I think we should play them in men's basketball once a year. One year in Asheville and the next in Winston-Salem.

I think we should play them once every 3-4 years in football and annually in every other sport.

Why not home and home? That is a question with no negativity or challenge of any kind intendedAppinVA wrote:I think we should play them in men's basketball once a year. One year in Asheville and the next in Winston-Salem.

None taken. I think it would be a good way for both schools to reach out to alumni in other parts of Western NC, and it could keep the game from becoming just another non-conference game on the schedule. If I'm a casual App fan (or a casual Can't fan), and I see that the schools think enough of this game to play it in a WNC city, I might be more inclined to go. If I like what I see, I may want to go see a game in Boone of Cullowhee later in the year. If this can't be forged, I wouldn't mind seeing something similar with Davidson played at Time Warner/Joel Coliseum every other year.

I kinda like this. Western's 18 wins vs App and they can place it on a mantle outside Whitmire Stadium.1ASU78 wrote:Take the jug and cut it in half. Mount the halves on a plaque with win loss totals and a commemorative write up of the series. Present the halves at the last game and call it done.

WCU is our peer in every other sport except football based on the NCAA Div. 1 criteria. Play them in anything else and it does not matter.
They are NOT our peer in football based on NCAA Div. 1 criteria. Do NOT play them.
Period.

2003 - 2013 = 100 wins/ 10 years = 10 wins a year ...pretty dang impressivekiddbrewer wrote:Somewhat off topic, but still pertains to the success ASU has had in football and the lack of success WCU has had.
Yesterday, I was bored at work. So I decided to pester a buddy of mine (bh2oson) at work by emailing him. I mentioned I was bored, so he challenged me to find out who we beat in football 100 wins ago. I had to go back to our first victory in 2003 vs Morehead.
He then wondered how far back you would have to go to find who WCU beat 100 wins ago. I had to go all the back to their first victory in 1986 vs Newberry.![]()
So, in my opinion, the rivalry is dead. It's been dead for years. No need to continue this for various reasons, some of which have been mentioned in this thread. We need to find a new rival and that new rival would probably have to come from the Sun Belt and by default, that would probably be Georgia Southern.
1986 -2013 = 100 wins/ 27 years = 3.7 wins a year...ouch

As far as I'm concerned, the sooner we put Western and their petty fans in our rear-view mirror, the better.
The heck with them.

Re: App vs. Western: Will it continue?
How is it hypocritical to honor a contract? Is the "opt-out" clause, as you called it, not part of the contract? I see no hypocrisy at all. What I do see is a smart addition to the contract in preparation for possible future moves.wb247 wrote:I also thought it was hypocritical to exercise the opt-out clause in the McNeese contract.

Re: App vs. Western: Will it continue?
Honestly, I've never understood the hostility that some folks (on both sides) have in this rivalry. Please don't try to correct me calling it a rivalry...it is one and it applies to more than just football.
I wouldn't mind seeing us play WCU at least occassionally, but it isn't likely to happen in the near future for financial reasons if nothing else. App needs home games, and will not be traveling to FCS opponents....period. WCU needs cash, and we don't have the money to pay like Bama, Georgia Tech, etc.
I think the removal of football might actually intensify the rivalry in other sports.

I think that The Battle For The Old Mountain Jug should continue. Move the Jug to Baseball.

Re: App vs. Western: Will it continue?
I've always said that if we play a FCS opponent every year I'd like for it to be WCU, if they can do better than the $1 million price tag. If they can't give it to another deserving NC team.8993 wrote:
It was also pointed out that Satterfield wishes to continue the rivalry with Western. So, my question to you is this: SHOULD we continue the "rivalry," or is it a lost cause?
I don't see a downside in playing WCU, I think the fans like it, the students like it and it's good for the rivalry in the other sports they they are currently eating our lunch in. Even for the people that hate WCU do they want our only games with them to be the ones that we end up losing? I would think that they would want us to play them in a sport that we should get a win!

Re: App vs. Western: Will it continue?
Other than maybe golf, I'm not aware of any sports that WCU really "eats our lunch in". I'd say the other series are fairly competitive. They've won some, we've won some, but no mass domination on either side (minus football, of course).Maddog1956 wrote:I've always said that if we play a FCS opponent every year I'd like for it to be WCU, if they can do better than the $1 million price tag. And as I've said before, I don't consider WCU a rival anymore, at all. Don't care about them, don't get worked up when they come to town. I do, however, enjoy razzing their 4 fans.
Give 'em hell!
