like Ware, is a big risk, especially for a relatively new head coach to make. If Clark was a more seasoned head coach with a longer winning tenure as a head coach, maybe he takes that risk. There is a big difference between coaching and calling plays at high school level to college....as well as an actual difference from the 2A level school to a 4A level school. Maybe Clark is a risk-taker. Definitely would be a cheap way out for the university.

Friendly conversation is never considered rude, in my book. If you look at his resume as a hs coach, and his development of future NFL players in a town approximately the same size as Boone, that speaks volumes to me at his qualifications and abilities. Plus, he is a true App guy. Just because he hasn’t been given the opportunity to be the guy, doesn’t mean that he can’t. Just my $.02, though.

Just going to play devil's advocate here. While his production at the HS level is beyond fantastic; what is his experience in calling strictly an offense, game planning? What style of offense does he run?

The thing is you said Ware is more qualified than anyone mentioned. I simply asked what those qualifications are. You told me to Google it, I did. It took me until the tenth article just to figure out what offense he ran at the HS level, and that article was from 2013. Hell I'd love to hire a guy that ends up being a so called "diamond in the rough", but I still don't see how he is more qualified than those mentioned, when those that have been mentioned at the very least have been position coaches at this level. If you could provide some more insight or information on why you feel so confident in in Ware I'd probably be on board with you. Until then it's a wait and see game.

I have no idea who the next OC will be, or even who’s being considered. But I’ll go out on a limb and say it won’t be Trey Elder, Taylor Lamb or Lance Ware.

I’m not going to get into semantics. But, I never said “more qualified”, as you stated. I said “as qualified “. I also finished both posts with “just my $.02”. Personally, I don’t care if you agree with me or are on board with my thoughts. I posted my opinion. I stand by my opinion. And don’t feel that I need to justify them to you. It’s going to be a wait and see situation regardless.

Now Bobby on the other hand would be intriguing.

Sunshine Squad, Are those the posters who have had Black & Gold Lasik eye surgery?

Yes , those who see the smallest of critique as treasonous, unacceptable criticism

For those of you dismissing injuries and opt outs as an excuse; I would like to point to Heisman hopeful Kyle Trask and the Gator offense last night. Life isn’t easy when your best players can’t go. But I’m sure it was just the play calling.
